Review: Be aware that the quality of the films is not the greatest. Universal put out superior Laser Discs and videos of these Sherlock Holmes films. The extra material is good to have but I think most people are buying this set for the films themselves. There are better prints of these films out there.

Summary: Disappointing quality from a huge Sherlock Holmes fan.
Review: First of all, I am a huge Sherlock Holmes fan. In the early 1980's a local LA television station played the entire Basil Rathbone series, one per Sunday, over a period of months. I taped the entire series. I purchased this DVD collection believing that I would have equal or better technical quality than my 20+ year old tapes. WRONG!! The sound quality is so poor as to be difficult to hear. Video is worse. I attribute this to lack of interest by the technicians. In this age of digital manipulation, the sound could, at a minimum, have been stabilized from the source. It actually should have been remastered. No, unfortunately, this set is a production by folks who just didn't care. Really disappointing.

Review: Here is a gift to those of you who will see the "Woman In Green" about the finger murders....In the climatic scene when Henry Daniell as Moriarity dictates a suicide note and tells Holmes to "sign your name", Basil Rathbone signs his real name, including crossing the "T" in his last name.This collection is priceless for the radio shows alone....I have all these movies on tape and some on laser disc, but I jumped at the chance to get this boxed set...my question: when will we get the other 8 films on DVD.

Summary: Highly Disapointing
Review: I almost died waiting for this. I have all the rathbone holmes videos on VHS and the quality of the VHS is substantially better. I am not sure how these people managed to do it, but the sound is next to impossible to understand on dressed to kill and the radio plays are the worst quality I have heard. I suggest you buy the VHS editions and purchase the simon & shuster releases of the radio plays on cassette (available at amazon also). Dont waste your money on this one.

Summary: Excellent Quality Transfer
Review: I grew up watching Basil Rathbone in Sherlock Holmes and the old Charlie Chan series every Sunday afternoon on WGN. This brings back memories of those days and takes it one step beyond with DVD quality video. I was impressed with the clarity and lack of drop outs on the video which is characteristic of the average restored film. The audio was an overall excellent with a few instances of background noise. Any true Sherlock Holmes fan should own this version. The interview with Sir Conan Doyle is interesting and informative. The radio shows are also a bonus.

Summary: A very disappointing DVD Set
Review: I have seen much better Sherlock Holmes movies on TV. The audio is garbled on some of the discs making it hard to listen to. The audio radio programs are exceptional however. Very good. But I bought this set for the movies, not for the audio programs. I hope that some of the other Sherlock Holmes movies that will be coming out from other Companies are better than this one. I just saw "Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars" and was very pleased, both with the picture and sound, which is exceptional for a Movie made over 60 years ago. The Company that put together these Movies should be ashamed of themselves for putting out these Movies and charging these prices for them.

Summary: Don't buy this!
Review: I love the old Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce adventures. Actually, I own all of them on VHS, so when they were going to be released on DVD I quickly placed an order. To say that this is a disappointment is to put it mildly. First off, the movie quality is incredibly bad. Sound and visual is all a mess. And in the "restoration" they have edited key scenes! A great example is in Terror By Night when they don't introduce us to Watson's friend (Who plays an important part later). The VHS copies I have of the old films show that there are prints out there of high quality. It's too bad they just didn't transfer those prints to DVD as compared to this mess they created from the old stock.... If you enjoy these films, avoid these DVDs and head over to the VHS editions released by Key Video.

Summary: A delighful evening every Sherlock Holmes fan would enjoy.
Review: I must admit my benevolent addiction to Sherlock Holmes which has lasted many years. This package provides visual enjoyment as well as audio adventure. Technically there may be those who find fault with the quality of the video portion of the package. However, there are also purists who would say most of the films are non-canonical, i.e.(not written by Arthur Conan Doyle). I believe the content of the package will please both fans of Sherlock Holmes as well as those of Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. The latter two actors were the embodiment of the Great Detective and his amiable colleague for many years. Only with the advent of Jeremy Brett did we embrace a proper heir to the mantle of the Great Dectective. The collection of sights and sounds this set offers will please the interested novice as well us venerable older Sherlockians. Buy it for youself and or buy it for a good friend.
