Description:

RCA's 50-watt-per-channel RT2300 is a highly flexible home theater in a box (HTiB) with plenty of inputs and outputs. With a surround receiver, five speakers, and a powered subwoofer, all you'll need is a DVD player to enjoy Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound.

The RT2300, which also sports an AM/FM tuner and a programmable remote control, should prove extremely easy to set up and operate, even for novices. Many HTiBs in this price range drastically limit the number of source components you can feed them, but not the RT2300. Its many audio and video connections let you plug in just about anything you'd like (with the exception of a turntable). The RT2300 even has a complete set of audio-video inputs (including S-video) right on its faceplate.

The speaker complement is pretty standard for HtiB, with four identical front and rear satellite speakers, a center channel which uses two of the same mid/bass drivers found in the satellites, and a down-firing 50-watt powered subwoofer.

The 50-watt-per-channel receiver delivers plenty of power to the main speakers, and, when combined with the subwoofer, the result is a full-bodied sound with decent, if not earth-shattering, bass. Although it doesn't go into the super deep bass regions, this powered-sub was good to around 50 Hz in our room (missing little more than the deepest tonal octave) and had a nice, punchy quality.

The RT2300's sound filled our medium-sized (300-square-foot) room well, but did show just a bit of strain on some of our more hard-hitting movie soundtracks. Be careful that your room isn't too big and that you keep the RT2300 at medium to semi-loud levels.

Overall, the RCA RT2300 has a lot to offer in an HtiB system--just make sure it fits your space and listening-level needs.

Pros:

  • Lots of inputs and outputs
  • Easy to use
  • Programmable remote

Cons:

  • Limited bass output
  • Limited volume capability
