Summary: What happened to the original?
Review: This film was fantastic in the theater! Left me with that dark erie feeling when I left the theater. What happenened? Although there is not that much actual film cut, the missing scenes leave a gaping hole in Harvey Kietels "Bad Lieutenant". Wish I had known this version had been cut. Still give it 3 stars because Kietel is in it. Anything that Harvey is in gets that just for having him.

Summary: a film about nothing, but it sure is good
Review: this is not even a story, its basicly like a camera man following a crooked cop on his last days of life.we get to watch harvey make bad bets, do ALOT of drug, yell at jesus, give a mexican(?) family the heroin stares, walk around high on drugs, and get shot. this is a really good movie but its really hard to watch cause it gets so dang boring in some parts. its worth buying this movie just to see harvey get angry and shoot his car radio, that will have you laughing so hard you will almost die, and to see him yell at jesus. and the coolest thing of all is that Ms. 45 IS IN IT!

Summary: "Only for cult followers..."
Review: The whole time you follow Harvey getting drugs, using drugs, placing bets, and doing other bad things while on duty. It's tedious and painful to watch; I can only give it points for its "right there," documentary-style camera-work and Harvey's effort in portraying the character. Rent it first to see if you want to buy... But be warned, Harvey will do an anguished, tormented whine/cry of agony that will stay with you for 3 days at least...

Summary: interesting variation on a not so typical cop scenario...
Review: Abel Ferrara's 'Bad Lieutenant' would have to be one of the most underrated films of the 90's. Not only is it quite daring in approach and subject matter but in it's uncompromising potrayal of a depraved individual. This particular character isn't exactly the epitome of a decent human being but mixed feelings towards him are conjured up from the viewer. Critics have slammed this movie for being 'over the top' and lacking a basic narrative drive. This is a fair assessment of the film but it's supposed to be a study of an empty spirt, not a person with depth or conviction. The absence of narrative perfectly complements the chaotic nature of his lifestyle and it's repurcussions on the human psyche. Ferrara's unconventional take on such a premise is what truly renders this film a memorable piece of art. An absolute must see.

Summary: BAD LIEUTENANT-Excellent
Review: Abel Ferrara created his best and most consistent work with 'Bad Lieutenant'. His over the top handling of a junkie, corrupt lieutenant is unlike anything you will ever see. Harvey Keitel's performance is not only grittily realistic but also emotional but not without humour. A recommendation of the highest order.

Summary: a nearly perfect cinematic portrait
Review: When is a movie critic going to realize that the Lieutenant isn't trying to redeem his soul? He just wants to catch the rapists and get the reward money to dig himself out of a hole with his bookie! The redemption comes later, and he doesn't do it for himself...

Even though it's against amazon.com's policy against spoilers, the above has to be said. "Bad Lieutenant" is not as simple as it's made out to be. It's an upsetting, complicated portrait of a cold, desperate man, and in years to come I hope this film will be seen as the "Detour" of the 1990's, opposing the simplistic optimism of mainstream movies. "Bad Lieutenant" is, for example, more optimistic and soulful to me than "Schindler's List," because Ferrara trusts the audience to be a witness to the worst a man can be, and if you sympathize with Keitel's Lieutenant, it will be of your own free will, not because the soundtrack swells at a heartwrenching moment or because a bad man sees the error of his ways: he does one good deed because he's run out of choices. Unable to redeem himself, he, just for once, helps a couple of guys who in his eyes don't even deserve to live.

I can't praise this film enough; it's as if Kurosowa had directed a film with uncharacteristic naturalism. Ferrara, Lund, and Keitel, their talents free from the tyranny of good taste, have produced a serious movie about lazy evil, fumbling salvation, and the painful misery of a life lived wrong. This is a harrowing and beautiful film, and deserves to be seen.

Summary: A must see!!!
Review: This is Harvey's best one yet. Outstanding performance as usual. You have to see this if you love dark drama.

Summary: Great performance by Harvey Keitel.
Review: This is one of Harvey Keitel's best performances. The movie has a very rough edge but if you're a fan of Harvey Keitel this is a film to see. Some viewers may find the content of the film disturbing however the performance is stunning.

Summary: A great movie that should be given its due.
Review: A friend of mine once recommended me the "Bad Lieutenant" and raved how great it was and how I had to see it. After seeing the film, I realized why the "Bad Lieutenant" is such a cult classic. You would think that Keitel's character would be a good cop who does the right thing. Instead you get a corrupt junkie cop who is damned from the very beginning and knows it. The scene where a delusional Keitel sees Jesus is the most intense emotional performance I have seen since De Niro's jail scene in Raging Bull. Abel Ferrara thankfully resisted any temptations to glamorize Keitel's drug use because it would have made his downward spiral less real and tragic. This is not an easy movie to stomach. It provokes so many conflicting emotions about the character because you hate the cop for being so evil. On the other hand, you want to understand why he does what he does, because deep down, you want him to be saved even though he is too late. I can't believe Keitel wasn't even nominated for an Oscar because his performance in this film is the best of the decade. Keitel and Ferrara took a big chance on the "Bad Lieutenant" but those two seem to create their best work when they do.
