Summary: ELLEN ELLEN ELLEN !
Review: Have I already told you that Ellen Barkin is my all-time favorite actress ? No ? O.K. It's done now. One of her most brilliant role was her part in THE BIG EASY directed by Jim McBride. She plays a New Orleans district attorney investigating corruption among city cops.

How will she be able to persuade those cops that accepting 50 $ from a bar tender is as illegal than dealing drugs. Specially when these cops do a pretty good job by keeping the city clean. It's merely an affair of morale. The problem is that these cops consider their little paychecks as perfectly normal. And they don't feel guilty at all. Hard job for Ellen.

The cajun atmosphere is perfectly described by Jim McBride who is a master, since BREATHLESS, in the treatment of the colours. The ending of the movie is a masterpiece, McBride transforming an orange and yellow explosion in a sumptuous black and white image as pure as the justice and the morale.

THE BIG EASY is one of the best films noir of the eighties and his arrival on DVD was the most agreeable surprise of the beginning of 1999.

A DVD for El.. Nope ! for me.

Summary: Steamy And Spicy!
Review: This is a terrifically original crime caper. Dennis Quaid gives his best performance as a corrupt but well-meaning cop. The underrated and extremely talented Ellen Barkin is also dynamite as the uptight DA assistant. The chemistry by Quaid and Barkin can light the screen on fire and they create on of the most attractive couples in movies. The plot is good, but it is the romance and comedy that leave the impact. Hilarious at times, great Cajun soundtrack. Good supporting cast with Ned Beatty and John Goodman as stand-outs. A Very good time. From a scale of 1-10 I give this film an 8!

Summary: that accent needs to go
Review: While the story of this film holds interest, there are some serious problems. One is Dennis Quaid's accent. One would be hard pressed to find that kind of Cajun accent in New Orleans (especially given that the impression is horrible.) Unintentionally, Quaid's accent suggests that all of Louisiana is one big Cajun swamp, which is fundamentally untrue. One aspect the film gets startingly right is that unfathomable corruption of the New Orleans Police Department. Anyone who's familiar with the real cases of Len Davis or Antoinette Frank knows the N.O. Police Department has sunk to depths of corruption and degardation heretofore unseen in modern law enforcement. This film gives the novice a nice tease of how things are done in N.O.

Summary: Excellent entertainment
Review: Right from the start you know you're in New Orleans, with the lively music, the humor, the partying and the sweet smell of corruption and death. The movie's love theme is cleverly handled (a bit like Ellen Barkin handles the cop's younger brother), and I would place a small bet that this was the first movie ever to poke fun at women joggers. Top-rate.

Summary: Glad Big Easy has come to DVD
Review: The Big Easy is one of my favorite movies. It has a rich mix of savvy, original characters, including New Orleans itself. This is Ellen Barkin's best performance as the inhibited DA Anne Osborn being drawn out by the mildly corrupt detective played by Dennis Quaid. Chemistry, snappy dialog, good tunes, whimsical romancing: who could ask for more?

The DVD is not technically exceptional or even particularly good, which is a shame but not crippling in a character driven story.

Summary: Sexy to the core
Review: Quaid and Barkin steam up the screen with the spice of crayfish jumbalaya. Great flick that I never tire of watching.

Summary: Good movie, but....
Review: I was hoping to enjoy the great Cajun soundtrack. We kept trying to figure out what was wrong with the sound. We finally checked the box and found out that they released the DVD in mono! Unbelievable. It's still a movie that's worth a look; but, don't expect much in the audio department. The story is sexy and romantic, and Dennis Quaid does a great job! I gave this movie four stars for the content. If it had been in stereo, I would have given it five stars.

Summary: New Orleans on the Half-Shell
Review: One of the few movies every shot in New Orlenas that captures the look, the mood and the spirit of New Orleans. Because the city is portrayed honestly, it becomes as compelling a performer as Quiad and Barkin (and the often-overlooked gem of a performance by Ned Beatty). Laissez les bon film rouler!

Summary: Great soundtrack wasted!
Review: Since it had been quite a few years since viewing The Big Easy, I could not remember the story to well. What I could remember though was what a great cajun soundtrack this movie has. When I purchased this DVD I did not pay attention to the soundtrack presentation since I was looking forward to the movie. When arriving home I inspected the box further to notice the movie was presented in mono. The Big Easy was released in 1986 not 1936! How Trimark could not release this movie in at least a pro logic format is beyond me. The story is still a good one. It is just to bad the best aspect of the movie is wasted. BT
