Rating: Summary: just buy it, brilliant film without explosions Review: If everyone else is going to give this 5 out of 5 then who am i to argue? (as i have the film on VHS wide and DVD anyway!)
Rating: Summary: One of the best movies EVER!!! Review: I have "experienced" this movie about 10 times on VHS, and I laugh, cry and fall more in love with this movie with every viewing. While some movies lack in certain catagories, Shawshank Redemption is perfectly written and directed, the casting is perfect, the acting is perfect, the cinematography is perfect and any other catagory I am forgetting is perfect. Ask anyone who has seen the movie, and the worst response you will ever get is "that was a very good movie!"Now I know Loenard Maltin is a complete moron! If ANY of the movie was cut out, you would not fully enjoy every hidden meaning. Believe me, If a movie EVER wrapped up in a perfect ball, this would be it! I have over 100 DVD's in my collection, and my collection is nothing without Shawshank Redemption (or Braveheart for that matter)! I am going to pre-order now and hope that this is not just another damn rumor! ;o) Do yourself a favor, and go rent it now and buy it later so you can watch it whenever you want to smile from head to toe!
Rating: Summary: I love this film! Review: This movie is one of my personal favorites. Everything about it is superb. It has a message to tell it's audience. The message I got was that prison life can take over your mind, body and soul. Some prisoners that are incarcerated for several years never recover from their experience. A perfect example of this was when Red got out of prison and also the old man who nurtured a black bird. Andy Dufrane though never let prison get the best out of him. I loved how he outsmarted the warden at the end. The ultimate revenge. This is one of my top-ten favorite films. Others films I admire are 1492:Conquest Of Paradise, Leaving Las Vegas, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, 2001: A Space Odessy, Metro, Planes,Trains & Automobiles, The Big Lebowski, Starman and ET: The Extraterrestrial.
Rating: Summary: GREAT MOVIE!!! Review: Ok, so this isn't the typical Stephen King type movie. Not really scarey, but maybe that is what makes it one of my favorite movies. I've seen Shawshank already so many times i lost count. If you like drama films and like Stephen King you have to see this!!
Rating: Summary: Great movie - They are selling it at Amazon! Review: I agree with the previous comments, Shawshank was a movie that deserves much praise. I for one rank Tim Robins as well as Morgan Freeman in my Top 10 List of best actors and this movie is a big reason why. And yet there were no Asteroids or Aliens trying to conquer the world and no amazing special effects to dazzel you, I wonder why it is so good... Could it be the brilliant yet simplistic plot and deep characters? It appears (cross your fingers) that it will be out on DVD on June 16 according to Amazon. I hope this is true.
Rating: Summary: Leonard Maltin is wrong Review: The movie was one of the greatest I've ever seen. Leonard Maltin doesn't know what he's talking about when he calls it "overlong" and hollow, and predictable. Sometimes it seems if a movie doesn't have French subtitles, it doesn't get the respect it deserves.
Rating: Summary: THE GREATEST Review: It is the best film of the 90's. The story, acting, it has it all and more.
Rating: Summary: A MODERN MASTERPIECE Review: You really cannot praise a film of this quality highly enough. In terms of sensitivity, compassion and real friendship I find it hard to believe any director will better a film like this. What Darabont achieves through Freeman's poetic narration and feelings is a production of superlative beauty, realism and effect. The language is, for the purpose it sets out to achieve, perfection and despite reviews to the contrary the slow pace and long length of the film only adds to the uplifting feeling it brings to you at its finale. Robbins and Freeman working in tandem is a joy to behold as are the performances by Brown and Gunton and the scene where Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro" is broadcast to these culture censored convicts by Robbins again brings a lump to the throat. Where Darabont trully succeeds however is in creating a prison drama, often containing brutality, that evokes real sympathy, passion and tranquility. Alongside the heart wrenching music Darabont allows even the more unactive periods of the film to fly by as you are hypnotised in your interest for the characters and their well being. Comprising the near perfect acting of the main cast and the sequences that leads to its conclusion, which can be traced back to the very beginning, this for me personally is the greatest film of the 90's, if not of all time. Often it seems that a film produced after 1980 cannot ever be classed as one of the greatest as it lacks the ever remembered talented proffesionals that were around in the 50's and 60's, however that would be an injustice to this epic. Mr Maltin, and other critics should not worry those who appreciate this films true quality, they seem to have missed its overall aim - to encompass beauty and friendship in the surroundings of such evil. Yes, there does exist the odd minor plot hole (which the hyper-critical, in desperation to fault, often point out), but that should not be of importance when you view a film of this style and magnitude. I just hope Darabont's next two productions, "The Green Mile" and "The Bijou" are to this high standard, although to be honest it is one hard act to follow. This film is already, and will eventually, earn the recognition it deserves. It is indeed a modern masterpiece.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely one of the best movies of our time. Review: Each time I watch this film, I discover even more meaning. Based on "The Wrong Man" thesis, this work is artful, poetic (especially Redd's narrative), poignant, and riveting. It will undoubedly move you and leave you with a victorious feeling.
Rating: Summary: Flawless Review: Essentially the entire movie is devoted to character building, so that by the end of the movie you have totally bought into each and every character. I am an extremely critical, anal-retentive German-American, and I can say without hesitation that this film was one of- if not the- most perfectly made films ever. It is VERY easy to watch this film time and time again. An excellent piece of work. Again, flawless.
