Summary: too grose and creepy
Review: i'll never never ever ever see it again. ... I am in awe of his visual imagery (though Idon't particularly like his penchant for dark exposures and washed out colors) and I am perplexed at his use of this genius to create such bizarre and twisted films.

What is most disturbing about this film is that it tries to pass itself off as being based on Washington Irving's classic short story. This is not even loosely based on that masterpiece. It bears no more resemblance to the 'Legend of Sleepy Hollow' than Johnny Depp bears to Ichabod Crane. To put Irving's name and title on this goes beyond artistic license to shameless artistic forgery for its commercial value.

This is not to say that this isn't a good story. It is an excellent story. I just object to the artistic deception. What is sad is that we have a whole generation who will never read the story and believe they know it because they saw this film.

That being said, I thought this was a very good film that was a bit too ambitious in trying to cross genres. Burton attempts to create a comedy horror action adventure mystery romance. It has too many competing elements that distracted us from the main plot. The comedy element is the least effective. Burton's wry attempts at humor are sophomoric and puerile and detract from the better elements of the film, namely the horror/mystery aspect.

From the standpoint of the sets, props, costumes and visual effects, this film is masterful. The woods were spooky, the tree of death was fantastic and the windmill was a marvel. The creation of the headless effect was brilliant use of digital technology. The decapitations were also superbly grisly and realistic.

Johnny Depp did a fine job as the bumbling constable. He played it a bit too tongue in cheeky, but I'm certain that was more Burton's direction than Depp's interpretation. Christina Ricci was well cast as the coquettish Katrina. Somehow I don't think she has to stretch much to play the sassy and flirtatious type, but she played it to perfection.

I rated this film a 7/10. It is very entertaining and has moments of brilliance, but overall the whole is less than the sum of the parts. And Washington Irving it ain't.py Hollow," a film that will eventually become a classic in its genre. Please, if you havn't seen it, run and rent it and if you are lucky to see it if it comes to your town on the big screen, see it again and just marvel at this dark and fantastic tale told in wild, beautiful, and stunning images.

Summary: Atmospherically Pleasing
Review: I never had the opportunity to see Sleepy Hollow in theatres but heard great things from a number of my colleagues and friends. When the movie came out on DVD I took notice and rented it. Sufficit to say, I was not disappointed in any way. Burton's interpretation of the Headless Horseman myth was masterful and conveyed the perfect atmosphere for the story. Gory and gothic, there was always a sense of darkness and foreboding during the movie. For those of us who had only the merest passing affiliation with the original myth, much (if not all) of the story was surprising and suspenseful. Personally, though, I think the occasional use of comedy helped to keep the story from becoming too dark in tone, and I really enjoyed this movie. For anyone with an interest in suspense, drama, horror, or even fantasy (much of the movie had a fantasy feel to it), this movie is sure to delight.

Summary: SLEEPY IN THE TITLE OF THIS MOVIE IS APPROPRIATE
Review: Okay, this is my second attempt to comment on this movie. So here goes. This movie really captures the true talent of Johnny Depp. Johnny Who? You know, the guy who can't act and makes lousy movies. But the makers of this yawn-a-thon went one step further and put a munching in as leading lady. So what do you have? Dorky-looking guy and spooky-looking girly (whose idea was it to dye that mop?).

This movie was dull almost from the beginning. And as with many recent Hollywood movies, when you don't have a decent script, throw in special effects. But even decent special effects can't save this thing.

Now you might be thinking, "Hey, this is a movie for kids." Hmmm, I thought so too, but I played it for an 8-year-old, and a bit into the movie she's asking me if there's anything on TV.

But the scariest part in this movie isn't the Headless Horseman. It's wondering what kind of arrangement these two "actors" made with Satan in order to get paid the money they do to star in this highly flushable movie.

But there is something positive to say about this movie: I managed to get a good nap. It was like taking a sedative. I was in and out of this thing, so I couldn't really tell you how the entire story was going. Last thing I remember, Chris Walken was growing his head...then I was totally asleep.

So go ahead and buy this thing. Heck, give one to a friend. Anybody you know who's having trouble sleeping.

Summary: Burton's Nightmare
Review: Burton does an excellent job with this classic american horror tale... The visuals are stunning and do are excellent at conveying a terror by gaslight tale, and the DVD is great for delivering them in the clear and crisp manner they deserve. Depp does a great job as the stalwart believer in fact and evidence, and really makes a great Constable Crane.
All in all this movie is a great on, and seeing on DVD is a must. Any Burton fans wil agree this is a MUST HAVE, and most people can enjoy this twist on a classic american 'myth'.

Summary: A gothic thriller!
Review: We think that Tim Burton produced the legend of Sleepy Hollow in the best format and the best way anyone could. This is certainly not a real horror movie, but more a type of gothic thriller with humor to ease the tension. That doesn't mean that the movie is lacking shocking scenes, because there are several scenes not suitable for individuals with heart problems. Francis Ford Coppola is the executive producer and we know he did Dracula a few years ago. The effects are very good, except for Johnny Depp being squirted with blood a few too many times, but since it's Depp it's not that annoying. Sleepy Hollow communicates the mood of a gothic thriller through its cinematography and with the supporting soundtrack very well. It almost appears to be a black and white movie, but of course it isn't, as some of the important colors emphasize certain situations, and they did a very professional job at it and this comes across very good. The musical score is also just perfect for this movie and adds a lot to tell the story and to communicate the dark, terrifying mood. We enjoyed the movie and during this season it's certainly the right movie to watch.

Review: Geez, this movie BITES! I don't know why it gets good reviews, but don't believe them. I had to see it twice because I couldn't believe it was so bad! I'd tell you the ending, but I forgot. It wasn't even worth remembering. If you want a woodland horror, get BLAIR WITCH. Please don't let them make any more money on this ...

Summary: A great film and not hard to follow....just pay attention
Review: Another viewer, Graves, commented on how 'impossible to follow' the story. For a child, I grant you, that is the case. For an adult, though?? Come on. Its not hard to follow at all and it's a very refreshing take on the classic tale by Washington Irving. Now Tim Burton did take some liberties in the story, but so what? I have read the original tale and loved it. I likewise have enjoyed the various adaptations throughout the years, most notably the Disney animated version. Burton was smart, though. He made a totally adult version, blood and all. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The settings were perfect and Johnny Depp shocked me. I thought his performance was immaculate.

Summary: Wow...
Review: Terrible. Just terrible. Screenwriters must take some liberties in adaptations, but Irving's story was raped. Not only was the storyline impossible to follow, the special effects (which I assume were added in such abundance to try and blanket the terrible plot) did nothing to add to the film.

The excessive gore was simply distracting and gratuitous. It's as if the goal was to put as many disturbing scenes as possible into the hour-and-a-half flick. Burton is okay in that mild gothic humor he likes to do, but this quasi-serious attempt fell flat. If excessive gore and gray skies can keep your attention for any length of time, you may enjoy this. Otherwise, do not waste time or money on this film.

Really. It's that bad. Really.
