Rating: Summary: DVD ASAP!!! Review: This is one of those rare films that stands up beautifully to repeated viewing. So much so, that I go out of my way to catch it when it airs on television. (Like Casablanca) I even stayed up until 4 a.m. on one occasion. I have scoured video stores looking to rent the VHS for my wife (who has never seen it), but without success. I may end up buying the VHS, just to savor the film until a DVD comes out. With an ensemble cast that really couldn't have been better chosen, it is simply loads of fun to watch. Admittedly, some of the performances are served up with big juicy slabs of "ham". But, IMHO, it simply adds to the enjoyment. Every performance is spot on. And the film evinces the elegance of a bygone era, creating a delightful amibience as the back-drop for a murder most foul. (And yet...) A true classic, and one I eagerly anticipate on an eventual DVD release.
Rating: Summary: Definitely up to Agatha Christie standards Review: This movie has every that made at Agatha Christie movies great. Everyone is a suspect. Everybody could have done it. Only Hercule Poirot can figure this out. Naturally Hercule Poirot is in the right place at the right time to hear everything and extract the truth. You need to add this one to your collection.
Rating: Summary: great potential but not achieved Review: to be brief, this would have been an excellent movie had only albert finney portrayed poirot with unaccented , but more importantly easily understood dialogue. too many times i had to back up and play back the conversations of poirot and strain to understand what he was saying. i fail to see why the director would let this happen ,
Rating: Summary: May be disappointing Review: While the movie is a faithful adaptation of Agatha Christie's book, Albert Finney's portrayal of the quirky but brilliant Hercule Poirot is disappointing. Even those who are not familiar with David Suchet's interpretation will be disappointed if they have read many of the Poirot mysteries. Gone are most of Poirot's most obvious traits--his enormous vanity, his charm, his fastidiousness. If Albert Finney was familiar with Agatha Christie's character at all before the movie, it was only a very slight aquaintance. The rest of the cast is impeccable--Sean Connery, Lauren Bacall, Ingred Bergman--the list goes on and on. While some parts of the story have been changed, they are only slight changes and the movie remains true to the spirit and story of the book.
