Summary: Baise This!
Review: Subsequent to weeks of hysteria that controlled the media publicity at the time of Baise-Moi', I went to see the named film and view it in my own right. Based on former-prostitute Despentes' novel of the same name, the gaunt story follows characters Manu & Nadine and their single-handed fight against the men of France as they go an orgy of murder and sex.After Manu is raped in a downtown garage by two men, where her friend was also present and treated to the same ordeal, she teams up with Nadine in an underpass of a train station and offers her the chance of wreaking havoc by her side. Nadine accepts and the wafer-thin plot begins to unravel to tragic effect. Sleeping around ad treating men like dirt is where the kicks are found, before callously butchering them in various places from blows to organs to unmentionable to say. A prime example of the films nature is in one of the opening scenes when Nadine is masturbating on her bed to a pornographic film and when her friend enters, she fails to stop. It's with that the mentality of the films' language becomes blindingly clear. Explicit as well as boring, 'Baise-Moi' (roughly translated to 'Rape-Me' in English) leaves nothing to the imagination as clear-cut images of rape and other sexual shenanigans are left for us to endure in this hard-core rendition of Ridley Scotts' 1991 cult road-movie 'Thelma & Louise'. Originally filmed in 2000 on a shoestring budget, it took two years for 'Baise-Moi' to finally reach our screens, although only a short amount of time was spent in England due to many cinema chains refusing to project the reels. Starring real-life porn actresses Anderson & Bach, the reason they were chosen was because they had both been raped for real in the past. Snipped by 7 seconds to excuse a now infamous penetration shot of Manus' rape scene, the BBFC left the rest in their new plans to relax the guidelines for the cinema industry. Directors Despentes & Tri must have seen that their plot less script and Blair-Witch type photography was nothing more than a would-be, home-made, straight-to-video, shabby porn flick that deserves nothing more than what it gets. But, 'Baise-Moi' hit the big time breeding on its controversy alone. It should have been a sign to the BBFC when France and liberal countries banned it outright. Cult status looks a promising outlook. You will either love it or hate it. One of 2002's worst.

Summary: ROUGH STUFF.....
Review: No, this movie isn't for everyone but that's why we have filmmakers in the world who examine mores, culture and status in our varying societies. This film is directed by women, starring women and is about the way women are abused and exploited in our collective societies. It is MEANT to look "grainy" for the realistic feel and is MEANT to be shocking and grotesque to force us to examine our own reactions to it. It is also MEANT to depict women revolting against "the rules" because men have kept women down for so long exploiting them and abusing them mentally, physically and emotionally so that two individual women of differing circumstances explode and kill in such a fury that ,I think, is meant to force us to examine our own roles in the way women are treated. WHY are women automatically associated with sex? WHY are women still thought of as "not quite" equal to men? WHY are women still abused and sold as meat in advertising? WHY do a lot of women still end up as prostitutes and virtual slaves to a male dominated society? These are questions I found myself asking after viewing "Baise-Moi". It is not an easy film to watch because the two leads are good actresses and it's easy to sympathize with their plight. But we can also ask why did they not turn their situations around and get out of them. Well, when you have been programmed by society to accept things "as they are" then maybe there IS no other way out for some. "Baise-Moi" is designed to make you THINK about women's roles in society and THINK AGAIN before you plug in that porno or pick up that skin mag. That is what I feel this movie tries to say. But is anybody listening?

The story of this film revolves around two young women who feel that they have been ill-used by all of the men in their lives. And so, with some stolen money and a six pack of beer they set out on a road trip where along they way they fornicate and kill without discrimination or remorse.
This film will never win any Oscars, but it will make people think and talk about it. This isn't the best film that I ever saw, but give it 20 years it will probably be a cult film.
I didn't get to see this in the cinema, but the amount of hullabaloo that went on in the Australian media which led to the film being banned (the police went to the cinemas and asked the management to stop showing the movie. So 1950's) was over the top. Sure, I always find scenes of rape disturbing (as well it should be), but personally I thought 'The Accused' was far more uglier than the one in this film.
For anybody out there who considers themselves to be an even halfway mature adult, don't let the preaching of religious zealots or the do-gooding of censorship boards and DEFINITELY NOT THE MEDIA influence your decision to see this film. If you consider yourself to be a mature liberal minded adult, then watch this movie yourself and judge it for yourself.

Summary: Baise tu!
Review: With the same level of explicit sex as Catherine Breillat's 1999 film "Romance", (which is far superior) "Baise Moi" makes up for lack of plot by adding in lots of pointless violence. The film quality is poor, it is highly grainy in texture. There is also a minimal of plot - basically a road movie a la "Thelma & Louise" only more suited to porn. Banned in my country due to the excess of violence, I was non-the-less able to view this by ordering in a DVD copy from overseas. I'm glad I didn't have to sit through this at the cinema! This film already has 'cult' status because it was obviously made to shock, rather than entertain, & in this at least, it succeeds. Baise moi? Baise tu!

Summary: Rent the movie, but don't buy it.
Review: This movie seems to be an either love it or hate it film. I have read and heard quite a few reviews, and none seem to be in the middle. That is somewhat understandable. This is a gory, sexually explicit film, that takes American audiences beyond the comfort provided by the typical movie screening. I walked in not knowing what to expect and walked out feeling as if I had just watched a cracked out version of Thelma and Louis. BE WARNED, the rape scene in the beggining was very difficult to watch. I have a high tolerance for things of graphic nature, and I still felt somewhat disturbed by that scene.
The rest of the movie is easier to watch, but does not dissapoint in tempo. While we are bombarded with killing and sex by these two women, the juxtaposition of the visceral emotions of these women and the caring/loving relationship that they form is what ultimately keeps us fascinated by the film though. Not the porn and violence.
Anyways, rent the movie and pass your own judgement...I personally wouldn't buy it, but I would recommend seeing it.

Summary: Explicit but not much else
Review: Two women, victims of sexual or other abuse, simultaneously snap and head off on the run together, leaving carnage in their wake. Sure, fine, its the same plot as Thelma & Louise, but that isn't necessarily damning. What is damning is that unlike Thelma & Louise, the two main characters are completely devoid of any human depth or introspection. They're as one dimensional as pornstars, and this is like a porn movie- the entire focus of the film becomes the next explicit scene (either graphic violence or very graphic sex), and the plot becomes a vehicle for getting to that next scene.
That said, the film should be applauded for breaking down the barrier between porn and non-porn film- is there any reason pornography (which started off as art film) should be as poor as it is as film? Or that wide distribution films should be so fearful of showing realistic sex scenes? Maybe this film shouldn't be viewed so much as an exploitation flick as an experiment in undermining these artificial boundaries.

Summary: The most controversial movie in the century!
Review: This movie is indeed the most controversial in my DVD collection, but for a totally different reason. I just can't decide whether it belongs to my movie collection or my porn collection! I can't make my mind at all! One thing that is not controversial about this movie though, which is the fact that it [stinks] either way! If you decide to look at it as a real movie then you'll be disappointed with the HORRIBLE acting, lousy directing, bad music, and the additional fact that the movie lacks any form of a plot! There is no plot at all! Two girls angry at men get together and go on a sex and murder spree! C'est tout! This simple idea left the actresses with very minimal acting work to do, yet they couldn't perform even that adequately! The violent scenes are lame and childish and the amount of blood is just ridiculous! And even the rape scene in the beginning was annoying! Besides, there's just too much sex material for it to be considered a real movie. Every thing is shown here, penises, vaginas, intercourses, and even semen! This movie is just too dirty and too awful to be stored in my movie collection. But if I try to look at it as a porn movie I get disappointed even more! The actresses are not beautiful and the sex scenes are not real hard core! There's too much time spent on the presumed plot and the sexual scenes end quickly. The picture isn't that clear and the camera movement during the sex scenes is distracting. Plus, if you add the real sex time throughout the movie you'll get nothing more than 15 minutes overall! This is not my idea of a porn movie. I tried storing this movie among my porn collection but it's just not porn! So what do we have here? Well, we're left with either of two choices. Either this is a new breed of movies which combines the style of regular movies with the explicitness of porn movies. With this choice, you'll have a bad story, poor acting, not so attractive actresses, and very lousy sex for a regular/porn movie. The other choice is that we have nothing here! This is just a bad attempt to combine both industries into a single movie called "Baise-moi". I totally regret buying this movie, but not only for the money I paid for it. But also because I'm stuck with it and I don't know where to put it! In conclusion, I do not recommend buying this movie whether you're in for the porn or for the action.

Summary: Bad, bad, bad...
Review: You have *got* to be kidding. This movie is horrible. Thelma and Louise at least had personality. The two girls in this movie barely register as characters. If fact, it's unclear who any of the characters really are. I'm not sure how this can be viewed as a revenge movie where they are out to kill men. Raffaela Anderson's character beats her female roommate to death "by accident." Karen Lancaume's character gets in a fight with her brother(?) and shoots him, kisses him goodbye and steals his money and car. However, she can't drive (for whatever reason). They both want to skip town, and meet each other. This is were Anderson comes in. She can drive them around France while they murder people. Men and women. They're not anti-male, they're just psychotic.

Summary: Beautiful
Review: THE CONS: Poor quality filmmaking, thin plot. THE PROS: Karen Bach (aka Karen Lancaume in the adult industry) and Raffaëla Anderson (couldn't resist that joke ... Pro's get it?), Hardcore violence, Hardcore sex (I'm talking proper porno here). Is it worth it? Yes, controversial films are always worth it even if you hate it (you can't hate porn can you?) you can always claim you've seen it and the ability to sell it later is infinate. If you see Baise Moi with the expectations that it's bad filmmaking and your just there for the eye candy and violence, you'll enjoy it very much ... if you go into it thinking with all the controversy that it's the best thing since sliced bread, ofcourse you will be disappointed (as with any film). Not for the easily offended, but a must see. Also the packaging's running time is incorrect, but have no fear, this is the uncut version, I assure you.
