Summary: THE WORST DVD EVER
Review: this movie is just SCREAMING to be re-released on DVD. 2 sided disc? poor sound? it's been 6 years and they haven't touched it! I work in a retail store and we still get these old copies in for the price of a new release. Also, Warner Bros. uses nothing but snap cases. So if any of you work for Warner Bros. or knows someone who does tell them to WAKE UP AND GET WITH THE PROGRAM. To anyone new to dvds...if the back of the case does not say "dual layer" than BEWARE. This is how I learned. Good luck! Warner Bros. should be emabrassed by their lack of quality with dvds and packaging.

Summary: Unwatchable DVD of a great movie
Review: Get ready to ride the sound button on your remote. I don't know about the quality of the original sound mixing...that could be the culpret--but at the very least the sound mastering of this DVD in non-existant. It is impossible to enjoy this film in this format. Each scene requires you to reset the volume. It is completely unacceptable.

Summary: Great film, awful DVD
Review: Zero stars for the appallingly bad DVD (double sided???? I didn't even know such a thing existed until now). Others have covered this already, so I won't belabor the fact that the first side stops in the middle of the movie, never mind in the middle of a word, and you have to flip the disc to see the rest of the best gangster movie ever made (and I include the Godfather in that comment). Unforgivable.

Five stars + for the film. Stellar performances throughout. Although the great Robert De Niro is given top billing, it's really Ray Liotta who's the star, and I don't think he ever received the recognition he deserved for this terrific performance. Joe Pesci earned a well deserved Oscar for his part, Paul Sorvino is quietly terrifying as the local boss, and Lorraine Bracco comes very close to stealing the whole bowl of spaghetti from all of them. Keep an eye out for another Sopranos actor: Michael Imperioli plays a young wiseguy wannabe.

It's interesting to compare Scorsese's Goodfellas to his later and much inferior Casino. Even with the same screenwriter and several of the same cast, Casino can't begin to match the energy and inventiveness of the earlier film.

Let's hope somebody decides to give Goodfellas the kind of first class treatment it deserves.

Summary: 5 stars are for the film...but DVD deserves to lose a star.
Review: Goodfellas is one of the best movies of all time. This really isn't ever the question. Scorsese packs a whollop in this film that just can't be described adequately. Peschi's performance, while often lampooned, is still searing in it's psychotic roller-coaster ride. Liotta gives the most remarkable performance ever caught on film of the throes of drug-induced paranoia. Bracco, too, turns in a performance that is typical of her calibur and skillfully multi-faceted. The performances make this movie worth multiple watchings.

The DVD, however...is NOT worth your time. Originally released in 1997, the lack of extras, while annoying, can almost be overlooked. However, it's double sided, which means half-way through the film you have to stop and turn it over. It completely wrecks the flow of the film, not to mention is just annoying.

While you can't go wrong buying this DVD for the film, when it gets rereleased in an enhanced version (I'm sure it will although I have no firsthand knowledge of this. They can't leave a movie like this in the dust in the world of DVD, and it's DVD quality is just not there), that will be a definite must-have.

Summary: Actually 4 and a half but who's counting
Review: Wonderful movie, if you love the typical Gangster flixs then you should have already seen this! The movie is the story of a man joining the mafia and his 30 year stint living it up. The movie is great! Downsides, are that it is long. It often times seems even longer then it really is. I don't know why this is, I can't say it's boring, but it just feels really really long. Other downside, the last third of the movie. It doesn't fit with the rest of the movie. Near the end you start to have the feeling that you are watching something else that isn't bad but not near the quality film that you started.

Buy this movie, but expect the blood gore and cussing that goes along with these kind of movies.

Summary: Awesome movie...horrible DVD
Review: For those of you bad mouthing the DVD version of this film.. look at the DVD release date...

DVD Release Date: August 22, 1997

How many of you had even heard of DVD in 1997? This was an early release title. Non-Anamorphic and double sided flipper. That's the only way it could be done at the time. So don't whine about it. Currently it is still the best way to view the film (next to having your own print).

Let's just hope there will be a re-release that does the film justice on DVD and of course eventually in HD.

Summary: 1 star for the DVD, 5 stars for the movie
Review: Goodfellas is my all-time favorite movie. I could go on and on for days about all of the things that make this movie great. However, the DVD is a disgrace. You actually have to get up in the middle of it and flip it over to watch the rest of the movie! What is that ....?! That is what VHS is for. I was not so bothered by the lack of extra features as I was by this. I would recommend NOT buying Goodfellas on DVD until it is rereleased with it all on one DVD and maybe some extra footage and stuff with it. Geez, you would think a movie of this magnitude would have had more thought put into the DVD.

Summary: Awsome Movie...horrible DVD
Review: This is one of the greatest movies ever made. I used to watch this movie over and over again when I taped it off of HBO back in the day. The acting is great as is the cinematography and direction. You really get a good feel for all of the characters.

The bad thing is the DVD. This DVD for one does not have any worthwhile Special Features besides a couple of trailers, a couple of actor bio's and a few Production Notes. Where's the directors commentary? Where is the behind the scenes footage? I hope that perhaps they are planning on releasing a Specail Edition because this DVD does not do it justice. Also halfway through the movies you have to get up and flip it over to the other side. What up with that?

You could by the VHS for cheaper and not miss out on anything special.

As a movies its great, as a DVD I give it 1 star.

Here's hoping they come out with a better DVD version.
