Summary: So-so movie of a not bad play
Review: The cast is stellar, veterans like Maldan, Stapleton, etc do their best with material - a stagy play turned into a stagy film. That doesn't make it uninteresting - but you do feel it's a play. Claudia Draper is an interesting character and one has to connect with her, thru Streisand. As a huge Streisand fan, my one wishes of her was to tackle a character role. Well, Claudia is that kind of role - but it brings also mixed feelings as what Streisand brings to a role. Streisand's charisma is always there, but one feels Claudia is put aside a bit. As the highly priced hooker, we have to stretch imagination a bit, believing it is Streisand. One could, if Barbra would totally emerge into the role. But she plays it both ways: moments she is Claudia, moments not at all -and then she'll always show how hard she is working to convince you - that she's Streisand most of all. Barbra could be great if she'd let go of her ego....

Summary: CAPTIVATING PERFORMANCES OVERSHADOW SOMEWHAT CLICHED PLOT
Review: The movie is almost solely carried by Barbara Streisand's scorching performance as a high class hooker wrongly accused of first degree manslaughter. The courtroom scenes are fascinating, and if you love fast witty banter, this is a delight. The subject is weighty (a couple of rants toward the end are also a bit predictably feminist) but thought-provoking, and its rendition into the dramatic screenplay is very, very satisfying. Highly recommended for the discerning viewer.

Summary: One of the best
Review: The stars were at their top performance especially Barbara. This video touched my heart and my life, and it would almost any woman who had gone through what the leading lady did.

Summary: The lack of reviews is nuts
Review: There are no official reviews from any of the entities normally reviewing this film. The few customer reviews are right on the mark. I have never seen the play so I can not comment on it. The movie however holds your attention. Barbra Streisand is not the only actor in this movie to let their personality overwhelm the character. Richard Dreyfuss, "Moon Over Parador (1988) ASIN: 155880031X " lets his personality and mannerisms through pretty well. And towards the end of the movie do I hear an Ayn Rand type courtroom speech about competence?

Summary: Barbra in Jail! We should be so lucky...
Review: There's only one word for this movie: MENT

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Entertaining, but only fair
Review: This film has its flaws, and the other reviewers, especially some, are right on track with that, but it's flaws do not overshadow the strength of the subject matter of the film, and it's ability to give a visible portrayal into the severe dysfunctions of this family. The film had some shocking surprises, just loaded with intence emotional drama, and it kept my attention for sure -- and it all seemed very very real.
I have seen it many times, and remembered it as this outstanding for many years.

Isn't that how you want a film to be?

Summary: Barbra was "NUTS" when she signed on with this turkey!
Review: This film was a big disappointment to me, a big Barbra Streisand fan. Streisand may be convincing as a woman tormented by bottled-up childhood nightmares, but the story takes endless detours through gratuitous prophanity and plot twists. The "shocking" ending was predictable and unsatisfying. If you are looking for a good psycho-drama, do yourself a favor and keep looking!

Summary: based on a true story
Review: This film was based on a true story! A lot of people didn't like this movie because of the ending or because of some part in the movie. I think they should consider the fact that they acted out what was real, the movie ended that way because that's how it ended in real life. Give Barbara a break! I think she performed great! She did her job, and that is part of being a good actress. So what if she used profanity and acted out rationally, that was her character and she played it very well in my opinion. We watched this film in my forensic psychology class to learn more about "competence to stand trial". Everyone loved it. It kept our attention and was interesting to a bunch of college students and trust me it takes a lot to gain the attention of most college students. We all loved this film. I didn't give it a 5 because I am very much a movie critic and a 5 would be outstanding coming from me. I gave it a strong 3 because I thought it was appropriate and come on the movie came out when I was 7 years old. I thought it was great for an older film. Thank you

Summary: One of the best movies I have ever seen
Review: This movie is absolutely breathtaking. I cried like, five times in it. People who have only rated this as one star are entitled to their opinion, but I mean, this is a movie that is too breathtaking for words. I think everyone should have it, because it touches everyone. Barbra Streisand is one of the best actresses I have ever seen. Wow, just wow!
