Summary: An Evening With Sherlock Holmes
Review: I must be honest. I read some of the other reviews of this DVD package but despite the negative comments, and being a huge Holmes fan, I ordered it anyway. Boy am I glad I did. I'm not sure what the other reviewers were expecting but this 4 disc package has just become my favorite "box set." The quality of the four films is a bit lacking but you must take into account all of the extras included in this set.... you get the four Holmes classics, still photos, trailers, an on screen interview with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and FIFTEEN hours of classic Holmes radio broadcasts! I would have paid the money just for the raido shows. Listen, here's the bottom line. If you're expecting these films to look and sound perfect, forget about it. But if you're looking for a really great box set value and you're a Holmes fan, then don't wait another minute. AN EVENING WITH SHERLOCK HOLMES is for you.

Review: I passed on purchasing VHS versions of the Sherlock Holmes movies, looking to the promise of DVD. Well, I should have purchased VHS. The picture quality is beneath the quality of the movies (very faded and washed out, sound is no better) and many scenes have been cut completely out, making it difficult to follow the plots. Save your money, wait for someone else to release DVD's worthly of this great series of movies.

Review: I wish I would have heeded the reviews before buying this boxed set. The picture quality is awful and I could not make out the dialogue. This is like buying a book from Amazon and not being able to read it! There should be a recall on this product and refunds issued to the purchasers. At the least, this product should be pulled off the Amazon site in the interest of maintaining good customer relations. This product is a blight on the whole DVD industry.

Review: I'm really glad that I ignored all the negative reviews of this product and bought it anyway. I could not be happier with the purchase. First of all, the set is worth buying for the extras alone. Each disc contains 3 1/2 to 4 hours of radio shows with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce reading the parts of Holmes and Watson. The shows are awesome and the sound quality is excellent. It was worth the money just for the radio shows. This set also contains the interview with Arthur Conan Doyle in which he discusses, among other things, why he created Sherlock Holmes. Each disc also contains a movie trailer and a photo gallery. And secondly, the overall quality of the films is not that bad. It's certainly not great. Don't get me wrong. But I did not find it to be as bad as some of the other reviews say. The films are quite watchable. This set is definitely worth buying, assuming that you want the radio shows and the interview with Conan Doyle. However, if you are looking for great quality movies and aren't very interested in the extras, then don't buy this.

Review: I'm surprised a higher rating hasn't been assigned to this boxed set of 4 Rathbone adventures.
If you're interested in old time Radio Drama, there are 15 hours of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" with classics like "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" along with "The Notorious Canary Trainer" spread throughout the DVDs.
I had some time ago seen an old movie of Sir Arthur on TV, and lo - here it is on the DVD! I'm really quite delighted by the whole set; very satisfying for my Sherlock Holmes Collection

Summary: "Terror by Night" Cut to Shreds
Review: I've watched only "Terror by Night" of this set so far, and an unfortunate first choice it was. A massive cut near the beginning deprives viewers of a key plot mis-direction and great bumbling scenes by Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. The box copy indicates that these DVD versions were restored from rare and badly damaged prints. Rubbish! The San Jose, CA PBS station (KTEH) aired the full-length version recently--and in quality not much worse than the DVD. I'd call this set "An Aggravating Evening with Sherlock Holmes."

Summary: I Love Sherlock Holmes & Have for Years
Review: Many Enjoyable Hours have been spent watching Sherlock Holmes & I Am Looking Forward to More Episodes being offered. If they come in the boxed sets with Radio Shows included as this one did I will Purchase in a New York Second. One Hopes that since the Quality of the episodes is Not Great- that they offer the "colorized episodes". Also Offer a suggestion to others who watch- Play the DVD thru your sound system, but turn off the screen. It's distracting when you are listning to old time radio show & photo's from old Movies not related at all are displayed. I would have Hoped that the stills displayed fireplaces, old radios, Photo's of stars doing show, or just a blank screen. Is exceptional when effect is dark room, TV Picture off. etc. Brings back the good old days. Still Good- Could be Great.

Summary: The wait wasn't worth it.
Review: Sadly, this box set of four individually packaged DVDs is a disappointment. The picture quality is startlingly poor (WOMAN IN GREEN seems to be the best while DRESSED TO KILL is the worst). All the titles are blurry and too high-contrast, not to mention scratchy (of course) and the sound is fairly poor.The packaging is a mixed bag - the covers all reproduce original poster art, which I think is terrific, but there are no inserts, and (despite how minor this is) the spines are dead boring. The movies themselves are almost immaterial...they're good, classic sleuthing mysteries with the enjoyable and unforgettable team of Rathbone and Bruce and a host of supporting characters. Each disc also includes a selection of 7 or 8 original Rathbone/Bruce radio broadcasts, which is a terrific extra (with very good sound) that makes up a bit for the poor quality of the films. The back cover of the cardboard slipcase reads "The enclosed four DVD titles were miraculously restored from the only known surviving prints, which were extremely damaged." Call me a doubting Thomas, but I just can't believe we couldn't have had something better than this for these film favorites.
