Summary: ...this dream place....
Review: The first half of the movie is as good or better than Blue Velvet. The second half has both the upsides and downsides of Lynch's post Blue Velvet work & is reminiscent of his Twin Peaks/Lost Highway period.
The first half is really good though. Two strong story lines, one involving an amnesiac Laura Harring & the other a newly arrived to Hollywood Naomi Watts. Harring is fleeing something and doesn't know what it is & Watts is pursuing something, a dream to be a star. The two end up in the same strange apartment complex, and there is chemistry between them.
The second half of the film takes that chemistry and performs some surreal alchemy with it. Not only does any semblance of a straightforward plot vanish but the characters themselves become different people. This is Lynch only terrain where dreams and reality are no longer neatly separated. Some of it is highly charged but some of it seems a little too reminiscent of some of Lynch's earlier surrealisms.
I preferred the first half which ends at the time the two women become most initmate and go to a midnight theatre. That theatre is the threshold where one reality ends and the more dream infused reality begins, the theatre where the female singer sings a Spanish version of Orbison's "Crying" bringing both women to tears....a scene and song you will not soon forget. Movie fans will think of Bergman more than once in this Persona swapping movie. The first half feels like an updated version of Persona in a Hollywood noir setting, an enticing blend. The second half becomes more, well, Lynch. The second half sacrifices continuity for visceral power, as you acclimate to this new movie within the movie you approve of this strnage twisting and the turning inside out of normal linear narrative. The strongest male in the movie is a movie director(Theroux) who looks like Lynch maybe did when he was 25. That movie maker within the movie makes one think of Fellini's 8 1/2 and Truffaut's Day for Night but the situation/character is not developed. He's there merely to pad the reality/dream conceit and as identity conduit than as a full character with a plot line of his own. Naomi Watts does about ten scenes in this movie which will floor movie goers of any persuasion.
The first half sets you up in an appealing 'Blue Velvet' innocent on the surface/corrupt beneath the surface situation and with two extraordinary multi-dimensional characters and the second half subverts everything so that the corruption is on the surface/innocence buried beneath. Days after seeing Mulholland Drive its the second disturbing nocturne of the second half that continues to haunt the too bright afternoon.

Summary: Couple quibbles, but overall...
Review: I have to agree that this is one of the best flicks I've seen in a while. Wonderful atmosphere, a great translation of the film onto DVD (great picture and sound), and a classic Lynch film. I do agree, however, that, like most Lynch, this DVD is absolutely bare bones... you get the movie, a very short theatrical trailer, and a limited list of cast biographies. The lack of chapter breaks is a big pain as well... I'm not much of a scene skipper, so this wouldn't usually bug me, but when you pause the movie to get up for a bathroom break and then accidentally hit the chapter rewind button instead of play and can't find where you were again without fast forwarding, it's a neck cramp (not that such a thing ever happened to me when I watched it last night). As for the "mysterious" plot, it can be boiled down to a simple revenge fantasy (which is what the first 3/4 of the movie is) that, because it's Lynch, takes a few very interesting and watchable turns... one thing this edition DOES have is a clue sheet by Lynch himself on what to watch for in the film if you want to solve the mystery. Guess that'll have to replace the commentary track :SAs a straightforward movie it's great, but as one of the new breed of spoiled DVD brats that expects the moon and the stars every time I buy a flick, I was disappointed in how unexploited the technology was. Still, can't give Lynch anything less than five stars...

Summary: Mulholland Dr. DVD
Review: A definite must-own DVD. For those unfamiliar with the film, Mulholland Drive is David Lynch's masterful portrayal of revenge, guilt, lust, and love. At times disturbing, funny, and erotic, this film is a masterpiece. Some may complain that the DVD is all bare bones and lacking in features. While there is no chapter-select option, Mulholland Dr. should only be viewed in its entirety. The picture and sound quality are excellent, although there is only a default setting. The DVD is also lacking in extras. It contains only a few cast notes and the theatrical trailer. A director's commentary would have been nice. But I can't imagine anyone purchasing this movie for the extras. It is worth mentioning that included in the DVD case is a list of ten hints intended to aid in interpreting the film. Those unfamiliar with David Lynch's works may find this a very helpful addition, but I personally would have rather seen it left out. Make no mistake, Mulholland Dr. is a work of art and it does not does no service to walk us through the film. But those who have issues with a "cheat sheet" can simply choose to ignore it. This is something of a bare bones DVD. While it has very few extras, the meat is in the movie. And what a movie it is! And with the excellent sound and picture quality, you can't go wrong with this one.

Summary: Haunting Mystery, One of the Best Movies about Movies
Review: David Lynch directs a dark, mystery film set in Hollywood. Naomi Watts stars as a young, wanna-be actress. Or is she? She meets Laura Herring, a woman who survives a car wreck with amnesia, and both try to discover the woman's identity. In the midst of this, a young movie director, played by Justin Theroux, faces opposition when trying to re-cast the lead actress for his movie. What do the two stories have in common? They both contain a dark, almost paranoid atmosophere, and they both lead to an incredible climax that will have you seeing the film a second time to sift through the mystery for a conclusion.
The film contains many scenes that do not seem related and yet, they fit together nicely. Through the chaos, there's a logic that's haunting and sad.

as for Lynch, well, he's a genius.
(at least he won a palm d'or for "best director" at the cannes film festival) Mulholland drive (with amelie & Fotr), was by far!, the best film of the year.

Summary: Chapter Tracking?
Review: First of all, I loved this movie and saw it a couple of times in theatres. Had to own it the day that it was released on DVD. I'm watching it now and it's still great, but I can't advance through the chapters (I'm an hour in and still on Chapter 1). Was this intentional or is the DVD defective? I have a feeling that it's intentional, but want to make sure. Thanks!

Summary: Great movie, but DVD has no chapters
Review: I just thought I'd mention a couple of things - I really enjoyed this movie, but the first time I saw it the last half-hour completely confused me. I just bought the DVD, which came out today, and immediately watched the last half hour, and although I will not explain everything here (you can probably figure it out if you care) it does make sense, that is, there is a logic to it, it's just something that's so hard to believe the first time you see it that one's mind utterly fails to put the pieces together. However, I have not watched the movie all the way through yet now that I understand it, so I can't really give a final verdict on whether it totally works or not, whether it's flawed or not. I'm hoping it's not, but can't say yet. However, I thought the tone of the film was mindblowingly good, and original. The way he is able to get inside a kind of dream logic and utterly defy it becoming silly or ironic is staggering. Nobody else is doing anything like it. He is a real master. Beyond that, all I want to mention is that the complete lack of bonus material on the DVD is disappointing. It doesn't even have chapters, which is I guess some sort of deliberate decision, perhaps on Lynch's part, I don't know. It's not that big a deal, but it is odd, and was mildly annoying given that I happened to want to just watch the end again, so had to fast forward through the rest of it. Perhaps Lynch doesn't want us to do that, thus the lack of chapters? I don't know. Anyway, extraordinary movie. That's the main thing.

Review: If you are a David Lynch fan, or just into offbeat flicks, you will not be disappointed.
HOWEVER, They chose to print this 2 hour and 27 minute film WITHOUT chapters!!! This means that you must watch the movie at one sitting from beginning to end. This is fine for those with lots of time on their hands. If you are like me and can only devote an hour or so at a time to view a movie, it makes things difficult. The movie itself if great.

Summary: The Best Film in a True Genius' Awesome Career
Review: Let me start by saying that I was (and still am)a HUGE "Twin Peaks" fan, and consequently became a huge David Lynch fan, it's a natural progression. I always thought "Blue Velvet" was Lynch's film masterpiece, as did most of his fans and film critics as well. The reason that film went over so well was that it was pure Lynch:odd,erotic,surreal but strangely fascinating at the same time, and it was even more of those things back in the mid 80's. The thing about "Mulholland Drive" is that it's 2002, and this movie illicits the same feelings, even more so. It is so difficult to shock, fascinate or even interest movie fans these days. In our society, nothing shocks us anymore. This man truly has a gift, and I don't know that we will ever see another director in our lifetimes that can match his gift, he is WAY ahead of his time. There is one word to describe this film: HYPNOTIC. It truly is his masterpiece, and it's not as hard to figure out as most people think. As far as the acting, Naomi Watts deserved an Academy Award for one of the best performances by a young actress, and a newcomer at that, as I can ever remember seeing. Laura Herring was very good as well, as was Justin Theroux. It is pure bliss for Lynch fans, with the usual surreal musical sequences and nightmarish visions we have come to know from some of his previous work. There is however, one element that has been lacking in some of his other films: CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. Even though for most of the film we're not exactly sure who the characters are, or even if they are real, we fall in love with both of the female leads in a way that has been missing with some of his lead characters in other films. And I think that is the final piece of the puzzle that makes this film an absolute piece of cinematic brilliance from beginning to end. For non-Lynch fans who watch this film, all I can say is: Try to keep an open mind and enjoy it, don't try to figure it all out, just let yourself get caught up in this remarkable piece of work, you will not regret it.

Summary: Lynch's best... No doubt!
Review: ok... I gave 5 stars.. To the movie.. and the movie only...
This DVD's not that bad... (I've seen worse) But the three problems about this DVD excluding the lack of special features are... 1. No Chapter Selection: The entire film is in one track.
2.The ... studio...digitally blured Laura Elena's vagina in the [lesbian] scene... Wich it's not that important... But it's very distracting.
3. Almost no information about Lynch or the Movie itself. One thing that I really apreciated was that Lynch included 10 clues to unlocking the thriller... Wich are very helpful( Do not read the clues untill your second viewing. But besides that... The movie is unpredictible , it looks excellent , great music... And interesting... The year's best film...
