Summary: Review by English LK, Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium Göttingen
Review: The movie Death Man Walking is definitely worth to be seen. Overall the movie presents a neutral point of view by dealing with both sides, the victim's and the murderer's one. The movie has not been made to convince people to switch sides, whether they are pro or contra death penalty, but it makes you thoughtful about your own opinion.

Summary: Religous movie
Review: I think the movie is alright. But I did not watch the whole movie.
I think that the movie was well made. I like that it is a religous movie, because I am religous, too. But for those who are not religous, the movie might be to be exaggerated.
I also liked that it showed both sides. Matt's sight and the victim's parents sight.
I liked sister Helen's role in this movie. She had a very interesting role and the way she dealed with this situation was goos, because it was very problematic.
But I really have to say that I would not watch the movie by myself if we didnßt watch it in school. Although it was well made I do not like that kind of movies. But this is my personal opinion.

Summary: ooooooooohhhhhhhh boring
Review: I saw this movie in my English class as we discussed the pro and con of Capital Punishment. I would never have watched this by myself and I have to say, I wish I hadn't. It is not that I think that the movie is too didactic, I simply don't like films in which the director and the actors obviously try to stimulate certain emotions. I watched the movie thinking: Now I should feel sad, now I should feel sorry, now I should hate Matt... But I didn't really feel one of these feelings at all! the movie is just so artificial, everything seems to be a cliché, nothing is new or interesting, although the director tried to produce tension, I was bored many times. You could say that I am cold and that I do not allow the movie to touch me but I am not against emotional movies at all. If you want to watch a movie bout the death penalty, watch the Green Mile. If you want a movie that is moving and brillant at the same time, watch "the Rainman" (my favourite "sad" movie), but you really don't have to see "dead Man walking".

Summary: Opinion on Dead Man Walking
Review: I really enjoyed "Dead Man Walking" because it shows the murderers point of view as well as the victims` families` sides.
It gives a good impression about the suffering of everyone who is concerned in cases of the death penalty.
In the end of the film the stress is too much on the emotional base and serious arguments for or against Matt`s execution are left out.
But all in all I could imagine that this film really could change people´s minds about Capital Punishment.

Summary: Nice story but not well done
Review: I did not like the movie really. It is filled with many feelings and impressions and is many sided but I think it is not so close to the reality although it tried to show the truth.
The movie was a bit too religious and Matthew Poncelet's part was not well presented by Sean Penn. He acted more like an actor and not like a guilty man who denies having comitted the murder.
To put it in a nutshell I would say that the story and the idea is great but it is not very well done.

I would recommend this movie to others because it shows the different angles and views of the people very well although I did not like the movie.

Summary: Englisch LK OHG Goettingen - Dead Man Walking Review
Review: I watched this movie in my English class (12th grade). It is a very emotional movie - sometimes a little too emotional but in general you can say that it reaches the audience. What I like is that everyone will think about the movie after watching it regardless of his opinion about the death penalty. Dead Man Walking definitely sticks to your memory.
By using flashbacks throughout the movie, Tim Robbins created a movie that is shifting between reality, imagination and the past history of the plot. The flashbacks are very well used to show the thoughts and impressions that Sister Helen has about Matt. Matthew Poncelet is like a puzzle - the more you see of him during the movie the clearer becomes the image of his character. However, it is left to the viewer whether it comes out to a positive or negative image.
This movie is unique because it shows another kind of 'hero' than the usual brutal heroes that are presented in every other Hollywood movie.
However, there are a few points to critisize about it:
First of all the story is a little bit overloaded with religious elements - especially in the end. This is kind of a black-and-white portrayal of the fact that religion or christianity is the only way to receive redemption.
Another point of criticism are the rather heavy accents of the protagonist that made it almost imposible to understand the movie just by listening to the dialogs. However, I don't want to blame the movie for it - at least not entirely since my problems in understanding could also be a result of my personal inability. ;-)
All in all I recommend this movie since it is extremely famous and you must have seen it!!

Summary: The film made us contemplate
Review: I liked the film because it tried to be neutral with the death penalty. It presented a murderer with unexpectable feelings and a family background who also suffered from the crime. I could sympathize with the poor Matthew Poncelet but Tim Robbins showed the hard reality of the victim's parents in order to feel sorry for them, too. In the end I didn't know what to feel. Feel sorry for Matt, for Lucille (Matts mom), for the Delacroixs and the Percys?? The film raised the question/made us contemplate if the death penalty solves every problem!!

Summary: Was does reality have to do with it?
Review: This movie makes a mockery of the crimes it based its
screen play upon. Gee, we never did see a young woman
grabbed from the street as she was walking home, now did we?
The easily guided, less than intelligent youth, given the sentence of the electric chair? It didn't happen. But what does reality have to do with it? As all Christians, I pray that
Ms. Prejean will remember that pride is the sin of angels,
as do we all.

Summary: An Extremely Thought-Provoking Film
Review: In addition to the acting performances, this film's excellence resides in the way it makes you contemplate the death penalty from both points of view. The shifts between the crime scene, the perpetrator, and the nun's explorations of the scenario propagate attitude changes with every new scene. You can see the horrible crime that was committed, and then you're made to consider the fact that further death -- executing the murderer -- will not really solve anything... and then, you sense the victim's family's desire to see their daughter's killer punished completely. I was a against the death penalty until a friend of mine was needlessly killed by two guys leaving a robbery scene -- my friend's death was such an unnecessary waste, that I wanted the two killers to be exterminated. "Dead Man Walking" provides similar changes of perspective -- it may change the opinion you presently hold, regardless of whether you're for or against capital punishment. It's a great movie to watch, and then to think about, to contemplate as deeply as you can.

Summary: BRILLIANT MOVIE
Review: You will NEVER forget this movie. As he proved in Mystic River, Sean Penn is an amazing actor and this movie wouldn't be the same without him. I think he should have gotten an Oscar for his performance in this.

Dead Man Walking is about a nun (Susan Surandon) who receives a letter from a man, Matthew Poncelet, (Sean Penn) on death row. He asks her to come visit him, and they get to know eachother. At first the nun tries to help him prove his innocence, but when that fails she turns to helping him accept Christ and prepairing him for his execution.

This film is so moving, it will bring tears to your eyes and will make you re-think your opinion of the death penalty. An absolute MUST SEE!!
