Summary: Not for the lame of mind
Review: If you must have every plot point expounded upon via dialogue to understand a movie, do not see this film. If you're a fan of subtlety and personal interpretation (irregard to what the director himself wants you to think) then this is a good movie to go have fun with. This move is not quite a cerebral picture as it is a good vacation for it. It allows itself a multitude of interpretations, any variation you might contrive could be true. It is a story without a definitive ending, (which is where the lame of mind get upset, and subsequently boo) rather it is left open for you to draw the conclusions you want. One avenue I trod, in considering what I had seen, was that of LSF being Depp. The idea behind this has its' seed in ethereal beings taking human forms, for the experience of it. In the end, he goes back home. It was nice to see Polanski rely upon subtle differences (eyes) rather than overt grotesqueness. It makes the people we've read about in those 2,000 yr old tomes seem more human, allowing certain degrees of identification. It's not a real mind blower, just a well shot, acted, enjoyable film. Go see it, have fun with it, and give your waking mind that vacation it so greatly deserves!

Summary: The first two hours are amazing
Review: This new Polanski movie is absolutely gorgeous and well worth seeing on the big screen. One should be aware, however, that the last 10-15 minutes undo what much of the movie has built up to. Don't go expecting everything to fall into place because you won't get it.

Johnny Depp is excellent as Mr. Corso, a proclaimed "mercenary" of the rare book world. His comic timing gives this movie an edge of irony that could have been obfuscated by a less talented actor.

The film is inquisitive and ethereal. The camerawork is extremely well-controlled and framed. This movie felt like reading one of Umberto Eco's novels - foreign travel, elements of the supernatural, and cabalistic groups abound and add interest to the developing story.

I won't spoil the end of the movie but I will say that I felt slighted. There is a sort of weird double climax in the final minutes of the film that doesn't leave the audience with anything to ponder other than "why?" There is no final statement or understanding which comes as a result of wither of the climaxes - which is why this falls short of a five-star rating in my book.

See it and enjoy it. I can't wait for the DVD. Hopefully Roman will give us a little insight into what he was trying to do.

Summary: Rare Polanski, No Strings Attached
Review: Excellent film, beutiful screen shots and convincing story line, a well rounded movie with a murky polanski twist. This movie contains an outstanding cast and Depp's role as the new scholarly detective hero is one of his best as an actor. -a few unexplaineds in the plot but on the whole, a very well rounded movie that will keep those with even the slightest interest in the black arts on the edge of their seat.

Summary: I thought this movie was made for me
Review: This movie was just fantastic. It's not quite a thriller but not quite a drama, neither is it a pure mystery film. It's in between all those genres. At some points this smart movie can be quite exciting and climactic. With a great cast, a powerful story and supernatural intrigue this is a must see that always leaves you guessing.

Summary: Negative Stars?
Review: This is the worst movie I have ever seen, and I'm not exaggerating. Absolutely terrible - and yet, not so bad it's good. So bad it's bad. Talent was wasted on this film like you wouldn't believe. For the love of God, stay away from this movie.

I cannot recall any other time when I saw a film in the theater that was unanimously booed at its conclusion. Unbelievable!

Summary: Depp's fantasticly dark interpretation
Review: This movie is surely one of the best , if not the best interpretation I saw Johnny Deep perform. His talent was so well used by Polanski to make his character a dark minded , no-conscience-at-all,mercenary kind of book detective with a dark aura around him.The actors were very well chosen ,BĂ©art fantastic as a dark angel ,etc. Had to see it twice in 24 hours.

Summary: impressive & dangerous
Review: this is a religious movie. and the religion is not christianity.

it does follow the archetype of religious movies in a twisted way: the typical battle between the good and the evil is replaced by the battle between the evil on earth and the same from a different source. no hope. impressive camera-work, hypnotic soundtrack. it is certainly one of the darkest movies i have seen.

Summary: YES, THE END IS A GYP. OTHERWISE A HAUNTING THRILLER!
Review: The absolutely creepy yet sublime direction of this Polanski endeavour makes it a worthwhile watch. Almost Kubrick-like, wide angle shots and lax-paced screenplay and all.

I was riveted. Riveted, that is, right until the somewhat confusing fire and cobblestone ending, which admittedly leaves you with very little to chew on and instead of appearing clever and ambiguous, as it perhaps wanted to, mostly comes off as complacent.

Yet, the point of a mystery noirish film is to keep you intrigued through out, and the movie manages to do that quite successfully. The sleuthing process is almost done in tandem with the audience, which is fun. Johnny Depp is immaculate in his potrayal of a detached book detective and all others contribute richly. The music is tacky in bits, but not too distracting.

Recommended rental for haunting cinematography of Portugal and France, and a fabulously captivating atmosphere in general.
