Rating: Summary: surprisingly good Review: I was pleasantly surprised by this excellent film and the quality of its DVD transfer. I'm not a big fan of director Ferrara ("King of New York" was good, though- shows what he's capable of with great acotrs like Walken and Keitel). I picked up this disc purely on the recommendation of a friend and was immediately struck by the rawness of the film. Like many other low-budget American films shot on location in New York, Bad Lieutenant had that great quality where you can't tell who are professional actors and who are "real people" appearing in the film. I was reminded very much of the film "Kids" by this cinema verite style and by the central plotline- following the downward spiral of a depraved human being. Keitel is great as usual and I thought that the film's sound was remarkable. Not really a great score, but ther were rich ambient sounds and several "sound montages," as in the scene where Keitel awakens from his stupor at home on his couch to the layered sounds of children's TV and muffled conversation. The song echos over and over in his (and the audeience's) head- "We did it before and we can do it again..."
Rating: Summary: Bad Lieutentant, NC-17 Review: For many, this will be a disturbing movie, but it shows a non-hollywood view of a cop gone bad. If you make the mistake of seeing the "R" rated version, you will have seen "Kind of Bad Lieutentant". Don't waste your time with that or you'll miss out on how bad he really is. If your a Harvey Keitel fan, this is a must see.
Rating: Summary: Depravity defined Review: Bad Lieutenant is the best representation of human depravity ever put to film. It confirms that Harvey Keitel is the greatest actor of our time. Be forewarned--it is as disturbing as it is brilliant. Make sure you see the NC-17 version. The film makes no compromises, and neither should you.
Rating: Summary: God in first-person Review: Well, I must say that this is one of my all-time favorite films. It's as pure as rock and roll. Too many films these days deal with things on the safe stage of irony and cleverness, but this movie manages to transcend sensationalism and exploitation by stripping away any ulterior motives that would taint the experience. It's a film you can't defend, but you don't need to. I don't think Ferrara ever said he was trying to please anybody.
Rating: Summary: Keitel should have won an Oscar as this cop gone bad........ Review: I have seen this movie twice and plan on seeing it again. Keitel should have won an Oscar in this cop gone bad film. His acting intensity puts him up there in the class of Pacino and De Niro. This film is also well written. I give it 5 stars all around. Well worth your time and money. You will not be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Harvey is amazing Review: This is the best performance of Harvey Keitel's career. The entire movie is unforgettable!
Rating: Summary: I am always right about movies and this is one of the best Review: Harvey Keitel's performance could never be matched; I have seen almost every movie made and this is in the top 10 performances of them all. The scene where the bad l. is squeeling out a hell cry from deep within while naked is awe inspiring. If, from what I here, that scene is cut out of the video being sold now, they have ruined the movie. You must have that scene along with all of the others to experience film greatness.
Rating: Summary: Disgraceful!!! Review: Harvy Kietel is one of my all time favorite actors. I kept reading that this was his best movie so I went and rented it. All it is is one scene after another showing us what a screw up this guy is. After all the drugs and all the corrupt acts of the first 45 minutes I turned it off because all it did was waste my time. For good Kietel, rent Reservoir Dogs.
Rating: Summary: It almost sucks you into the movie!! Review: I loved watching this movie but I was led to believe there was a full-frontal of keitel which must have been cut out of the video.
Rating: Summary: KEITEL IS MESMERIZING IN FERRARA'S HIDDEN GEM Review: Dark, scathing, unsettling film about a corrupt cop, a "bad lieutenant," battling his inner demons and seeking redemption. Film is raw, brutal, and shocking. Boasts top-notch direction from Ferrara, a brilliantly insightful script, and quite possibly Keitel's finest performance. Deserves much more recognition than it gets. Character dramas don't get much better than this, and Keitel's performance is one of the best of the decade.
