Summary: I like submarine movies and this is one the best!!!
Review: Sean Connery, he is the only person who can play the captain of the mighty typhoon class submarine and I hope they make the Hunt for Red October 2 about how Ramius and the officers are doing in the U.S.

Summary: Simply Amazing
Review: This movie will blow you away with it's blend of Clancy realism and action. Movies that use real science are few and far between, but this is one. Fantastic acting melded with grim realsim. Buy it!

Summary: Great Movie!
Review: I read the book and I think that the movie was excellent too! Sean Connery and James Earl Jones were my favorites, but the rest of the cast was well-picked also. Anyone who likes exciting and war-related movies needs to see this!

Summary: One of the best-executed Clancy books!
Review: Though some of the later Clancy works (and I've read all Clancy, except the "Op Center" series), when translated into film were absolute rubbish, this film stands out for me as a film I could watch again and again... Even then, there were 'dry patches' in the plot...

Summary: Fast moving excellent underwater submarine drama
Review: When I read the book of the Hunt for Red October I simply could not put the book down. This was Tom Clancy's first and best novel. The movie is excellent, a fine cast, very well produced and directed. The movie is a shortened version of the book. To put all of the book on film would have meant a 6 hour movie. So we have an intelligent shortening of the super book. The movie is the story of the defection of a formidable submarine (the Red October) and it's crew. The Russian rulers are naturally not amused and want their boat back, or sunk, or anything except falling into American hands. They will stop at nothing to achieve this outcome. So you have the movie story in a nutshell, but of course it is much more than that. This is a fast paced thriller, that thrills. In my mind it matches with other fast paced movies such as "Aliens". The pace never lets up, and I for one wished they had made a 6 hour version of the whole book. Sean Connery as the thoughtful Russian skipper of the Red October, is, as usual, excellent. I cannot imagine anyone else in this role. Alex Baldwin is good as Jack Ryan, I can not imagine why he did not stick with the role in the follow up movies of the other Tom Clancy novels. He did not, and Harrison Ford took over. I suppose we should be greatful for small mercies! Others in the cast are very good, and the movie is well done in the DVD format. I also have the movie in the Laser Disk format, the DVD is an improvement in both sound and picture.

Summary: Exciting drama with emotional power.
Review: I love watching this movie over and over. The combination of Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin as two characters who understand and then respect each other but must figure out a way to achieve their goals in the midst of a very dangerous war machine is gripping as well as emotionally powerful. I am always moved, too, by the low-key but powerful interactions among the military men from top to bottom as they grapple with this very dangerous situation. Bravery and smarts are mixed together in a very human, realistic way - no movie grandstanding here. A movie to keep in the library.

Summary: The best Navy movie ever!!!
Review: Truly a spectacular film!! However, I do agree with most of you; for a DVD, the picture could have been better (that's Paramount for ya!). Other than that, the movie itself gives a breathtaking view of modern naval combat technology. Bravo!

Summary: Great Movie, Poor Quality, WRONGLY ADVERTISED ASPECT RATIO
Review: This is a great movie. I agree with other reviews that the DVD quality is.....less than it should and could be.

My main beef is with Amazon who advertised this video with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, when it is obviously 2.35:1 when viewed.

Summary: Connery and Baldwin are fantastic!
Review: Sean Connery does a wonderful job of bringing even the most boring parts to life. This is well-acted, well-written, and well-directed. The best performance, however, may be given by James Earl Jones as Admiral Greer. He is his magnificent self, heading a marvelous cast which includes Sam Neill, Alec Baldwin, and Tim Curry. Anyone who likes war movies will absoulutely LOVE this film. Might bethe best movie ever made.
