Rating: Summary: Unmissable is just one word for this unique film! Review: I was very lucky to have been introduced to this film at a young age, as I have had countless hours of joy watching this masterpiece... time and time again. The Great Train Robbery has a unique quality, that all films strive to achieve, which is the capacity to entice an audience to return! It is an intelligent, crime comedy, with so much to offer any individual. Superb performances from the likes of the greats Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland, for which I shall always remember them for, with a great supporting cast of familiar British faces. The story tells of a handful of criminals, equipped with their own individual skills, who aspire to pull of the biggest train robbery to date. Set in a Victorian London, the film takes us through trains, stations, courts, prisons, and the streets of London... in a chase to outrun the police and each other. The crime's success depends on their charm, speed, cunning, love of cats and a change of clothes! For me the film is complete with the final scene, which is one of the most exciting and gratifying that I have ever had the pleasure to watch. It's escapism at its best... watch, but be prepared for admiration of the two characters, of Connery and Sutherland! The film is great, in its truest sense!
Rating: Summary: Great movie. Makes you want to steal something. Review: Lot of fun. Wonderful Victorian era sets. Very exciting scenes.
Rating: Summary: A Good Movie Tainted Review: Sean Connery plays his part well in this lively adaptation of the book about the first train robbery. His sidekick, Ager, is not so convincing, but Connery carries the team single-handedly. His crafty lover, played by Downs, brings nothing new to a role that we've seen overplayed in too many suspense and action films. My main criticism of this movie is the obsession with highly explicit sexual imagery interwoven throughout the film, which leaves one wondering how in the world it merited a PG rating. I expected to see a fun and witty action movie, and The Great Train Robbery is definitely that, but whoever decided to add the sexual elements made a bad call. Most, if not all, are uneccessary to the plot and must therefore have been tossed in to satisfy those movie-goers that can't enjoy a good action flick without a cheap sexual thrill. What an insult.
Rating: Summary: great movie Review: The Great Train Robbery, it's about a man named Edward Pierce who teams up with a bunch of crooks to attempt the first robbery from a moving train. The movie was based on a true event that happened in 1855 so there really was a Great Train Robbery.I think this was a great movie, infact a person who doesn't like trains will still like this movie(but I like trains). I especially like the ending when Edward finally robs the train but he doesn't hold a gun to people's heads when doing it.
Rating: Summary: Donald SUTHERLAND and SEAN CONNERY in a same movie ! Review: Theses two actors was mades to play this MOVIE many years ago ! The quality of their interpretation is exclusive and this story was a true ROBBERY at the END OF THE 19TH CENTURY ! And while that's just a fiction whitch based on unreals facts, this is however a reality ! A VERY GOOD MOVIE !
Rating: Summary: This Movie is Hilarious!!!!! Review: This movie is so funny. It has action, romance, and comedy all into one. I absolutely loved the scene where Agar was in the cofin with a dead cat. I had to rewind it and watch again.
Rating: Summary: Derail it Review: This movie is too way too slow to be entertaining. There is not one thing memorable about it, and we know, because we've owned it for quite sometime, watched it disappointly once, and just previewed it again to make sure that it was the dullish trash that it really is.
Sean Connery is just too boring in this, sort of a James Bondish rogue of the late 19th century with his sexy babe. (Don't get me wrong, Bond is a good thing, in a Bond movie.)
We got taken in to buying it because of Connery/the period/the costumes/the promising story line of a great train robbery (oh, the fantasy of heisting tonnes of gold and getting away with it, rich, rich, rich!) Well, it's a pooper out of Pinewood Studios, England. I wish it wasn't, but it is. (Incidentally, Pinewood also did many if not all of the James Bond films...)
Instead of putting this in the dumpster, we're giving our DVD copy to a bachelor friend who likes westerns and sexy babes in movies. He'll probably get a kick out of this, cuz' his favorite movie of all time is "Lonesome Dull...I mean Dove."
Rating: Summary: Give This Movie a Chance Review: This movie was not only Crighton's directorial debut, but at least the second best movie made out of one of his novels (pending "Eaters of the Dead" which is in production). Do yourself a favor and indulge yourself with Connery, Sutherland, Downe, et al. in a wonderful excursion into Vicoriana.
Rating: Summary: Little Known Exciting Thrill Ride. Superb Cinema! Review: This over-looked gem is superb in every detail. The plot concerns a charming rogue, faking a 'sharp businessman' played by Sean Connery, trying to relieve a fortified railway train of its gold. The film is based on a thriller written by Micheal (Jurassic Park) Crichton and is quite thrilling. It has superb Cinematography by the master Geoffrey (Superman) Unsworth B.S.C. and the outstanding score is by the superlative Jerry (Star Trek) Goldsmith. The film grips you from the start and includes a superb cast. The film details the planning and exection of the robbery of a railway train transporting gold from London to the Crimea. The effort of relieving the gold from the train by Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland is meticulous and quite exciting, helped by the fast moving script, cinematography and score. The atmosphere of 1850s London is startling and extremely well conveyed to the screen. This is a highly recommended and thrilling movie.
