Review: Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. This movie is awful on so many levels. It could have been just another forgettable, below-average cyber-action movie, until it raised the bile to the edge of my throat by having the unmitigated nerve to try and be clever and furthermore paint the villian as some sort of complex moral hero. Travolta chews the scenery as yet another in the long line of devilishly evil cyber-terrorist, but there's little he can do in a role bound and gagged by pure cliche. Jackman is forgettable as the blackmailed computer hacker (if only all nerds looked so buff), and his accent is a constant distraction (why couldn't he just be an Australian hacking expert?) Berry is pure eye-candy, hung on a string and paraded around to divert the attention of the male demographic from the plot holes large enough to drive convoys through. Don Cheadle. Jeez, talk about wasting a great actor. I could go on. Vinnie Jones, for instance, used as just another hackneyed evil cohort. But now I'm starting to depress myself by recalling more of the film than I'd prefer to. If you insist on not avoiding this movie like the plague, at most wait for it to appear on tv, watch the first 10 minutes (that's where the extra star comes from, and I'm being extremely generous), then turn it off and forget about it for the rest of your life. Consider it an act of charity for your intelligence.

Summary: Bad movie with excellent sound
Review: Let me begin by telling you that this is a bad movie. So this review is not about the movie itself but about what I liked about the DVD. The sound is just great, especially in the explosion and car chasing scenes. Also, Halle Berry is beautiful and this movie shows her like never before. So, if you like action movies, can enjoy good audio and think that Halle Berry is a gorgeous lady you should see this movie.

Summary: Some value here, but nothing great
Review: After the reviews I was expecting a really good movie. So much for hopes. I give this movie a middle rating only because there are some great special effects and there is enough action going on to keep it entertaining. It falls in the rental category under "something to watch when the wife/girlfriend is out". Berry's boob scene was mostly embarrassing. If she is going to pose semi nude in a film, the least she could do is insist that the situation at least has something to do with the actual plot, I mean it is supposed to be a movie. There is a scene in the film in which she is in her underwear that actually does play into the plot of the movie and makes sense being in the film. And by the way, note to producers, she is infinitely more sexy in this scene than in the bare breast shot. The one great special effect sequence in this movie is well worth watching and perhaps gives this one an extra star. It would recommend this movie when you are in the mood for a simple guys film, entertaining but nothing special.

Review: plot holes. obviously rewritten ending to please the post september crowds. laundry list of faults and factual inconsistencies. the worst computer non-sense to hit the screen since the last William Gibson adaptation. it starts strong with a teenage-caliber struggle for philosophy via "Dog Day Afternoon" and one of the best produced special effects sequences ever. but quickly breaks into a plodding, trotting, plodding traipse through young punk male fantasies about being able to achieve great feats of hacking while being serviced by hookers. ...P>. anti-social amoral acts suddenly redeemed by the greater good of stealing to a higher moral-ground for murder? hollow, evil heroes for the mindless and skin for the...nice formula. it's pulled in lots of 5 star ratings here so it seems to be exactly what audiences deserve.

Summary: You'll either love it or hate it
Review: Basically, you'll either love this one or hate it. It's amazingly simple, and it has no hidden meaning. Its precisely what it says it is: a movie about an ex-CIA spy who steals $9.5 billion from the government to fight terrorists. This isn't your standard action-thriller. Rather, its a mix of techno-thriller, action, and sex. Shortly after the beginning of the movie, the hero-hacker is forced to crack a difficult code while getting a blow-job, with a gun to his head, as a test of his abilities. Like I said, you'll either love it or hate it. It has enough interesting plot twists to separate it from typical action movies; but yet, its not complicated. You won't have to think for this movie. I will admit, I was very skeptical at first. I mean, John Travolta with a little thin-beard underneath his lips? That already seemed stupid. But I think you'll find it to be a good movie if you give it a chance.

Swordfish, is about a military leader, who is ruthless and callous and wants to take over the world. This man is named Gabriel Shear, played by masterful John Travolta. Hugh Jackman is his appointed assistant, with his amazing proficient skill and techniques he can earn him a great amount of money, about 9.5 billion to be precise. The operation is called Swordfish, deadly and chaotic and risky, Jackman's character named Stanley Jobson must do the inevitable and help this malevolent leader into getting what he wants. Halle Berry is Travolta's dear compassionate and benevolent lover, named Ginger. She's all over Stanley and she feels much content and gratification over him. Soon, she reveals a serious secret which Gabriel supposedly doesn't know about. The film features some acceptable and tolerable action, but lacks sophistication and intelligence. Shear is a deceitful and immoral character but he really knows how to cope with his enemies, he has numerous followers and supporters. He is deadly, malicous and noxious and will stop at nothing to coquer and overcome his rivals. Swordfish is rated R for Violence, Language and Some Sexulaity/Nudity. Not a very good choice for preteens or adolescent audiences. The film features loud, vociferous gunplay and explosions. The usual, obscenity and profanity and some explicit sexual situations which are demeaning as well as mortifying towards women. Think about this film. It was good and enjoyable, but not the best wotk of Dominic Sena, the director of Kalifornia and Gone in 60 Seconds. A standard and average action-thriller. Now Available to Own on Video and DVD.

Yeah ... it's true ... John Travolta really looks out of place and Halle Berry is obviously just paid eye-candy. On the positive side though, the script is tight and concise (even if it is a little predictible), Hugh Jackman is really pretty good, and there's a pretty good number of well-shot action scenes.
Sure, it's not exactly the next Citizen Kane, but it's certainly worth plunking down a few bucks to rent with a clear conscience....Lighten up a little bit guys...

Summary: Swordfish
Review: Directed by the master of flash-trash, Dominic Sena (GONE IN 60 SECONDS), the John Travolta action vechicle SWORDFISH is basically a sometimes impressive yet superficial cyber-thriller, done in the predictable Matrix-style action (Are there actually any recent action films out there that don't have the "flo-mo" gimmick?). Halle Berry gets her kit off, ho hum, semi-impressive action, yeah, yeah. Apart from a really awesome opener with big explosions, the rest has a "been there, done that" feel about it. It works well if you just want a dumb action flick, but it dosn't provide much more than expensive bangs and "cool" one-liners.
The DVD extras include feature-Length Commentaries, 2 Behind-the-Scenes Documentaries: The Making of "Swordfish" and The Effects in Focus, 2 Alternate Endings, Hidden Features and trailers. Good extras, but it dosn't cover the fact that the film itself is very sub-par. More discerning veiwers would be best to rent an old copy of Bullit.
