Summary: An Amazing Film Experience
Review: Martin Scorsese is arguably the greatest American film director of the last twenty years. I have a hard time picking his best film: is it his depiction of the disturbed Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, Jack La Matta's rise to triumph and his fall from fame in Raging Bull or his picture of the Mafia between 1955 and 1985. This film is riveting. The actors all work great together (although I would have liked to have seen Robert Deniro a bit more!). As Roger Ebert said the film sweeps you through the film to the end where evrything just crashes and falls down. And, as Scorsese confirmed, the music is used very well to reflect the changing time periods. Roger Ebert was right to pick this film as one of the best of the decade.

Review: i don't really know what it is about this movie that i love so much. it doesn't make you think for hours on end about life and society, like many great movies. it doesn't have huge, intelligent plot twists. it doesn't move you very much or inspire tears. this leads me to believe that it's probably just the presentation and the realism. i guess it's just what the director is acclaimed for,... great directing. it's basically just a gritty, violent downward spiral of the main character and his friends. you end up even liking joe pesci's character, even thought he commits some horrible sins in the movie. in the end, though, it is a classic in my mind, and one i can watch again and again without tiring. go out and watch it now.

Summary: One of the worst movies I've ever seen
Review: I loved Cape Fear, I loved Casino. GoodFellas:Same actors,same director. GoodFellas: terrible. Why:This is up in my three leastfavorite movies of all time category. My other least favorites are:Office Space and Payback. It's so boring. I didn't care what happened to the characters. I didn't care if anyone got killed. I was so bored i almost cried. ... I hate having to watch a whole movie from the worst character's point of view. The main character of this started doing drugs near the end. His mind got all messed up. If you like maffia movies, see Casino. It's more exciting, dramatic, and watchable than Goodfellas.

Summary: Give The Director His Due
Review: I don't have much to say about this incredible film that hasn't already been said by the 100-plus reviews already posted, so just take it as read that this movie is truly one of the defining experiences of 90's (indeed, any era) cinema. I would like to point out, however, that Martin Scorsese has never recieved any recognition for his amazing contribution to American film by the Academy awards, and that this is a tragedy. It only serves to demonstrate how much of a joke the Oscars are, unworthy of any serious consideration. The man has at least three films to his name which deserved to take home best picture (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, & Goodfellas), and he has deserved Best Director just as many times. I'm sure he doesn't care that much - he knows that even Citizen Kane was overlooked when it first came out - but it must be frustrating to be ignored so consistently. It's simply not fair for this artist to have to wait until he's near death to finally be given some lame Lifetime Achievement award. Scorsese is the closest thing we have to an auteur in America.

Summary: How often does a movie actually speak to you?
Review: I remember the first time I actually sat down and watched Goodfellas. I was hooked within the first two minutes. Remember the scene when Henry 'roughs up' one of Karen's neighbors because he made a pass at her? I knew from that moment on, that I always had a desire to be a gangster. Not that I'd ever be one (besides, I'm not Sicilian), but even during all of the tough times they went through I remember thinking it just looked like they had fun as they did whatever they wanted.

By the end of the movie, you feel as if you really understand them. You feel as if you know why they didn't ever go straight (even with each other) after getting 'pinched'. You feel pity, as Henry Hill gives up his glorious lifestyle just to stay alive. And you feel in a way, he might as well be dead.

All of the cast was perfect, especially Joe Pesci (who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in this role). The soundtrack fits so well, sometimes you forget it's there--unlike newer films that drown out the sound with the latest pop single. The cinematography and directing is top notch (remember the no-camera-cut scene of the restaurant walk-through?).

You know how you put on some music just to have some background noise while you do something else? Sometimes I catch myself trying to put this on for background noise. It never works. I get to the cars blowing up and the 'Out of respect' line. Then, I settle into my couch and get ready to watch one of my favorite classic gangster movies.

Review: Come on. This is an American classic and it's not just for mob film fans. Joe Pesci in his finest performance. DeNiro is equally great. Most importantly though, is Ray Liota as Henry. You really feel his story. You feel his childhood fascination with the Wiseguys, you feel his rise in the Mob, and you feel his descent. And Scorsese's direction is unbelievable.

Summary: An essential piece to the puzzle...
Review: If you're a fan of mob flicks, you need this one. And Sopranos fans will love to see "Dr. Melfi," "Christopher," and "Paulie Walnuts" together in these early roles. The film is a born-classic with superb performances by Bracco, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Ray Liotta. 'Nuf said. The DVD picture is very good, and the sound excellent. The only drawback are the skimpy extras on the DVD: just the obligatory couple of trailers, bios, and production notes. I'd've like to have heard a commentary track or seen outtakes. Ah well - this is still a class act! Now go home and get your shinebox.

Review: Martin Scorsese's masterpiece Goodfellas is one of those movies ten years from now you will stil remember. Everything in this movie from actors to cinamatography to script to directing is done perfectly. This is a movie not to be missed!

Summary: Goodfellas v. Wiseguy
Review: This movie is a wonderful piece of work about the life of the Mafia in the 70s. Many of the scenes in the movie though, go unexplained. This is one of the biggest disappointments I had in the movie. First, I saw the movie. Then I read the book, and I must say, the movie follows the book VERY well, except that it doesn't explain many of the situations. My advice is that you read the book Wiseguy by Nick Pileggi first, then rent the movie and watch all the scenes come into play.
