Summary: Solid film noir with Lawrence Tierney at his best!
Review: I didn't expect such a great film from Alpha, but I was really impressed by this winner. Lawrence Tierney made several great film noirs, almost always playing ruthless killers. Max Nosseck, who directed 1945's "Dillinger" with Lawrence Tierney in the starring role, also directed this classic. Tierney plays Vincent Lubeck, a "hoodlum" just released from prison after serving 5 years. He gets a job helping his brother(played by real life brother Edward Tierney, in his very impressive film debut)work at a gas station. Vincent soon sets his sights on the local bank, however, & he quickly assembles a top-notch crew of criminals to help him steal $500,000. He also finds time to seduce his brother's girlfriend, which later leads to tragedy for the family. The heist, of course, doesn't go as planned & several guards are shot down in cold blood. Then comes the big manhunt, during which Vincent finds himself alone with no friends left. The scene with Vincent & his mother (at her deathbed) is really powerful & he finally shows that he does have a heart. The final confrontation between Vincent & his brother is also powerful, but I won't give away the ending. This gritty classic has great dialogue, excellent casting (especially the Tierney brothers), & a fast pace that'll keep anyone interested throughout the film. The picture & sound quality is okay(for Alpha) but I'd love to see this properly restored someday. As it is, it's well worth the low cost.
