Rating: Summary: gets better every time i watch it. Review: I dont usually like movies that are set in the past, but that was not the case with sleepy hollow, its one of the best movies i have seen with good acting and an exitingly unpradictable story line. It brings up things that you never would think of. It has a great cast and suprisingly a little humor. I definatley recoment this for everyone.
Rating: Summary: One of the best movies I've seen all year Review: I skipped this movie while it was in theaters because the trailers made it look lame. However I rented it when it first came out and watched it twice in two days. After that I ran out and bought it and have watched it at least 5 times since. The only movie I own that I have watched more times then Sleepy Hollow is the Matrix.Dan
Rating: Summary: Somewhat scary and violent but not for everyone Review: I am not acquainted with the Washington Irving story, but I understand this film has been changed from the original. I can therefore only give my impressions of what I saw in this interesting adaptation directed by Tim Burton. Johnny Depp makes a good Icabod Crane, the constable who is assigned to investigate the mystery of the headless horseman in the year 1799. He's always been a little offbeat himself, and so this role suits him well. Chistina Ricci, cast as Katrina Anne Van Tassel, the daughter of the local landowner, surprised me. She has never looked more beautiful, slimmed down and dressed in the outfits of a rich young lady. However, her own offbeat personality which she exhibited so well in past films was gone. And she played the role as a hundred other actresses would have done it, with none of the special quality that makes her stand out with her own particular personality. Miranda Richardson as Lady Van Tassel was excellent, bringing just the right amount of sexiness and horror into her performance. She definitely outshone the younger actors. This is a good story and the script done well. It swept me along in the mystery and there were enough twists and turns of the plot to keep me interested. I loved all the chases and spooky sounds and startling details. The scenery was just right and cinematography excellent, often shot in shadow with filtered lenses. Yes. It was violent and somewhat scary. But as it was a legend and not supposed to be real, it was expected and absorbed into the story. I found it entertaining although its not for everyone and certainly not one I would rush out to try to see. But if you're in the right mood for this kind of a yarn, you might just enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: Almost had me 'decapitated'! LOL Review: WHAT AN EXCELLENT FILM!! I LOVE JOHNNY DEPP AND TIM BURTON. THEY MAKE A GREAT TEAM!! THEY'VE COLLABORATED ON 3 MOVIES SO FAR AND ALL OF THEM WITH GREAT RESULTS... DEPP PLAYS ICHABOD CRANE WITH APLOMB. HIS SLIGHTY BRITISH ACCENT IS CREATIVE AND I HAD TO LAUGH WHEN HE SAYS 'DECAPITATED'. THE SCENE WHERE HE EVENTUALLY BELIEVES THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN IS REAL IS A HOOT!! MY FAVOURITE, FAVOURITE PERSON IS OF COURSE THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN HIMSELF....WHAT A GREAT CHARACTER. PLAYED BY NON OTHER THAN DARTH MAUL HIMSELF RAY PARK. HE MADE SOMEONE WITH NO HEAD SUCH A GREAT LAUGH. HE HAS EXCELLENT SWORDSMANSHIP!! NOT ONE TO BE MESSED WITH. THE FILM HAS GREAT SPECIAL EFFECTS, GREAT ENSEMBLE ACTING, A GREAT SOUNDTRACK [GO BUY IT!!] ~ IT HAS GREAT EVERYTHING!! THOROUGHLY ENTERTAINING AND IT CAN BE WATCHED AGAIN AND AGAIN!! ENJOY!
Rating: Summary: Wicked and Fun Review: This movie is a ton of fun to watch! It can be gross (very gory) at times, but Johnny Depp does a fantastic job as Ichabod Crane--he is hilarious! And the costumes are worth it by themselves. It's a wonderful version (but then, I still haven't read the original story).
Rating: Summary: A lot of Tim Burton--not much of Washington Irving Review: I must say I watched this movie with very high expectations. If you like Tim Burton films (I do), then you will enjoy this film as it possesses all the dark fairy tale qualities he has made famous. At the same time, if you are devoted to Washington Irving's original story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (as I am), then you will be disappointed. Burton has taken the story of an elusive, mysterious, and terrifying country phantom and turned him into a terrifying but not very mysterious (at least not for very long) Jack the Ripper. In a rampage of murderous mayhem, the heads fall fast and furious--the gore is laid on a little more thickly than I had been led to believe it would, although, to Burton's credit, the gory scenes are presented with a surreal, almost amusing, quality. Still, very little is left to the imagination, and it has been my experience that the imagination is a much better spine-tingler than the special effects industry (see the success of Blair Witch Project). Nevertheless, the picture is very well made. Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, and the rest of the well-chosen cast turn in outstanding performances (although the character development lags behind the pace of the movie). The setting, the effects, and soundtrack are equally first class. Still, I would have liked to have seen a movie more in keeping with the spirit of Irving's original tale. Could his "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" have been turned into a full-length motion picture? Well, I think if anyone could have done it successfully, it would have been Tim Burton. But he didn't do it here.
Rating: Summary: A Creepy Confection to Savor Review: Tim Burton, the master of dark & moody films, has probably created his best movie to date in this loving tribute to the old Hammer horror films. While not true to the letter of Washington Irving's classic tale, SLEEPY HOLLOW is very true to the story's spirit. Looking at this film is like looking at a faded scenescape as Burton creates a world that truly dazzles. Johnny Depp makes a most unconventional hero as Ichabod Crane, but he more than provides the glue which binds this flick together. Christina Ricci makes a good impression as the china doll like love of Ichabod's eye. A lot of Burton's usual acting stalwarts are solid in small roles including Micheal Gough and Jeffrey Jones. There is also a wonderful cameo by horror great Christopher Lee as the magistrate who sends Ichabod on his mission. This film is spooky, creepy and very funny. Even the over-the-top violence tends to engender laughs as much as chills. A must see film not only for Halloween...but for anytime you want to enjoy spooky thrills. The DVD edition is also great for Tim Burton's amusing commentary and the extras included. Highly recommended!!
Rating: Summary: so cheesy how could you not love it ? Review: man i love this movie. the plot is great, the atmosphere is superb, and tim burton is a genius. you all know the basic premise: ichabod crane is sent to sleepy hollow to investigate mysterious decapitations and stumbles upon a headless black figure with a powerful steed and a sword with the taste for blood. but what many people dont know is that ray park (darth maul for episode 1, toad from x men) is the man inside the headless horseman. the sword scenes are beautifully choreographed and my favorite part is when casper van dien is dismembered. wow.
Rating: Summary: Among the few great Movies of 1998 - 99 Review: Absolutely brilliant! I know I wanted to see this movie as soon as I heard of it and I was not dissapointed. Along with the Blair With Project, this is definitely my favorite Nineties-Horror movie ( I don't care what Jennifer Hewitt did on any Summer since 1564! ). This one has it all : So much Gothic that it screams for a Cradle of Filth Soundtrack, a great Romance that makes Titanic look really pale ( it's awful anyway ), it has Johnny Depp ( a great actor indeed ), tons of gloomy and atmospheric Photography, it's more fun than watching Ricky Martin break both legs, and last but not least, it has a headless Horseman who isn't too happy about his headlessness. It looks like a revival of some Hammerfilm and if there was a better time and place for a Hammerfilm revival than this, I don't know! After all, Scream was just another Teen-movie, I mean I would date somebody I just met for Scream. For Sleepy Hollow I would date someone who I truely like. Because it has more style... Think what you will, I would recommend this movie to everyone and I'm gonna call on some headless Horsemen if it isn't under my Christmas Tree next time!
Rating: Summary: Don't Sleep through This Review: Although Burton's take on "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" could be described as a hollow attempt at Irving's short story, it does provide a more frightful and action-filled plot than the original work of fiction. The lighting is fanciful, changing as the film nears its conclusion. The acting may seem stilted at times, but it seems to inhance the flavor of the main character's radical crime solving methods.
