Review: I just don't get it. People have been raving about this wretched little excuse for a movie for nearly three years now, and such estatics just don't make sense. The plot is extremely simplistic, the characters woefully clinched, and yes, the acting is so bad it can't even qualify as an Ed Wood film. Billy Bob Thonrton's performance is one note. He slouches and grunts and this is supposed to be what passes for great acting. I adore independent film, but this one is a major dog people. Avoid at all costs.

Summary: You will never forget Carl.
Review: I've seen this movie three times and now I'm buying it - I know I'll never tire of it. I think of myself as something of a movie connoisseur, and this is one of my favorites. It is such an interesting insight into the human mind, the grey area between what's right and wrong, and how we treat and judge one another. Billy Bob Thornton proves his brilliance in so many ways through this film. I am truly impressed.

Review: I must admit I wasn't exactly thrilled to see this over-hyped (I thought) movie--that changed about 1 minute into it. Simply put, this is one of the best movies ever made. A simple (but not simplistic) plot about the sacrifices that doing good sometimes require, incredible acting by everyone and an outstanding soundtrack all combine to create one powerful movie. Quite simply: great. Anyone who gave it one star is quite obviously too impressed with themselves (and their vocabulary) to recognize the terrible beauty of this well-made movie. Well worth the time and money to see.

Summary: Impressive debut
Review: Judging from the previous reviews, this movies is either loved or hated. Considering the fact that it was Thornton's debut as a director, I would say it was very well done. Yes, the storyline was rather thin, but it somehow reflected the mind of Karl, from who's standpoint we view the film. Furthermore, much of the credit should go to the fact that Thornton tackled a sensitive issue, which gives any film a social relevance. I thought many reviewers spoke about the film as an evening entertainment that somehow didn't work for them (which is fine with me). The fact that the American prison and rehab systems are becoming the sole producers of criminals and misfits, made me watch this movie in a different perspective.

Review: after reading several other reviews i have come to the conclusion that you will either love this film or hate it. i enjoyed it. personal taste. i also noticed that all the folks who gave it bad reviews were hastily judgemental, shallow in their criticism and quick to exercise their superior eye for good art. seems like just because it received praise, they had to be critics. if you watch this movie with no big expectations, then i bet you'll find something you enjoy about it.

Review: I believe this film to be one of the best American films of recent years. Superb acting all around and a very well-developed plot. This movie is both touching (without being corny) and funny (without losing its drama), and certainly remains on the mind long after it has been seen. An example of quality American film-making.
