Summary: Great movie!
Review: This is a great movie... I haven't seen such a great movie for a long time. The story is great, the way the movie plays is very unique, which is awesome. I'm upset that it's not very famous up here in Canada, but after I saw it I made some of my friends go see it :) It's a really great movie, I saw it twice in the theatres. I can't wait for the DVD...

Summary: The emperor¿s new tattoos¿
Review: Ok, here's the thing: I know this movie is getting rave reviews, and I can't quite understand why. I didn't exactly hate it, but the hype is unwarranted. Initially I thought I might be missing something, but ultimately, there's really no social commentary that isn't made completely obvious. The premise of the movie is as follows: Leonard (Guy Pearce) is the victim of a crime that leaves him without the ability to commit anything to his short-term memory. Therefore, he utilizes maps, Polaroid's and even some hauntingly beautiful tattoo artistry to aid him in his everyday life and namely on his mission to avenge the murder of his wife. This alone would have made for a good movie; however, my stomach starts the churn with nausea when you add to the mix the fact that the movie takes place in reverse order!! What does this mean? NO CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!! Director Guy Nolan further complicates matters by throwing in some flashback sequences to give us a sense of Leonard's predicament. The chronology is unnecessary, trite and predictable - you always know when to expect the flashbacks so they're not essentially as stimulating as Nolan may have intended. At least give the madness some variety! Quentin Tarantino did it with Pulp Fiction and pulled it off nicely. Nolan gets an "F" in the volatility department. The ending is not bad, admittedly, but it doesn't make up for a film that is lukewarm at best. So, the final consensus - mildly entertaining, but I could find better things to do with a Saturday night. See the movie because everyone's talking about it, but don't say I didn't warn you.

Summary: Memento - the most original movie of the year
Review: I used to believe that the best movies are thoese that are released into the major chain theaters. I used to. Memento, though a somewhat smaller production than traditional Hollywood fair, was beautiful, moving, and in my estimations the most original movie of the year. Though I doubt that it will ever be showing in the huge cineplexes next to Pearl Harbor, this movie is infinitely more valuable than even 100 of those $200 million blockbusters. The acting was superb, the plot was brilliant, and unlike most of the main stream movies these days, it left me guessing up until the end. Admittedly, this movie is not for everyone. If you're idea of a good movie is one with huge special effects and mediocre, over-used plotlines, then power to ya! But if you are looking for something different, something outside of the usual Hollywood thinking, then check out Memento. Trust me, my friends, it's worth travelling to that dank independent cinema to see this one.

Summary: A fascinating film
Review: Last year, 2000, was not that good of a year for movies... at least in my case. I had begun to wonder if contemporary films would ever be the same again. Memento proved me wrong. Christopher Nolan tells the story of Leonard Shelby, an insurance investigator, who, after a break-in to his and his wife's home, suffered a severe blow to the head, leaving him forever incapable of developing new memories; therefore, he has no short-term memory. So every 15 minutes or so, his memory completely vanishes, and all he knows is who he is, what happened to his wife, everything before the break-in. Guy Pearce does a great job of playing Leonard; Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano also play their roles as Natalie and Teddy, respectively, outstandingly. Also, Stephen Tobolowsky is just perfect for his role as Sammy Jankis, a man who also developed the same problem as Leonard. This film really messes with your mind, as the entire movie is played in reverse; for example, one scene might show Leonard arriving at a restaurant. The next scene shows Leonard getting in his car to drive to the restaurant. And then the scene after that has Leonard leaving his hotel room to get to his car. So every 15 minutes or so, a new scene starts, so we as the viewer get to experience Leonard's amnesia first-hand. The result is a confusing, but yet extremely satisfying movie that you should definitely see more than once. You will definitely be thinking about this movie a long time after you've seen it.

Review: This movie has a guarenteed nomination for Best Screenplay. The ending is one that will make you want to view the movie once more after finishing it. The best thriller since The Usual Suspects. Guy peirce has never been better and I believe that we will see more gold from Chistopher Nolan in the future.

Summary: Funny, I don't feel drunk...
Review: wow. sometimes we go to movies to be entertained, sometimes we go to think. this one had me oooohhhin and ahhhhhhin and scratching my head and wondering what would happen next...i love the way the film was shot: the repetition of scenes, the way time was manipulated through the film...i love movies that " go off the beaten path " and the casting is first-rate ..guy pearce is incredible...you pity him as he's on his quest to find his wife's killer,then you wonder if he did it... because he can't make new memories, the extremes that he goes through to hang on to them is drastic...you will want to see it again, not just to discover things you may have missed, but because it's that good. very few films i have seen more than once....

Summary: Excellant!
Review: My husband and I saw this film at the 2001 Cleveland International Film Festival and it was awesome. From beginning to end we were glued to our seats. Although the theater was sold out, (a second showing was opened due to overwhelming demand) we forgot there was anyone else in the room. I can't wait until I can purchase the DVD!

Review: feels like 9 hours. You watch this movie in reverse, which is an original and fascinating concept, but it unfolds like Ronald Reagan on heroin.

Summary: Thought Provoking
Review: You'd better pay attention through this one or you'll be confused when the closing credits roll. A unique film in the way it presents the story, with the scenes unfolding in reverse. I can't say it was great, but it was good, different, and sure beats 94.72% of the other films that come out these days. And a whale of a lot more interesting to watch.

Summary: HUH???
Review: This is probably one of the strangest movies I have seen in a long time. A movie that begins at the ends, and ends with the beginning....Strange concept these days, but in all, very effective. When I first left the theater, I thought, "waste of my time...no way will I see it again...go put in Billy Elliot in the DVD at home..." but after spending the day today, it kept running through my mind...."I've gotta see it again..." It's certainly not a movie to take the kids to see...and you need to go in with an open mind and prepare for some strange goings on. Guy Pearce was superb...as was the supporting cast. Lots of vulgarity, but if I lost my short term memory, you can bet I'd be swearing up a storm, too! Go see it...I don't think you'll be disappointed.
