Rating: Summary: A Great Ride Review: I owned a copy of this when it first came out on dvd. Quickly gave that one away in favor of this version and I AM SO GLAD I DID!! As dark and gritty as ever, Kevin Spacey makes your skin crawl like no one else can. He is the embodiement of evil. Gwenyth Paltrow has such a small role in the film, you really wonder if she should have gotten such a high billing.Normally don't care for Brad Pitt that much, because I find him to be too much of a pretty boy, but he is good as the somewhat cocky new guy learning the ropes from Morgan Freeman's character who wants to retire, but can't until the John Doe murders are solved. This is one dvd that anyone with a dvd player should own. The movie is great and it is loaded with great extras.
Rating: Summary: Is it Fight Club? Review: Is Se7en a great movie? Yes! Is the Se7en DVD better than Fincher's other great DVD Fight Club? No. Don't get me wrong, this is a must have piece of DVD collection material because it's Fincher and becuase it has so many goodies packed in. But to this day there hasn't been anything in comparison to Fight Club in terms of price range that just offers that much. Toy Story Toy Box is the only thing that I know of that can put a hurt to Fight Club, but it'll cost you. Se7en is totally worth it, do yourself a favor and click the "Buy Now" button. You won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: An Effective and Disturbing Film Review: Everyone has heard of the seven deadly sins, but most people can't name all of them. Most people forget a couple, but after seeing this movie I do not think I will ever forget any one of them. The movie is powerful and well-acted by Morgan Freeman, and (surprisingly) Brad Pitt. The premise alone is ingenious, maybe, even the best concept for a thriller in a long time. I have a feeling the screenwriter, Kevin Walker, will be a high commodity for a long time. What is the premise? Well, it's about an extreme righteous killer named Jon Doe (played by the ever talented Kevin Spacey) being tracked down by two detectives, the soon-to-be-retired Somersett (freeman), and the new kid, Sims (Pitt). Although we never see the deaths take place, we do see the aftermath which is very unsettling and let's your mind wander on how it all took place, the torture Jon Doe put them through. When Jon Doe is told that he is killing innocent people he responds, "innocent? Is that supposed to be funny?" then says why those people deserved there death sentence, each linked to one of the deadly sins, of course. Then when you think the movie is unsettling enough, the ending will push you over the edge. GRADE: A
Rating: Summary: Can't recover from Kevin Spacey Review: The movie is so E V I L and B R I L L I A N T. Both director David Fincher and author Richard Dyer are to be put in Jail..! They came up with the best homicidal movie ever to be made. So they are dangerous for the society! Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt did a great job... especailly the facial expressions of Brad Pitt, I cry everytime I see them. And as of Kevin Spacey, he was so convincing that it took me months to recover from hating him for being a PERFECT COLD BLOODED MURDERER. I wish the DVD menus were not so distorted and more eye friendly to be navigated easily. If you haven't seen this film, you are missing so much!
Rating: Summary: Dantesque Review: In this movie, Morgan Freeman plays a police officer (William Somerset) who is well-read (whoa!!). Let me repeat that: Morgan Freeman's character can tell the difference between the writings of Hesiod and the plays of Racine. That his character is erudite is reason enough to rent this movie, regardless of whether or not you like thriller-type flicks. Brad Pitt is excellent as Freeman's ignoramous partner, David Mills. The plot has the two of them attempting to apprehend a felon who is every bit as learned as detective Somerset. Due to this, the movie is able to do what few other movies have ever done; it delves into the morose Dantesque overtones of sin and punishment. For a brief introduction to the works of Dante, visit this website: http://users.erols.com/antos/dante/ Besides Dante Alighieri, the film also contains allusions to John Milton and Earnest Hemingway, among others. Besides the intellectual apparatus of the movie, it is also worth seeing plotwise as well. A great film, especially for lovers of literature.
Rating: Summary: Great movie, but the "bonuses" don't live up. Review: Seven is a great movie. If you're reading this, you probably like the movie, so there's no point talking about it. The added bonuses, however, fail to live up to expectations. The commentaries are inane at best. When talking about scenes that were cut down or cut out, the director's comments are "We decided to cut this scene. I like the lighting, though." Nothing about why they cut the scene, or why they decided to change it, or anything that might have been interesting. When talking about the opening credits, he says something like "We hand wrote the names. Neat." Not where the inspiration for the pictures came from, just that they made credits. The "additional endings" they promise are a test ending that is basically the same as the final ending, and a storyboard ending that wasn't filmed. Not what I hoped for. The pictures from John Doe film is really dumb, since most of the pictures are badly exposured and have been deteriorated to the point where there's no picture, just blobs. Dumb use of disc space and a waste of time to watch. I was expecting something more in the commentaries, like why they did what they did, not just that they did it. The movie gets 4 stars, the other stuff gets 2 for an average of 3 stars.
Rating: Summary: A masterpiece of genre filmmaking. Review: Sure, we have all seen serial killer movies, but rarely are they so masterfully done. David Fincher has constructed a multi-layered work of sublime precision. The photography of Darius Khondji (Pulp Fiction, The Ninth Gate) is as perfect as you can get. Morgan Freeman is his usual outstanding self but Brad Pitt gives a highly nuanced performance that just provides more evidence that he is another "star" who never gets enough credit for his acting. The bonus material, like the "Fight Club" DVD, is outstanding also.
Rating: Summary: If you hated this movie or thought the plot had holes... Review: then you missed the point. 1) This movie is a study in contrast! Morgan Freeman is an older, black, unmarried man on his last case; Brad Pitt is young, white, married and on his first case. The constant noise outside is a contrast to the quite voices of the cast. The chaotic music at the beginning and end contrasts the classical played at other times. The beauty of the library contrasts the horror of the crime scene photos. Parts of the script are writen in stone and parts are ad-libbed, ie... Pitt in the car w/ Spacey...Etc ... 2) Seven (7) is a concluding number. The case lasts for 7 days with 7 victims of the 7 deadly sins. At the end, at 7 pm, it's light outside, July (7), etc, etc... 3) The symbolism is thick. Everyone is wearing black and/or white. The first case is in the dark (evil/the unknown) and the end in is full day-light, truth/knowledge. Spacey is covered in blood and then wears red, symbolic blood. And on, and on... This movie is brilliant. If you didn't get it I feel sorry for you. And if you thought the plot had holes in it then you missed the point. Get this DVD! There's nothing else like it!
Rating: Summary: Not for the faint at heart Review: SE7EN is one of thouse movies that grabed movie fans with the victims of the seven deadly sins. The DVD really gives you features galore with deleted scenes and alternate endings just to name a VERY few because it is packed with it on disk 2. The movie itself was also a great movie with the dark settings to get you in the mood of something special. I highly recomend this movie for anyone who has a moderate or strong stomach.
Rating: Summary: effective little horror movie Review: For what it does it's a effective little horror film if a bit gruesome to watch at times. Unfortunately this is Finchers only good movie, he's not that great of a director. He seems to be lost in his own visuals. Let's face it, other than seven none of his other movies made money, and most of them were flawed. The Game kept running on, Fight Club had a cop out ending and Alien3 was just plain awful. If given a decent script and if he sticks to it, like seven, he can actually make a decent film. Left to his own devices tho and he's off on a tangent. Some directors are like that.
