Summary: This film will always have a special place in my heart
Review: I remember watching this movie as a small child over and over again. I remember how I always wanted to visit the small town of Whistle Stop, and how I had watched the movie so many times that I felt like I actually knew every single one of the characters. I remember the special feeling I always got while watching this movie, and I remember the message of friendship that this movie shared with me, and many other people who have had the privalege to see this wonderful film! I highly recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for very special "feel good" film...a film that they could love forever!

Summary: Better than wildest dreams
Review: Collectors' editions can be a bit of a scam, a few tacky bells and whistles to make you think you're getting something cool. But Fried Green Tomatoes' collectors' edition was beyond my wildest dreams. Don't even think of buying the standard version if you can get this one. The "making of it" is a full-length documentary in its own right, and dispenses star interviews intermingled with unusual gossip and tidbits for fans... like why did Mary Stuart Masterton *really* do her own bee stunt! (The stunt double panicked and refused.)

The director's comments option was awesome - as is the case with any film where the project is the director's baby and a labor of love for years (as FGT was for Jon Avnet). The restored scenes shown were fascinating - such as Idgy mooning adoringly over Ruth while Ruth's teaching; and Grady pointing out to Idgy he doesn't wear size 14 boots and was certainly *not* a member of the KKK. For the most part (with two exceptions) I was very sad the removed scenes never made the final cut on original release.

The only quibble is the lovely little picture booklet the DVD comes with is at odds with some facts contained in the movie documentary. (eg That panicked stunt double apparently didn't panic after all if you believe the booklet.) And the booklet also promises a recipe for Fried Green Tomatoes on the DVD which isn't there. Nonetheless - this version is worth absolutely every cent. Tawandas out there should settle for nothing less...

Review: One of my English teachers showed us this video in the class. I remembered that we were really moved and since then I tell every friend of mine that this video is just great. I read the book last year and thought it was kinda different from the movie but also the book was very good. I give this video to my friends on thier birthday whenever I have a chance. I have learned how importnat the friendship is from this video. If you are wondering what you should give to your precious friend, simply get this video for her!

Summary: An unusual film, indeed...coming from Hollywood...Great!
Review: I saw this film as part of a Gay Film Festival at my U. (don't ask...) It is a lovely story about women, their hardships, and their unity. It is told is a series of flashbacks, so the beginning of this century always gets mixed up with early 90's. But, not only it talks about "women" problems, it also gives a good picture of South, its racism, and its overall dynamics. Kathy Bates simply shines in her role as an unhappy and conventional housewife, who can't stand being conventional any longer. All in all, great movie!

Summary: A brilliant movie by Jon Avnet
Review: Thank God once in a while movies like "Fried Green Tomatoes" come along. It is truly a masterpiece, a movie that will make you laugh and cry. It is honest and captivating. Jon Avnet proved to be a brilliant director in his first time around - it is quite awesome how well he conducts the actors. I have just bought the DVD of it, and watching it in glorious sound and image is a must. I highly recommend it.

Summary: An interesting look at Bad Ol¿ Alabammy
Review: While I have some reservations about the way this film was put together, I have to admit that, at the end, I was very favourably impressed. Possibly the film tried to do too much; possibly it found itself in difficulties at times and lacked clear direction. Whatever the truth of these first impressions, whenever the film started to get lost, it managed to find its way back to the main story without losing this particular viewer. At the same time, although I was occasionally peeved by dialogue that seemed contrived (more so in the first half-hour), the action held my attention with hardly a lapse. This is not easy to do when you are developing two stories concurrently, one in the past, one in the here and now. I must say those occasions when the story in the past was about to resume were not always well handled. Yet these are comparatively minor matters.

Much of what we are told about the times (we are in Alabama between the wars) comes through the mouthpiece (and actions) of the film's eccentric main character. An outspoken woman who never hesitates to challenge male authority, whether on behalf of her friends, the local Negroes, or a wife whose husband is beating her, she leads her own private fight against local bigotry. Indeed, it is the women in this film who hold our interest: they are all struggling in a male world to make a life for themselves. Perhaps the notion of a lone woman holding out in those times against racist townspeople, corrupt law enforcement agents and local Klansmen is a bit unlikely, but we admire her spirit. I won't say this is a great film, but it is well above average and certainly worth a couple of hours of anybody's time.

Summary: Great movie-- for all ages!
Review: I saw this movie when I was only ten, and suffice to say, it was as inspiring for a ten year old as it is for me today. THe characters are wonderful and expressive. See this movie-- you will never regret it!

Summary: I've seen it several times and I love it more each time
Review: I love movies with a historical theme and this movie shows life in the early years of the 1900's and through the depression era.

The two main characters - Ruth and Idgy (sp?)are very strong women who have hard lives but continue to rise above their challenges and not lose their humanity and compassion. These woman are interesting because they show their willingness and ability to take a strong moral stand and not back down - even when their very lives are threatened.

And the characters are all so interesting and believable. It is quite an intense little movie.

Leaves you thinking about the characters, long after the movie has ended.
