Summary: Black Comedy at its Best!
Review: First off I HAVE to say, who cares if you have to flip the DVD to watch this INCREDIBLE movie. I was grateful to have my taped off of the television copy for a long time! And stop lessening the stars. This movie deserves a full 5 star rating no matter what the DVD plays like.

Anyway, moving on to the film. This is such a success I think because, well, to put it simply, there are no flaws. The incredible and perfect cast had an absolutely amazing script, and they were directed perfectly among other things that made this movie one of the best I've seen, and certainly the best mobster movie. Sorry Godfather (and part 2), but this one has it all. It shows the truth of the mob (which should really make you think) and includes comedy. So you see what their life is like. Not everything is drama all the time, not even in the mob! At the Oscars this movie was robbed and I feel horrible. At least Pesci won, thank god. I could rave for days about this movie, but I won't, just buy it and rave to as many people as you can about it. It's impossible not to!

Summary: 5 Star Movie, 2 Star DVD Release
Review: Not much can be written about this classic of the wiseguy genre that hasn't been written or said before. When I recently decided that it was time to begin building my DVD collection, there was no doubt in my mind that Goodfellas would hold a place of honor between "The Godfather DVD Collection" and "The Sopranos"; a thought that was sound in theory, but premature in execution.

This DVD release and its cheesy cardboard snap case could hardly hold a place on the [inexpensive] shelf at your local video store. The box said "Soundtrack Remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1", my ears said stereo.

Half way through the movie I found myself looking at the interactive menu. Puzzled, I popped out the DVD and looked for some defect that might have caused the DVD to return to the menu at this point. Upon brief inspection, I discovered that the disk is TWO SIDED! You watch half the movie, and then have to flip the darned thing over!

A film of this caliber deserves a much better DVD release. My recommendation: Don't buy this DVD release! Eventually somebody, somwhere, will get off the stick and issue a DVD release that is worthy of this film.

Summary: I am reviewing the DVD release
Review: Goodfellas is one of the best film of our times. A glorious masterpiece of a perfect screenplay, impeccable acting performances, and technical film mastery. It is sad to say then that the DVD release does not live up to the film. The first and most obvious flaw is that the film is divided into two sides on the Disc. How they ever got away with this is beyond my comprehension. In addition, the 5.1 surround sound is a hatchet job...with 'token' surround noises thrown in for a cheesy, gimmicky soundscape. I know this was an early DVD release and that some flaws are to be expected, but someone should really redo it and make a new release. After the fantastic job done on The Last Waltz, there is no excuse why a film of this magnitude has to be presented in this way...shameful !

Summary: One of The Best Mafia Movies Of All Time
Review: I can watch this movie over and over and never get tired of watching it. The fab four, "Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro, Paul Sorvino, and Ray Liotta" are spectacular in this drama. This is ONE movie you have to own if you love mafia movies. This movie is a classic and it is in my top 10 movies of all time.

Summary: This film deserves better . . .
Review: Yes, I agree with the other reviewers that this DVD leaves something to be desired. Much lesser films have been given the gift box treatment, and the 10th anniversary of this epic work came and went without so much as an upgrade with some extras. However, I cannot say enough about how much I love this film. I wish I could return to the autumn of 1990 and see it for the first time all over again. Such exquisite storytelling! Such compelling acting and brilliant dialogue! And what an OUTRAGE that it was not handed best film and best director oscars on a silver platter instead of a very good but very inferior "Dances With Wolves"! Deniro and Pesci deliver some of their best work ever, and all of the bit players who fill out the "crew" are just perfect. The settings - the cheesy nightclubs with the tacky decor, the even tackier Hill home in the 70s ("Watch the wall with the rock"), the music - you hear George Harrison's "What is Life" during the cocaine-fueled copter chase and it works - the frantic editing, all of it clicks perfectly. What's sad is the realization that Scorese will probably never be able to top it, though I have my fingers crossed. This is, to me, the best movie made in the last 20 years and surely one of the best ever made, and AFI should have placed it in the all-time top 10!

Summary: "Funny?.......Funny How!?"
Review: "Ever since I can remember I always wanted to be a gangster!" These are the words spoken by Henry Hill (Ray Liotta)! Hill started to work with the mob when he was a teenager and by the time he hit his 20's, he was 'part of a group' as he liked to call it. So begin's the adventure of Hill, even though it has some funny moments, even one's that seem like there heartwarming. But as quickly as they come, they go. The violent part of the life always takes over. Along for the ride is Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci's Oscar winning performance)! Tommy is a very quick tempered man, who uses anything around him to get what he wants or needs. Last but not least is Jimmy "The Gent" Conway (Robert De Niro) who is half Irish half Italian, just like Hill! These men although they run their own little business, answer to one man, that is Pauly (Paul Sorvino)! The man who runs the show. But Hill, DeVito and Conway all in all work for him taking over airports, night clubs. Anyone who needs protection but can't go to the cops. They come and see Pauly! Along the way Hill meets Karen (Lorraine Bracco in her Oscar Nominated role) who will be with him all the way. But along the way Hill gets into drugs and seals his own future. No one ever really showed an adict like Martin Scorsese does in this film, never sugar coating anything. This would be the role of a lifetime for both Liotta and Bracco! The film never really slows down, the character development is outstanding, as is the entire supporting cast. With a great director, cast, screenplay and cinematography this film is a sure winner. As always Robert De Niro proved to be a treat, but the real surprise was Joe Pesci! Who was and never has been better than he was in this film! If any film during the 1990's was robbed of the Oscar for Best Picture (other than Saving Private Ryan) it was this film! It should have won for Best Director and Best Picture, but it didn't! You have to see this film to understand everything that has been said about it! It ranks up there with "The Godfather" yet never use's anything from the film, making the choice for which is better, very hard. See "Goodfellas" and realize that it is Martin Scorsese's best film and one of the best ever made! An Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor(Pesci)! Don't miss it! Grade:A

Summary: Thank The Movie Gods For You, Scorsese!!
Review: There's only one word to describe this movie: MASTERPIECE!!
This movie is unbelievable in all its glitzy and gritty deliciousness. It stars Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Paul Sorvino, and Lorraine Bracco. Ray Liotta is the film's central figure as his narrative lets the audience in on the mafia life he had lived for nearly 30 years.
Robert De Niro plays veteran gangster Jimmy Conway. Although it is in some instances, a more 'quiet' role, De Niro delivers a characteristcally electrifying perfomanance. He's captivating. But for hard-core De Niro fans like myself, we expect nothing less from the master.
Joe Pesci's role as trigger happy gangster Tommy DeVito is awesome. He provides the black comedy that is present in the film as well as the extra boost of energy and star power. He's a mean force to reckon with. Pesci's Oscar for his work in this film was well-deserved. If he didn't win, they would have to answer this movie kingpin! :)
Paul Sorvino plays the kingpin Paulie whom Henry views as his adopted father. His performance is highly commendable. He has a quiet furiousity in his role.
Lorraine Bracco gives a 'pre-Sopranos' performance as Henry Hill's bedazzled wife, Karen. Her peformance is awesome and it definitely serves the movie well. She holds the intrigue that many feel when it comes to gangsters, so she's relatable.
All in all, folks, Scorsese, with his wonderful steadycam shots, soundtrack, beautifully realized characters, and overall flawless cinematography, has created a powerhouse film that's on AFI's top 100 Films of All Time list and a film that isn't easy, if at all, to forget.
Scorsese, you're a genius! Thank the Movie Gods for you!

Summary: One of the greatest!
Review: This is absolutly one of the best films that I have ever seen, and it is also one of my favorites. Every performance in this film is flawless. This film is perfect. One of the best gangster movies ever made! Martin Scorsese is a great director!

This film is a must-see, but is not for everyone. This film contains raw language, graphic violence, and drug use.
