Rating: Summary: Love it! Review: Great movie! It's just that It remindes me of another Danny DeVito movie which I can't think of right now but this has to be in your movie collection . When I went to see it at the movie boy I didn't think it was going to be that good. If their is one movie to buy this year is have to be this one for so many reason that I would never end this review. So take what I say and buy it to see how good a movie really is.
Rating: Summary: I LOVED THIS MOVIE . ... Review: I LOVED THIS MOVIE!...WHAT A DARK COMEDY... IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE OFF KEY . IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE A LITTLE STUPID . THAT'S THE POINT. THE WHOLE CAST OF THIS MOVIE IS GREAT AND THEY MAKE IT WONDERFUL TO WATCH.
Rating: Summary: Only A Dream - Mona Dearly Review: DROWNING MONA is an intersting movie, to say the least, but it just did not live up to my expectations unfortunately. Wonderful cast. Danny Devito, Bette Midler, Jamie Lee Curtis, Neve Campbell, they all turn in deserving performances. It's the plot that has a few problems. The movie starts off with Mona Dearly (Bette Midler) driving away in her son's car, the brakes have been cut and Mona dies going over a cliff. Mona Dearly was a hated woman, and the question isn't who did it, but who wouldn't do it? The whole town hated her. So through flashbacks we see Mona, and how she interacted with the characters. It is a funny movie, but very slow paced. As well its a bit predictable, I knew who killed Mona long before it was explored in the movie. However there is a bit of a mystery, and intrigue here with the title. Mona Dearly is an anagram for Only A Dream, so perhaps the events unfold in the movie as if it were a dream. Still the plot left a bit to be desired, but the acting was excellent. Another small complaint is, it would have been nice to seen the Divine Miss M in more scenes than she was, her talents were not truly utilized in this film, but she gave a solid performance overall.
Rating: Summary: Drown this One Please Review: Except for Danny DeVito this movie is hideous. I love most of the actors here (Will Ferrel, Bette, Jamie Lee Curtis, and the brilliant William Fitchner) but what there stuck with is [weak], overlong, and pointless...a shame because this movie could have been fabulous. As Charles Taylor said this is Danny DeVito's movie...he's such a marvellous presence here.....watch it if only to see Danny's performance
Rating: Summary: There's no other way to put it.... Review: this movie ... -- big time. It's not even trying to be pretentious. It's BAD. Don't waste your time or money. The script blows, there's no acting, and the "ac-tors" themselves seem to appear without makeup to enhance the eccentricities of the individual characters. Don't be fooled -- this one is a stinkeroo. (Was everyone involved trying to imitate the insipid David Lynch genre?) This movie is NOT cool -- but could still be a big hit in France.
Rating: Summary: OK But Could Be Better Review: The only reason why I bought this movie is b/c one of my favorite actresses~Bette Midler~had a role in it. I had already seen the film at the show and I liked it a little. The film is not your average. There is alot of campiness and just bland humor. I mean it is not really funny. It is more sick with people getting their fingers chopped off and everything. I was surprised that so many top rate actors starred in this movie like Casey Affleck, Danny DeVito, Neve Campbell, Jamie Lee Curtis and Bette. Overall, a decent movie. It's supposed to be a "mystery" but only buy if you are a fan of any of these stars or just like campy movies.
Rating: Summary: Fabulous Movie Review: I must admit I was shocked to see other reviews of this movie. How could anyone not absolutely LOVE it??? The only people I know personally who did not like this movie hated it because it hit too close to home! Maybe that's the case for the reviewer who cannot distinguish Yugos from Hugo (9/21/1989 Hurricaine). Will Ferrel, Jamie Lee Curtis, the Divine Ms M, Danny Devito all portrayed entertaining and colorful characters for side splitting laughter. "Jeph" Dearly's maming was priceless. I could go on and on .... And what about that soundtrack!!! Awesome all the way around. If you want to see a movie that will leave you rolling with laughter, this is for you.
Rating: Summary: oh, mona dearly . . . Review: trust me, i was not expecting much when i rented this movie, but to say i was pleasantly surprised is an understatement. the entire cast is fabulous and they play off each other expertly. standouts include the terrific danny devito and bette midler doing their thing, but william fichtner and neve campbell also are excellent. my personal favorite is casey affleck in a blonde wig, playing a mild-mannered landscaper with a darker side. his wide-eyed innocence is hilarious, and i loved his character
Rating: Summary: Drown this movie! Review: The script that was bought to be made into the movie Drowning Mona must have been completely different from the one that was handed out the day production started. If not, then the people hired to work on it were either blackmailed or drugged into signing up. Those are the only two plausible explanations for the waste of considerable talent in this inept and, worse yet, unfunny comedy.Everyone in this upstate New York town drives a Hugo because the place was picked as a test market back in 1974. Hugos are no longer manufactured and, apparently, in this town, neither are decent paying jobs, since everyone still drives these ratty little cars. Surely there was supposed to be a joke in this plot setup, but no one remembered to write the punch line. As the movie opens, the town terror, Mona Dearly [Bette Midler], is preparing to go somewhere in her Hugo. She makes it as far as a guardrail and plunges into a local lake. It turns out that her brakes were tampered with, and Chief Nash [Danny DeVito] now has a homicide on his hands. It doesn't help the investigation that all 400 inhabitants of the town are delighted that Mona is gone. About 100 of these people had a motive for murder. Bobby and Ellen [Casey Affleck and Neve Campbell], a young couple in love, both have motives. To compound the problem, Ellen is Chief Nash's daughter. Perhaps it is waitress Rona [Jamie Lee Curtis] who is having affairs with Phil and Jeff Dearly [William Fitchner and Marcus Thomas, Mona's husband and son respectively. Neither Dad nor Phil is aware of the other's involvement with Rona. All three have a good motive. In the end, though, it is nearly the entire audience that has reason to want to kill this movie. Since Bette Midler's character is killed in the movie's first 90 seconds, we see her only occasionally in flashbacks. This is a grave mistake because only when Midler in on screen does the movie start to light up. Danny DeVito can play it straight or play it funny. Here is plays it only straight, which is another mistake, for he is allowed to provide no comic relief. The director Nick Gomez is a distinguished TV director, whose credits include Homicide, as well as HBO's The Sopranos And Oz. Perhaps he does not work in the comedy genre, but it's more likely he was given little, if anything, to work with. Much of the time I watch movies at home alone. In this case I watched Drowning Mona with two friends. It is hard to make me laugh, which does not mean I don't have a sense of humor. My friends love to laugh. They frequently fall over from it. While watching this thing, the only things I heard from them were a couple of moans, a titter and a yawn.
Rating: Summary: The flashbacks worked Review: Drowning Mona is a humorous movie where the flasbacks worked. I was not in a fit of glee when the family decided to watch this rather unknown Danny DeVito flic. "It can't be too awful with Jamie Lee Curtis," I thought. After a slow start-- the corn-ball jokes, the country bumpkin characters, complicated plot, and the out-dated Jugo absurdity--Mona's murder took on a funny tinge. The flashbacks made it work. They were not artsy flashbacks for art's sake. They cleverly contributed to the plot. They made the story move. Every character--quality cardboard--was well cast. In her role, Bette Midler as the merdeuse, Mona, had the upper hand in giving a five star performance, while Danny DeVito glued the story together. Everyone of the other characters pitched in for a laugh or two. You'll have fun watching this movie.
