Rating: Summary: Stylish And Exciting. Review: Brian DePalma and Al Pacino reunite after their epic crime drama, "Scarface," to make "Carlito's Way." Of the two, I would say "Scarface" is the best. But still, "Carlito's Way" is an excellent film about a man destined to clean up his life but the past begins to chase him down. I am reminded of a line Pacino says in "The Godfather Part 3," "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in." He could have used it in this film. Like the best films of Oliver Stone and Martin Scorsese, DePalma brings his film to life with his signature: Style. DePalma creates an exciting movie through the rich cinematography, costumes, sets and camera angles. As in "Scarface," this film is filled with that cool Latin style and there's enough detail that makes this film worth more than one viewing. Pacino gives an entertaining and extremely effective performance. The violence here is done with style (also as in "Scarface") and flows with the story and characters. We get the sense that the film is always alive and we're always interested in what's happening. The soundtrack is a mix of great songs. Even Carlos Santana is included with "Oye Como Va." In the end, "Carlito's Way" is a great movie with interesting characters, not least John Leguizamo's well-dressed hood, Benny Blanco From The Bronx. The story is intriguing and sometimes passionate. And the movie is visually rich at every corner. "Carlito's Way" is excellent filmmaking from one of the masters.
Rating: Summary: Pacino/Penn/De Palma at their best. Review: This film came to me highly recommended, and I pass it on highly recommended. Scarface was stunning, but in Carlito's Way Pacino and De Palma's relationship has matured. A great movie.
Rating: Summary: One of the most overlooked movies of the 90's Review: It's only natural to compare "Carlito's Way" with "Scarface". And while the latter gets the lion's share of attention, "Carlito's Way" is the superior film. From the technical aspects, to the story and character development to dramatic tension, it is better in every way. I never once cared what happens to Tony in "Scarface". Not to mention that much of the violence seemed unnecessary and silly. You actually care about Carlito and want him to get what he's looking for, despite his past. It's also a little ironic that one of Pacino's most under-rated performances comes during the same year he wins his one and only oscar for his most over-rated performance in the painfully annoying "Scent of a Woman".
Rating: Summary: Eminently watchable film! Review: Don't believe Leonard Maltin's review about the film being flawed. What flaws? Like Mr. Maltin with his glasses and nerdiness knows anything about life on the streets. He also stated that 'The Color Purple' had flaws... I only wish more films had flaws like the two just mentioned. If there is a flaw it's only in Mr. Pacino's accent which could've used some serious work. That notwithstanding his work as always (excepting 'Any Given Sunday') is absolutely outstanding.Any film that makes you feel for the characters in any way has done a tremendous thing in my humble opinion. In this film you will feel honest compassion for Carlito Brigante (Pacino) while at the same time you'll be unsympathetic toward him for some of the decisions he makes. Carlito is a man torn between the life he wants and the destiny to which he seemingly can't escape. You can't run away from who you are as hard as you may try. Loyalty is an admirable quality when it's directed towards the right principles and people. Misdirected it can have tragic consequences. Sean Penn is fabulous as Carlito's corrupt and dishonest lawyer (Kleinfeld) in addition to fine supporting performances from Penelope Ann Miller and John Lequizamo (a better dramatic actor than comedian) In the end it's about the pursuit of the american dream and the challenges we face along the way. NOT TO BE MISSED!
Rating: Summary: One of my favorites Review: This movie is both a serious film and sometimes a pulp-fiction style film. The portrayls by Al Pacino and Sean Penn & others reflect both qualities, but especially when the scene with Tony Taglialucci (Joseph Siravo) & David Kleinfeld (Penn) occurs at Riker's Island Prison Barge, the 'pulp' style shines through. All the characters possess a richness that enables the film to stand on its own merits. But when viewed several times, it becomes obvious that Brian DePalma & Martin Bregman have anchored this film into their prior history. (Scarface) Many of the same actors appear in both films. One scene stands out as offering the viewer such tight attention to detail that I could barely believe it. -At the disco, Benny Blanco (John Leguizamo) is making a noticeable entry into the front door with his gang. The reaction by the people who know AND don't know his is big. Benny Blanco is walking briskly and swinging his body back & forth. Discogoers who are flanking his entry down the hall all make flagrant notice of his entry, turning heads and turning around to see who this obviously important person is. Then there's Saso's (Jorge Porcel) reaction. He looks shocked when he sees Benny. Benny Blanco walks quickly right up to Saso, grabs Saso by the throat and demands his money and that he's not screwing around. Saso looks terrified and, with his throat held by Blanco's hand, shifts his eyes sideways to see what his gang is suggesting by Blanco's actions. Saso unconvincingly says to Blanco, "Are you kidding?" Blanco then says that he IS kidding, and kisses Saso on the cheek. You have to see Saso's reaction at this point; it is priceless. I recommend watching this scene in slow motion. Penelope Ann Miller is excellent as Carlito's girlfriend and confidante.
Rating: Summary: so-so film Review: sean penn is the real star of the film.re-making scarface isn't gonna happening again so fougetaboutit and get over it.this is slap stick film making.not very original.
Rating: Summary: Great Review: Brian DePalma serves up a masterpiece. Sean Penn gives the performance that we all knew he could, and Al Pacino fits this part like a glove. The camera work is the unsung hero in this epic tale of loyalty and betrayal.
Rating: Summary: The movie was great and the actors were spectaculor ! Review: awesome movie ! I think they should be rewarded much more
Rating: Summary: Part "nostalgia piece," part gangster flick, all good Review: This movie is really one of my favorites for several reasons. The first is the winning performance of Al Pacino. The second is the surprising, volatile performance by Sean Penn. And the third reason is the great music and setting from the disco era of my childhood. I really think this movie, while not a blockbuster, ushered in a 70's resurgence. Also look for John Leguizamo in a great supporting role.
Rating: Summary: Could Pacino possibly be any better? Review: Pacino is one of the greatest actors that ever graced the "silver screen" and in this movie you get a true sence of why he is the best. This film touched me. It gives the viewer the harsh reality of what it is the make a fresh start after being in prison and its also a beautiful love story. I really liked this movie. One of my favorites
