Rating: Summary: One of the best I've ever seen Review: I don't understand first of all why people try to compare this movie to The Shawshank Redemption. Just because they have the same writers, etc. and somewhat the same theme does not in my opinion make for obivous comparison. They are totally different films with different totally different objectives. Furthermore, who defines what is long for a movie? Sure, we are used to our approx. 90 minute films or even 120 minute films, but this film never once, was boring or uneventful. I don't think it could have been any shorter than it was. I bought it last week and have watched it twice, something I rarely do with a 3 hour movie. The performances were incredible. Tom Hanks shines in everything I've ever seen him in and this film was no exception. I too was tired of seeing stereotyped prison guards and prison inmates and this movie really crept into the very soul of the viewer. I thought the supporting cast was wonderful. I thought the story was wonderful and a big magical which carried the audience every single minute. I don't think it was all that predictable and until I read someone's review below didn't think it "obviously" borrowed any story line from the bible; although I guess when you sit and pick it apart, you see the comparisons. I laughed, I cried, I got angry, I felt scared and comforted all within the 3 hours that I sat glued to the screen. Not many movies provoke so many emotions in one setting. I think this is perhaps one of the best movies I have ever seen and I feel Tom Hanks gets better and better with age. Again, the supporting cast was wonderful and well-casted. I find it hard to believe that there were viewers who were not entertained by this film. It is well worth the purchase price and a movie that I intend to watch over and over. In my opinion it rates right up there with The Shawshank Redemption which is another of my favorite movies but I don't intend to get the two confused with each other.
Rating: Summary: A new Classic Review: Want to see a movie classic in the making? Watch this movie. It's simply outstanding. Very entertaining and excellent acting. Spellbinding story line. Yes, it's a long movie, but like Titanic, you don't mind the time because the story and acting is so good.
Rating: Summary: A TRIUMPH OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT! Review: If this film had not come out, everyone, and, I mena, EVERYONE, would be missing something. This film, based on the Stephen King bestseller, is Frank Darabont's best film along with THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, Barry Pepper, James Cromwell, Bonnie Hunt, Gary Sinise, and many other fine and talented stars headline this masterpiece. At first, I thought this film would be a flop. But, thanks to word of mouth, the film grossed $136 Million domestically. I personally think it should have done better than that. This, along with SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, is Tom Hanks' best performance. The visual effects, although there aren't many, are dazzling. The relationships between the the actors is at times sad, and at times funny. The mix of comedy, drama, fantasy, and mouse hunting make it a film that certainly deserves to be on every movie fan's top ten list of all time best movies. For a three hour movie with no very exciting moments, it is really fast paced. The ending, although quite sad, is still a happy one. Everybody who loves GREAT movies should see this. Trust me, it will make your day. Bravo, Tom Hanks!
Rating: Summary: I love this movie Review: I loved this movie. I thought Michael Clarke Duncan MADE this movie what it is. It has been one of my favorites this year. With a great cast(Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan) you cant go wrong. Next time im getting a new DVD this will be the one!
Rating: Summary: Highly dramatic, fully emotional, absolutely faithful. Review: Paul Edgecomb, head prison guard in the death-row cellblock of the Cold Mountain Penitentiary, didn't believe in miracles until a humongous inmate with a humongous heart walks down what is known as The Green Mile to his cell. John Coffey is a black man convicted of killing two small girls, though it seems strange to Edgecomb as well as everyone else that he could be capable of such a ghastly crime. From this point on, strange things begin happening, things that benefit those in trouble or in pain. It is soon revealed that John Coffey has a gift for healing those in pain, whether physical or emotional, and this revelation leads to an unexpected discovery about the truth about the facts of the crime, and a twist that will leave you breathless. From the director of "The Shawshank Redemption" comes "The Green Mile," a highly emotional and moving epic film that takes us back to a place in time where racial inequality affected every aspect of American government and life. Tom Hanks plays Paul Edgecomb, the prison guard whose intrigue for John Coffey's past leads him to learn of his extraordinary power to heal those in pain. Michael Clarke Duncan gives an uncanny performance as the extremely friendly and soft-hearted John Coffey, whose bitterness and anger aim only at the injustice and prejudices of the world outside. Everything in this movie is perfectly rounded, created so that in the end, everything ties up together in a glorious package of revelations and truths about life. On another high note, the film remains ever-so true to the novel, remaining one of the finer book-to-film adaptations ever created. The DVD edition of the film is nicely rendered, with crisp images and superbly enveloping sound that immerses the viewer in the heart of the story. This film will remain one of the best films ever made in history, and is, by far, one of the greatest achievements for all those involved in its making.
Rating: Summary: A Great Movie Review: I think the green mile was a very well done movie. I thought that it was sort of fun to compare with the shawshank redemption, because they have some similar things about them other than the fact that they were both based on a novel by Stephen King and both directed by Frank Darabont. It was also interesting that The green mile made you sad and the Shawshank Redemption made you want to clap at the end of each movies. I think that all and all the Shawshank Redemption is a better movie but The Green Mile is worthy of a good review.
Rating: Summary: Magnificent movie !! Magnífica película !! Superbe film !!
Rating: Summary: Yup, It's Over-rated! Review: Tom Hanks LOVES these overwrought "human" stories, rather like Robin Williams does. Tom Hanks, though, manages to pick better ones (or is offered better ones). The Green Mile *tries* to be a tear jerker, but doesn't quite make it.... J.D. Salinger once defined sentimentality as loving something more than God does. It seems like an apt description of what's going on here. Frank Darabont sentimentalizes everything he can in this movie. First of all, just HOW loveable do you want to make your death row inmates? Please. The Green Mile has got to be the ONLY death row ever in which the majority (that is, all but one) of inmates are SO loveable, you HATE to see them fry! Of course, we are never told what they are in for (except the one we are led to hate), because we might love them less. All storytelling is manipulative, but this is a bit much. The one awful inmate is SO awful that we're supposed to be darn glad to see him go, but sadly, he was one of the two most entertaining characters in the movie, him and the weasely, sadistic guard (every "institutional" flick needs a sadistic guard). There is one important scene in the middle of the movie during which the guards feloniously take John Coffey (the central prisoner, with the magical powers) to the house of their supervisor, whose wife is dying of a brain tumor. Coffey, and absolutely gigantic African American, leans over and KISSES her, in a room full of Depression-era white men, including the woman's husband! No one bats an eye! All who find this believeable, raise your hands....I didn't think so. The movie tries to milk emotion, without really earning that emotion. There is nothing that new here, no surprises whatsoever, and no unique or original insights into humanity or our relationships with one another. The performances are good, and while the movie isn't boring, the last half does sort of grind to a halt. This is an average movie.
Rating: Summary: Way over rated Review: I just saw this flick and let me tell you this film is over rated. To start, the time is way too long , the story was streched out by too many sub plot's that had no connection to the movie or were not going to make a difference in the movie. My opinion, this is the type of garbage buble heads would read and watch. This is the type of entertainment average people confined in an average society find amusing,if you want to see a master piece then watch"pulp fiction" or"Being john malkovich'these movies were out of the ordinary society and were very original.
Rating: Summary: Well,,,,,,,, Review: I was sleepy while seeing the movie. I think this movie was made by people who want apparently to earn a good reputation. I know that everyone who makes movies wants to be praised. Indeed It's a high quality movie. But The Green Mile left me nothing. I think It's not worth seeing three hours! Thank you.
