Rating: Summary: Gripping modern "film noir" thriller definitely worth seeing Review: "Red Rock West" is a superb and amazingly well written thriller with excellent acting and surprises galore. The plot twists and turns and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout.Nicolas Cage plays Michael Williams who arrives in Red Rock broke and out of work when he is mistaken for a contract killer. Bar owner Wayne Brown (J. T. Walsh) offers him $10,000 to murder his wife. Williams is shocked but pretends to go along with the plan. He decides to warn Brown's wife Suzanne (Lara Flynn Boyle) of her husband's intentions but this is where things start to go drastically wrong. The real killer, Lyle (played by Dennis Hopper) then arrives in town which places Williams in many dangerous situations so you will just have to see the film to find out what happens to him next!! Some favourite lines from the film: Nicolas Cage (to Lara Flynn Boyle): "I hate to see an innocent woman get hurt but it's an awful lot of money". Boyle (to Cage): "O.K. How are you going to explain impersonating a hired killer and taking $10,000 from my husband?". "Red Rock West" is a film that did not receive much publicity on its release but is now gaining a cult following. This is definitely a film worth looking out for with a marvellous storyline and many unexpected surprises along the way. J.T. Walsh gave a riveting performance in the film - he was a fine actor and it is tragic that we lost him to a fatal heart attack in 1998. He had become one of my favourite actors in films such as "Breakdown", "The Narrow Margin", "A Few Good Men", "The Client" and many others. He usually played character parts or supporting roles but was always watchable. A sad loss. "Red Rock West" was co-written and directed by John Dahl - a name I was not familiar with - but I did enjoy another film of his recently called "The Last Seduction". I will watch out for more of his films in the future. "Red Rock" is certainly a surprise hit - one of the best thrillers of the 90's. Do yourself a favour and see it! Clive Roberts.

Rating: Summary: A Nice Dose of Murderous Double Crossing Review: A basically decent drifter (Nicolas Cage) lands in the tiny town of Red Rock, Wyoming, looking for work. When he stops in the bar, the bar owner (J. T. Walsh) asks why he took so long and asks him to step in the back office so they can discuss the job. Cage plays along, then discovers the work is to kill the bar owner's wife. He takes the money, drives out to the ranch to warn the wife (Laura Flynn Boyle), and starts to leave town. Problems arise and he returns to town in time to witness the real hit man (Dennis Hopper) arrive. Things go downhill for the Cage character after that. This is an excellent, convoluted, well-acted and offbeat mystery. Funny, too. Cage never knows what's happening, but everybody else assumes he does. Dennis Hopper again plays a charming semi-psycho but he hadn't patented the style yet so it seems fresh. J. T. Walsh was a great character actor who died young. He's outstanding as the bar owner...who also happens to be the sheriff. He has one or two other secrets as well. And if Boyle doesn't rev your engine, you may need a tune up. She's more ruthless than the lot of them. The DVD transfer is clean and clear.
Rating: Summary: Don't miss this one too..... Review: I hadn't heard much about this film, nothing in fact, when I stumbled across it in the video store. I was pleased to discover a taut little noir picture about a down-and-out ex-marine (Nicolas Cage) looking for employment in the wrong town. What ensues is a winding story involving murder for hire and a femme fatale. Cage and Boyle put in solid performances and Hopper is vaguely creepy as usual. I liked the pacing of this movie; it kept up the tension without overdoing it. With crazy twists and some laughs it kept me interested the whole time despite being occasionally formulaic. Too bad this movie was overlooked by the public, I advise you not to make the same mistake.
Rating: Summary: nicolas cage Review: I like this movie because Nicolas cages is a hansome boy.. so even he is a great actor.
Rating: Summary: Even Nicolas Cage can't make this movie good! Review: I purchased the movie thinking that it would be great. Dennis Hopper and Nicolas Cage in the same film. I was truly disappointed. The plot is so unbelievable. It was a waste of my time and my money.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant Film-noir Review: I was introduced to this film by my most esteemed English professor. I rented it reluctantly, but with the knowledge that all he had recommended before proved excellent. This is no exception and I have since added it to my collection. I recommend that you do the same if you are interested in this type of film (Film-noir). It is as good as "True Romance" or "The Killing."
Rating: Summary: Just GO, man! Review: I've watched this marvelous noir movie, oh, maybe 4 times, and my response is always the same. Nicholas Cage has yet another opportunity to just get the hell our of Red Rock, and you can see the conflict and indecision and inevitability play across his face, and you just want to shout at him, 'GO, man, just GO!' But of course, if he did, there wouldn't be a movie, and it's such a good one that it would really be a shame to have it not exist. Cage plays a down and out ex-Marine who literally stumbles into Red Rock West, Wyoming. For his sake, you wish it could have been maybe Red Rock East, or Laramie, or Cheyenne - anyplace other than Red Rock West...but no. It's in Red Rock West that he finds himself caught in a web of betrayal that begins with a case of mistaken identity and goes from silly to confusing to scary to terrifying in the space of about 20 minutes. There's a femme fatale, a psychopath (spectacularly played by Dennis Hooper), money, power, treachery, and ruthlessness at play here. Cage is trapped but good, and no matter how hard he tried, he just can't seem to leave town. Bravo, bravo.
Rating: Summary: cage and hopper...about time Review: If you're a Nicolas Cage fan, as I am,this is a typical violent action piece for you. Cage's character has a conscience and he has trouble doing his appointed job properly. Hopper is in his prime as ruthless killer, where Lara Flynn Boyle is in a different role for her, but holds her own in strong male cast.
The movie cruises along with the showdown being predictable but quite enjoyable. Not a favourite of mine, but good enough.
Rating: Summary: Great noir film Review: In the tradition of Double Indemnity and The Postman Always Rings Twice. Resembles similar films Blood Simple (also takes place in Texas, also stars Emmet Walsh), Body Heat, and U-Turn (Cage just can't seem to leave town). Tense, dark, and spare. One of Cage's best before he started doing the over-the-top Snake Eyes, 8MM, and that wacky airplane prison movie.
