Rating: Summary: Hilarious. Wonderful film. Review: Summary: Johnny Hooker (Robert Redford) is a small scale hustler who gets caught up with a big time mob boss, Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw), when one of Johnny's scams takes some of Doyle's money. Doyle wants to teach the hustlers a lesson and orders them killed. Johnny's partner, Luther Coleman (Robert Earl Jones), is killed and Johnny has to skip town. Johnny ends up hooking up with Henry Gondorff (Paul Newman) and they set up an elaborate 'sting' to get Doyle Lonnegan for $500,000.My Comments: The movie is about as perfect as they come. The twists are convincing and the action is never far between. Robert Redford and Paul Newman are superb. What more can you say about a great movie. Final comment, whenever I hear The Entertainer by Joplin, I think about The Sting and laugh. One of my favorite movies of all time.
Rating: Summary: 'Pictured CD-Rom or CD with Redford and Newman' Review: I would say the only thing 'special edition' about this tape is it comes included with a 'pictured cd with Robert Redford and Paul Newman',the cd/cd-rom is shaped like a 'playing card',not your standard circle rounded disc. Great movie, great sound (THX Sound).
Rating: Summary: An enduring classic... Review: Widely considered one of the best movies of all time, "The Sting" won seven Academy Awards when first released. Paul Newman and Robert Redford pair up on screen to create one of the most entertaining films on record. Set in the depression era, the two con artists set their sights on the biggest mark in the country, a mob kingpin played by Robert Shaw. As they edge closer to the ultimate payoff, things heat up with the feds moving in from one direction and mob from the other. One of the best films ever...
Rating: Summary: AWESOME MOVIE, Cruddy DVD Review: Come one, A movie of this fame HAS to be seen in WIDESCREEN. I bought the DVD, and then found out it was Pan and Scan. What crud. I sent it back, and got my money back. Hey Hollywood, Make a lot of money and put it out in a Special Edition, Widescreen version. Then we'll buy it.
Rating: Summary: Classic Film Ruined By Pan & Scan Presentation Review: Paul Newman and Robert Redford re-unite with director George Roy Hill ("Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid") to create one of the most clever and stylish capers ever brought to the big screen. "The Sting" has it all--- great script, humor, cunning set-ups, marvelous soundtrack and impeccable performances. Newman and Redford iluminate the screen with their twisted sense of comradery. Tossing off casual one-liners and jaded barbs, their magical performance is basically an extension of the hedonistic antagonism which worked so well in "Butch Cassidy". The always great Robert Shaw ("From Russia with Love" and "Jaws") is right at home in the role of the coniving mobster who has finally met his match. Numerous plot twists are guaranteed to keep you guessing until the end when the whole scam is finally revealed. "The Sting" is so intelligent, so funny and so well produced--it is literally Hollywood at its best. Sadly, this all-time classic, which bagged seven Academy Awards in 1973, is presented in an inexcusably shoddy DVD package. With the exception of brief production notes which reveal very little about the making of the film, this is a bare-bones set. Worst of all, is the Pan and Scan (i.e. Full Screen) presentation of the film itself. With 16x9 television technology looming, standard 4:3 T.V. screens will soon go the way of the Victrola. And won't it be a shame if "The Sting" is not available to be seen in it's full widescreen glory. Please release it in widescreen!
Rating: Summary: Supreme Sting Review: I love sting. He is one of Britain's true national treasures. So what If he sold-out by doing Jaguar commercials (its pronounced Jag-U-Are). His deep rich melodies have kept me rocking for going on 20 years now. I only hope he comes out with more Eurotrash soon.
Rating: Summary: Great movie set during the time Ragtime was king Review: This is a fantastic movie. It is about two con-men (Robert Redford and Paul Newman) who set out to avenge the death of a friend by a ruthless mobster. They set up a bogus horse race gambling facility and con this mobster in betting on bogus horse races. I have one problem, with all of the people in on this scam, I don't think their take was very high. Unless, they recieved a percentage based on their involvement. This was a great movie that really captured early 20th century America. A big part of this movie was The Music of Scott Joplin. The sting revitlized his music. People think that "The Entertainer" was Scott Joplin's biggest hit. In reality his biggest hit was "Maple Leaf Rag". In Scott Joplin's time ragtime was considered "The Devil's music". The Sting gave Scott Joplin ,and his music, the dignity and respect it richly deserves.
Rating: Summary: "Ya Follow?" Review: Even better than there first outing together, Robert Redford, Paul Newman and Director George Roy Hill, would team up to deliever one of the best films ever. The Sting was a critical and box-office hit from the begining. Robert Redford (Johnny Hooker) has never played the big con and still doesn't find a reason until a close friend and fellow conman is killed. After this Hooker goes to find the great Henry Gondorff (Paul Newman) to help him bring down the cruel yet smart Chicago Mob Boss, Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw.) What follows is one of the best set up's ever! And the poker game played between Gondorff and Lonnegan and several other men is among the best ever put on film. However Hooker is always trying to stay one step ahead of a local cop who is trying to catch him in something so he can bring him in and possibly make the big bust! Hooker just seems to have a nose for trouble as he gets involved with a women from a local diner and nearly gets killed several times! As all this happens Gondorff and Hooker are trying to get the perfect "Sting" set up to bring down as much of Lonnegan as possible. Then the FBI gets into the show and it seems like everything is over and for good reason. But I won't tell what happens, because it would be telling one of the best endings ever! Followed by a solid supporting cast that includes Harold Gould, Charles Durning, and Ray Walston. A winner of 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture (1973) and Best Director (Hill) it also won for Best Original Screenplay, Art/Set Decoration, Score, Editing and Costume. Almost 30 years later it still delievers the goods and never gets out, always revealing something new each time you see it! Grade:A
Rating: Summary: WARNING - THIS DVD IS NOT LETERBOXED Review: This is a great film. Anyone looking for a review of the actual film may look in any number of places and find that everyone agrees that it is outstanding. HOWEVER, I failed to read the complete description for the DVD, foolishly assuming that the film would be presented in the appropriate widescreen format. I was shocked and appalled to receive the DVD and find that it was the pan 'n' scan version. This is entirely unacceptable. I returned the DVD and will wait for a letterboxed version. Do not make the same mistake I made. If you have any interest in seeing this film as it was originally intended, and not "modified to fit your screen," do not purchase this DVD.
Rating: Summary: 5 Star Movie on 1 Star DVD Review: One star for the DVD and five stars for the movie. C'mon Universal just release the 30th anniversary widescreen early already! (You ARE working on this right??)
