Summary: One of Tim Burton's Best Films, Visually Striking
Review: This is without a doubt one of Tim Burton's best work. I've always really loved Tim Burton's work since he made his first short film "Vincent". I own all of Tim Burton's movies, which proves how huge of a fan I am of his work. Now he does it again with "Sleepy Hollow". "Sleepy Hollow" is set in 1799. It is about Constable Ichabod Crane (played brilliantly by Johnny Depp) who is sent from New York to the town of Sleepy Hollow to investigate the murders they've been having there. When he hears about the story about the legend of The Headless Horseman, he doesn't believe the story. But when he gets deep in the investigation, he finds out that the legend of The Headless Horseman is real. This is based on the story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" By Washington Irving. The screenwriters did some updates on the classic horror tale by Kevin Yagher and Andrew Kevin Walker. Walker wrote the screenplay. I grew up reading and listening to the story, and I grew up watching the Disney cartoon, and I think the screenwriters did an excellant job updating it. Christina Ricci as Katrina Van Tassel is great in it, and she has never looked so beautiful. And the entire cast of the movie also did a fine job. And the musical score by Danny Elfman is really great to listen to. And the art direction won a well deserved Oscar. The most visually striking horror movie ever made. I have the DVD, and I'll tell you, I love it. It has a behind the scenes look, interviews with the cast and crew, and audio commentary by director Tim burton, which is interesting to listen to. If you want to own a visually striking horror movie, you'll want to get this one. I'am a fan of visually striking movies, and I know what are visually striking and what aren't. Tim Burton fans will really love this. A masterpiece. Get the DVD.

Summary: "TRUTH IS NOT ALWAYS APPEARANCE."
Review: I love horror movies. This one is so much more than that. "Sleepy Hollow" adds a delightful combination of suspense and even humor that makes it one to be enjoyed repeatedly.

Johnny Depp to me makes this movie; it wouldn't have been as good without him. I am definitely a fan now (I haven't seen him since Nightmare on Elm Street.) The way he over-exaggerates things and faints are hiliarious. Christina Ricci did very well; she was very mysterious and beautiful but she asked "do you think me wicked?" a few too many times. Christopher Walken as the Horseman is nothing short of extraordinary. This cast was brilliantly put together. Tim Burton and Francis Ford Coppola make quite a team. I see so many subtle hints to numerous other horror movies and I usually don't like that but it was very effectively done here.

The sound effects, set design, cinematography, music, and special effects combine to make this movie exceptional. I find it extremely interesting and fascinating; it is full of a broad range of emotions that you appreciate more with repeated viewings. I highly recommend this to horror/suspense/thriller fans! This is the first horror movie that I've seen (possibly ever) that is both scary and funny but most of all entertaining. The ending is fantastic. My bet is you will enjoy this movie. But if you get bothered by blood and gore, you might want to skip it. I take it with a grain of salt. Remember, it is only a movie.

Summary: Many reviewers miss many points in their reviews
Review: To the fan in South Carolina, please note that Sleepy Hollow DID will the cinematography Academy Award (oops!). Another viewer inexplicably says that one big element of the film's suspense is that Ichabod has to get the Headless Horseman before the Horseman gets him (Ichabod). ? Actually, one of the major Burton points of the film is that the Headless Horseman IS NOT TARGETING ICHABOD. Ichabod only puts himself in the way by choice, so to speak. Alas, there are so many ironical points and take-off points in the film that many other reviewers here have missed that I wonder what film they think they saw...There is Washington Irving and there is Disney's take on Irving and there is Burton's take on both, as he may remember them. Extending this recognition of memory's role in Burton's work, some viewers might find it useful to recall the point in the nineteenth century WHEN the character, Sherlock Holmes, was sleuthing. It is quite a bit after 1799, when Sleepy Hollow opens. So, those reviewers who say Ichabod is a inept Sherlock Holmes need first to understand the date of appearance of not only characters (in this case, Doyle's Holmes) but also scientific equipment and events (like the development of optics--Ben Franklin had glassses) before crafting a critique. More to the point would be recognizing that this is possibly Burton's and colleague's time-compressed ironic reaction to his (their) own idea of Sherlock Holmes as portrayed by (fill in the blank; start with "The Seven Percent Solution" and trudge back through all of Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce). And there may be other 'influences,' ranging from Charlie Chan's sons to a variety of incarnations of 'detectives' in famous movies (not least, Peter Sellers). But this is only a few possibilities, and frankly, I wouldn't begin to know who on the creative team dreamed up the apparently inept but really honorable and determined detective. Since we all should already know the contributions of Danny Elfman, Anton Furst and some others to Burton's films, it is unfair to give Burton both all credit and all blame for what takes place in his films. And we know there was lots of rewriting on this one...

Summary: Very good movie...
Review: I was a little disappointed when I rented this movie as I was expecting a full-on scary movie. Instead I got a twisted, but darkly amusing thriller/drama. Johnny Depp & Christina are great as Ichabod & Katrina, and the way the movie gained a new twist every 10 minutes was amazing. Only someone with as much talent as the wonderful Tim Burton could make such a strange yet cool movie.

Summary: Better than the cartoon!
Review: This is a must-see thriller that will have you biting your nails until your fingers fall off! In other words, this movie is not too shabby! This movie is one that is definately watchable more than once! If you're into mystery, horror, and just a teeny bit of gore (I'm lying), this movie is for you!

Summary: Don't lose your head!
Review: Ichabod Crane, a detective and one of New York's Finest, is sent to the tiny burgh of Sleepy Hollow to solve a series of grisly murders, all marked by a common thread - all the victims were missing their heads. As he fights demons of his past, and finds supernatural romance, our stalwart detective must unravel the mystery of The Headless Horseman and stop the reign of terror before Ichabod himself falls to the Horseman's blade. With an ensemble cast of Burton film veterans including Johnny Depp(Edward Scissorhands), Jeffrey Jones(Beetlejuice), an unbilled Christopher Walken(Batman Returns), Michael Gough(Batman), and great cameo appearances by Christopher Lee and Martin Landau, Sleepy Holly is a triumph for director Burton and fans of delightfully spooky horror films. A pleasant detour from Washington Irving's classic story, but one that will leave you jumping at shadows for days to come!

Summary: Hollow and Sleepy
Review: One has to wonder just how Tim Burton sees the world around him. If his movies are any indication, it is a dark and gloomy vision. His movies always reflect this and Sleepy Hollow is no exception. This film consists of a clumsy story thrown together from the remnants of a demolished Washington Irving classic. Assuming you can see though its typically Burton-esque fog of gloom, you will find some good actors struggling within. The script is sophomoric and the direction directionless. Johnny Depp's Ichabod Crane, despite the actor's considerable talent, is reduced to Burton's version of an inept Sherlock Holmes. He is even forced to don more Burton hardware, making the transition from "Edward Scissor Hands" to "Bobby Binocular Eyes". Out of the darkness rides "The Headless Horseman" (head played by Christoper Walken) upon a vaporous explanation that is a cross between Dracula and the Witches of Eastwick. It is always unfortunate when Hollywood distorts classic literature, but Tim Burton seems to have raised this vandalism to an art form. What will be next? Tim Burton's The Yearling? If so, they better get the fog machines started and dark fabric on order now. Oh, and don't for get the black deer.

Summary: Excellent acting, beautiful movie!
Review: I don't think this movie deserves 5 stars. I deserves 6!

Starting with the dark, yet beautifully filmed scenery, great stoy and wonderful acting, I don't think it could have been done any better.

Johnny Depp shows great talent, and it everything I invisioned Icahbod Crane should be. He speaks well, looks adorable =) and is able to inject a little humor in certain scenes. And who can beat all that fainting? Christina Ricci is almost unrecognizable. She is carries herself rather well, with a lovely voice to follow. Young Masbeth also does a great job, as does the rest of the cast.

This acting combined with great scenery and a great script makes a great movie. The action scenes are filled with tension and humor. Leave it to Tim Burton to create such a beautuful and humor-filled movie.

Summary: Creepy Story, Excellent CINEMATOGRAPHY, Great Characters
Review: This movie has some of the best Cinematography I've seen. I really was surprised that this didn't win the oscar for Best Cinematography. The story is creepy and weird, but good. The characters are good too. I recommend this to Tim Burton fans. Don't let the little ones see it though, the decapitations are grisly enough to scare them into thinking it's real. This is not for little kids. See It. That comment doesn't include youngsters of ages 11 and under.

Summary: Absorbing, full of action and suspence.
Review: At the end of the year 1799, in one post colonial Dutch settlement in the U.S., this story takes place. This version of Irvin's tale is far away from the original literature version. Other film versions are close to the author original tale, including the Disney animated cartoon version; a classic in its genre. This Tim Burton version is full of special effects. This overuse of these techniques makes us skeptic about the plot in the fight with the good and the evil. For example, the witch face remembers us "The Mask" with eyes and tong out in a flash moment. The coach ride battle with the headless horseman, Crane, Kathryn, and the little boy appeals to scenes of a coach ride battle in "Crouthroad Island" with Geena Davis. Other critics are in the character selections; first Depp do not has the physical characteristics for the Crane symbolic character. His is short height and over weight; a petite man. Crane original physical characteristic was: a tall, skinny man, close to a skeleton, parrots beaked nose, long legs and big hands. Author uses this morphology to typify an intellectual individual character, with polite manners, over selfish in its proposals and coward in essence. I think actors Nicolas Cage, or Tucci have the perfect physical attributes for this character. Other change introduced was the police-detective version of Crane instead of the rural teacher, it remembers me the Wild, Wild West TV series, and the inventions appeal to these TV episodes. Christina Ricci as Kathryn was convince and adds to the mystery mood this new film version. The rude peasant, Crane's rival for the love of Kathryn, a love triangle in the original story were deleted in this film, Burton lost this resource to add interest to the story. The photography is excellent. The gray and black hues in all of the scary scenes add to the mood of the terror appealing. For example, the interiors of the bungalows, the woods, the village, the shadows of the headless horseman, the moonlighting bloody frighten violent head cuttings. In the other side the colored scenes produce us a peace and relax sensation, the river along with the coach ride rail appeals to a precious renaissance paint, a Ruben's paint. To recapitulate, this version over emphasize in horror but is absorbing, full of action and suspense.
