Rating: Summary: for 399.99 for DTS/Digital you cant go wrong! Review: best system philips has made yet! it makes DVD movies come to life as if you've never seen them before. excellent sound, selectible modes of digital/dts/prologic. even if you do not own a dvd it makes vhs/tv/satlilite come alive as if you were there! the virtual 3d makes phantom speakers for those with only 2 channel output, the speakers are crisp and clear to the pin drop and connections are easy and color coded with a reference card. the receiver automaticaly sets the correct Digital signal if it has any to DTS or Digital or Prologic. if your looking for a excellent system and don't want to spend over 400 this is the system of choice.
Rating: Summary: Pleased for the price. Review: For the low price I got this system for, it has been execptional. Speakers are twice the size of than those of normal systems at this price, which is nice because I don't care for satelites. It also sounds very good, competing with systems in the 700-900 dollar price range. It's 'Hall' mode sounds good with stereo music, doesn't modify the L-R channels, simply adds an ambience based on the difference between them. Pro Logic decoding was crisp and clear with encoded material, playing Unreal Tournament with my PC connected sounded very convincing. Crisp and clear Dolby Digital and DTS decoding. AM/FM reception a little to be desired, but does an acceptable job. The only weak link would have to be the subwoofer. Clearly not Phillips' strong point, it sounds thumpy, only goes down to 35 hertz, and you have to turn the thing on and off, which is irritating because its easy to forget to turn it off, thus risking frying it. However, the whole thing cost me 350 bucks. Anyway, this system is surely worth the money if you are on a budget, and you'll get hours of entertainment from it.
Rating: Summary: Great system for the price Review: I bought the 980D and loved the larger than most sized speakers that came with it. The 100 watts per channel was comparable to systems going up to 1000 dollars. The main thing is the sound, which is excellent.

Rating: Summary: Great system for the price Review: I have had this system for about 8 months now and it has performed splendidly. The DTS decoding is crisp and compares to systems costing 3 times as much. I had no trouble setting up the remote to also control my Sanyo TV and JVC SVHS player. Has all the inputs and outputs you would need. Some people's trouble with the SUB WOOFER output may be that the output is turned off if you have the front speakers in the LARGE MODE. This seems to be the default mode at power up. The speakers should be set to the SMALL MODE since they do not reproduce sounds below 40HZ, then the sub works just fine for a 5.25in cone.
Rating: Summary: TEST OF SERVICE Review: I just purchased the theater system on Dec.02,00. It was easy to hook up and quite a good system for the price. But 32 days later, in the middle of a movie I lost my subwoofer. It seems for some reason the sub would work, only when the center channel was off. ITS BEEN IN THE SHOP SINCE. We will see how it holds up when I get it back.
Rating: Summary: SUBWOOFER PROBLEMS TOO Review: I purchased this unit and have had a similar experience to "A Test of Service" in his review posted here. The subwoofer only works in certain modes and does not function when you want it to most in the full surround sound mode. Philips must have some sort of quality control issue with these units, so buyer beware. I called Philips to inquire about this issue and their so-called toll free "help" line was little help at all. Until Philips get this bug resolved, I cannot recommend this unit. For me, the receiver was defective right out of the box. The remote control is terribly designed and not at all intuitive. You will probably want to throw the remote away after a few hours of scratching your head trying to make it work. Caveat emptor on this one.
Rating: Summary: Not universal Remote Review: I think this setup is well worth its price. I actually own the 990mx which comes with the DVD player. I have no complaints other than the remote. It is not a universal remote. I have tried this with my Toshiba 32 TV, a Sharp 27 TV, a sanyo VCR, and none will work. I have contacted support, and they said tough luck, the device is not guarenteed to work with other devices.
Rating: Summary: Great System, Great Price Review: I was looking for a complete home theater solution and was incredibly pleased with the MX980D. It was easy to install, easy to configure and sounds incredible.
