Summary: Mickey Rourke and Eric Roberts Never Better
Review: Perhaps one of the most overlooked, underappreciated movies of all times, especially if you have any ties to New York City. The story is more than meets the eye, dealing with social class and heriarchy and the human desire for betterment. Contains the greatness that was Mickey Rourke and was Eric Roberts (what happend to these guys). Certain scenes with send chills up your spine. Above all else is the humour. If you don't get it, you don't get it and there is nothing that can be done. But if you get it, it will leave you with lines you will be repeating for the rest of your life.

Summary: An overlooked gem
Review: Released at a time when comedies were measured by the number of exposed women's breasts or the quality of vomiting scenes, THE POPE OF GREENWICH VILLAGE was a refreshing movie that had actual character development and humor based on wit, not bodily functions. Paulie and Charlie (Rourke and Roberts) play two citizens of Little Italy that are on the criminal fringe, although they themselves are not criminals. But as they look around them, the criminals of the street are getting richer and the yuppies of the 80s even richer than that. When they are approached by Barney, a locksmith losing his sight (wonderfully portrayed by Kenneth McMillan) who has a plan for a quick score, the two fall in. Once they do, the pasta goes flying.I won't go further into the plot. There are some great supporting performances here: Geraldine Page, Burt Young, Tony Musante, Phillip Bosco, and even Daryl Hannah. The direction is top notch. Check out this little period piece of a neighborhood that is rapidly disappearing.

Review: The best Rourke movie I've ever seen,thanks to the great director. Outstanding supporting cast. Nostalgic look at New York, great sense of humour, excellent work by Roberts. I strongly recommend it.

Summary: Just Great !
Review: The kind of movie you can see over and over - awesome character development and engaging dramatic situations. Well acted (yes - with Rourke and Roberts) and superbly accessorized (Sinatra and all). An unforgettable movie - 16 years after seeing it, this (along with 'Short Cuts' and 'Once Upon a Time in America') is the DVD I have been most waiting for.

Summary: Outstanding!
Review: There are many things that boggle me about Hollywood films. Foremost among them being the way this masterpiece has fallen through the cracks among film fans. It contains some of the most emotionally powerful acting since On The Waterfront. The performances of the relationship between Eric Roberts & Mickey Rourke are absolutely extraordinary and in my opinion eclipse anything done in the last 50 years.
So why have Keitel & DeNiro become the gods of moviedom while Roberts & Rourke have been relegated to obscurity? I don't buy the view of at least one other reviewer here that it's about behavior & appearance. I think it's about the mainstream movie audience's affinity for schtick that's easy to understand & mimic vs. the depth & complexity conveyed by the leads of Pope Of Greenwich Village.
That other quality that makes this film stand out for me is the sheer intensity of its New York City ambience. Not for naught was director Stuart Rosenberg responsible for some of 1960s TV's gritiest & greatest NYC-based series in particular Naked City.
Just a fabulous flick!

Review: This is a classic sleeper that does not get the credit that it deserves. Eric Roberts should have been nominated for an award on this one. The DVD quality brings this classic street story to life again.

Review: This is a good movie made great by the Oscar nominated performance of Geraldine Page. Miss Page is in the movie about 10 minutes and simply steals the show. The scene with the Interal Affairs detectives is extraordinary! You can't take your eyes off her!

Summary: A great blend of characters.
Review: This is proably one of Rourke's two best films (with Angel Heart being the other). It is certainly Eric Roberts' best film. Rourke's struggle to distance himself from his cousin (Roberts) is so strong, you just want to grab Roberts and knock some sense into him. Geraldine Page is exceptional in a brief appearance, and Burt Young as the "Bedbug" (as in crazy as a....) is one of many interesting characters. A strong message of the consequences of playing with the "big guys" and their money.

Summary: one of the best mob flicks
Review: This movie is chock full of stars. The one who is amazing is Tony Musante, Paulie's uncle. Take a look at a 1967 flick called the incident and he will show you what method acting is all about. His character in that flick is better than any in "the POPE" not to put down "the POPE" of course. Too bad they gave him this small role, cauz he was the original bad boy. Anyway, the pope is awesome, Roberts and Rourke are incedible and the flick is a classic. DONT FORGET MUSANTE IN THE INCIDENT.
