Summary: Big Man Makes HUGE Movie!
Review: In the first fifteen minutes of "The Green Mile" it is very obvious that it's a great movie. When Michael Clarke Duncan (John Coffey) first sets foot on the mile, not only are you amazed, but you are drawn into this movie. Tom Hanks also puts on another amazing performance (gee--that's weird). But the supporting cast and fantasy also help to make this movie a must see.

Summary: This is what DVD is for!
Review: I hope that the DVD format allows more films like GREEN MILE to be made. The film's length (3 hours) and its slow pace are problems. However, the DVD format made it very convenient to break the film into shorter installments to watch over time. That's good because I don't see how it could have been shorter without wrecking it. I haven't read the book (by Stephen King) but I understand that this film is supposed to be quite faithful to it and that the length was necessary to accomplish that. Book adaptation issues aside, the slow pace allows the viewer to inhabit the world in which the action takes place. For me, that was one of the film's greatest strengths. Another problem is that some might have trouble buying the world it creates. The film depicts a 1930's Louisiana death row. The guards are (with one glaring exception) very decent men who tend the inmates with great kindness and respect. They also execute them with similar kindness and respect. The inmates, meanwhile, (once again with one glaring exception) seem decent- ordinary men who perhaps made serious mistakes along the way. They go to their deaths with dignity and resignation. No one seems to question the justice of all this. It's simply the order of the world, apparently. That it seems plausible at all owes much to the flawlessly cast ensemble of actors (of which Tom Hanks is just one member and includes, among its standouts, David Morse and Michael Jeter). It also owes a great deal to the skilled visual design which makes the prison environment seem physically real. However, for those who can't accept the curious mix of idealism and realism that makes up this film's universe, the time spent there won't make sense. Also, the last portion of the film often doesn't measure up to the earlier parts, perhaps because it's difficult to bring the kind of issues raised here to a conclusion without seeming too pat. Still, this film doesn't pull every punch. For example, there are several graphic depictions of death in the electric chair. Conflict develops when a condemned inmate (Michael Clark Duncan in an Oscar nominated performance) appears to be not only innocent but a saint with miraculous healing powers. Ultimately this causes one guard to ask regarding this man's imminent execution: "What I am going to say [to God] on the day of my judgment? That it was my job?" This thoughtful, haunting film is not naive by any means. Author King and writer-director Frank Darabont seem fully aware of the troubling paradoxes they are posing about life, death, justice, mercy, punishment, compassion, good and evil. Here, even the best intentioned people can be complicit in hurtful things and ultimately compassion itself can prove a withering burden in a world so full of pain. If you find this film has resonance for you, it's a good choice to own on DVD because it works best if you can linger over it.

Summary: One Of The Best Of All Time
Review: The movie dazzles in every way. A great story and a great meaning of life. There are miracles that many people can't explain. This movie is sad and happy. Tom Hanks plays a great part and I think he should have been nominated at the Academy Awards for best actor. This is Tom Hanks best movie in my opinion. Among the others between Forrest Gump and Saving Private Ryan. One of the best movies of all time.

Review: I loved this movie! I saw it w/ my cousin on my vacation. I wasn't so sure I was gonna love it as much as I did! It has everything! It makes you feel all different kinds of feelings! All the actors did a GREAT job! I think it was stunning how good Michael Clarke Duncan was! I had seen him in a few other movies, but this was his best performance so far! I wish he would have gotten the oscar. I hope to continue seeing him. Tom Hanks just seems to get better every time. He had so many feelings for Duncan the two of them worked great together. So did the rest of the guards too. EVeryone did a fantastic job! The plot is equally as good. The conflicts get bigger and bigger & the plot just keeps adding up to create a masterpiece.

Summary: This Movie Rocks!
Review: This movie was one of the best of the year. It lead you through all the range of human emotion. From Laughter to anger , to hatred , and finaly heart break. It gets better with each time you see it. my eyes still get watery when I think about the movie. Micheal Clark Duncan does justice to the role of John Coffee.

Summary: Splendid movie adaptation
Review: I read the serial novel before I saw this movie, and I have to say that they did an excellent job converting the book into a movie. Not everything follows the book exactly, but it was near enough that I had nothing to complain about. In fact, the movie slightly changed some things about the novel that I didn't really care about that much. The fact that the novel was published in serial form had King going back to Paul as an old man between each part to continue the flow of the book, and to keep the reader aware of what was going on. Since the movie had a continual flow of its own, it didn't require this device so they left it out, which I deeply enjoyed. The novel had another Percy like character working at the old age home Paul resided at, and I didn't really feel he was necessary for the story I was being told, so I'm glad the movie kept that part out. The actors all did a magnificent job also. After seeing Tom Hanks in the role of Paul Edgecomb, I couldn't imagine anyone else playing the part to such perfection. Duncan did an excellent job as Coffey, infusing the character with the proper touch of wonder, sadness, and his sense of isolation from the world. Everyone did a good job, right down to the dozen or so mice they had that portrayed Mr. Jingle, an excellent job there. The effects were outstanding too, from the executions, including the one that one so horrifyingly wrong, the various miracles performed by Coffey, to the effect of him coughing out the clouds of disease that he had taken back(as he puts it) from each person he heals. An outstanding job there, I just wish they had had more on the DVD about how the effects were done, or maybe a commentary by the director. Finally, I really enjoyed the wrap up at the end of the movie, the punishment Paul feels he's serving for having killed one of God's true miracles. And it's true, we all are walking our own green mile, and we never know when it's going to end.

Review: Next to Hanks' "Saving Private Ryan," I would have to rate "The Green Mile" as my second-favorite movie of all time. If you are not a fan of Tom Hanks before you see this movie, you will be by the end of it. The surrounding cast is incredible and makes the movie a must for anyone's collection.

Summary: EXCELLENT!
Review: This movie is the best book to film adaptation I have ever seen. Thi book is not "Based on the novel by Stephen King." It follows the book nearly to perfection, with a few minor parts altered. The casting was beautiful. I absolutely loved it. I would recommend this movie to anyone over 13 (It does have violence and occasional obscene language) Bravo for Frank Darabont. May he keep churning them out. I'll watch them. Will YOU?

Summary: One of the Best Addaptations of Stephen King's Works
Review: The movie, The Green Mile, based on the seriel story by Stephen King, was one of the best adaptations of his work I've ever seen. The movie moved along at a steady pace and pulled you into the story without grabing you by the throat. All the characters were well acted and believeable. And even at just over three hours in leangth, the movie was so well made that you didn't notice that the movie was that long. Other things about the story gave you a sense of good feeling over all, let you cry a little when John Cofey died, and a smile on your face at the film's end. The Green Mile is definately a five star film and one of the best of 1999.
