Summary: oh, go ahead and watch it
Review: What's wrong with this movie can be summed up thusly: someone tried to make a film for thinking persons, and realized it was only going to rake in with the low-brow (owing, most likely, to the attachment to DreamWorks). Use this as criteria for judging what degree of moron the film panders to: the very first clue, the one setting off the chain of events, is Naomi Watts' discovery of a Next-Day Photo business card in her dead niece's school binder; no writing, dates, etc, just some hearts drawn on. She goes and picks up the photos. How would she have known when it was from, that the photos were still there? Even if she didn't know, what is so initially compelling about a business card? In the excised version of this scene, which they have at the end of the VHS version, she finds a photo CLAIM TICKET taped to the girl's wall calendar, on the day that the pictures were taken. This would have neatly established that the photos had not been picked up, and that they had been taken very recently. There's no way that a writer/director following the line of thought/concept characterizing this film (how Americans are mad to breed then plop their results in front of televisions; media pernicious, spread like virus...) would have contrived such ludicrous plot details (it's not the only one; a later scene has Watts circling the only person in a photograph and murmuring her name aloud, I guess as a concession to those who do their viewing glassy-eyed and glazed in drool). Somewhere along the line, Steven Spielberg or whoever pulled the director aside and said, "Uhh, no one's going to know what's going on." After I was done being insulted, I became very sad. The movie has fabulous cinematography, subtle sound and imagery, and a neat conceptual parallel to the book it's based on, but the end result likens to Scream and I think someone should be severely punished for it.

Summary: good movie, stupid ending.
Review: when I picked this out of an enormous DVD collection to watch, I wasn't sure what to expect. When I played the DVD, the interactive menus flashed up on the screen...it was a bit freaky. reminded me alot of the SEVEN Special Edition DVD.

The movie is dark and the film fades in and out throughout the whole movie...at first it really bothered me, bothered me enough to turn the film off, but once I got into it, that didn't bother me as much. when the film started, I'm thinking "great...this will be just like jeepers creepers, thirteen ghosts, and any other movie with a stupid ending". It turns out I wasn't wrong. I'm not going to spoil the ending for you, but I will say, don't be fooled by the happy ending scene towards the end. It drastically changes.

This movie must have been filmed on the eastern coast during the rainy season. Throughout this WHOLE movie, it is raining or is overcast weather. It's so dark and gloomy...that's one part I like about this movie. I'm sure the other reviews will tell you all about what happens in the movie, but this review's purpose is to plan you for what's ahead...a good movie that pulls you in, and then kicks you and says "hahaha you fell for it!"

Summary: Not since The Exorcist or Rosemary's Baby....
Review: has a movie been so truly SCARY! Forget the hype and use you r imagination and I'm sure you'll like this. Remember when Halloween came out, it was given bad reviews and is now praised. Sam with this film, when the hype dies down the movie's rating will go up.

Summary: What's up with that?
Review: I'm a female who loves a good scary movie. A coworker suggested I watch this movie and I have to say I was completely disappointed! Where was the blood? How was she killing her victims? What was the deal with the tape? Too many questions and not enough answers. Maybe had I stayed awake I would have understood what in the world was going on.

Summary: Great movie.
Review: Great movie and very scary although the Japanese version of it is even scarier. The Japanese trilogy would be the best thing to buy.

Summary: Creepiest film since the exorcist
Review: While this isn't nearly as scary as The Exorcist, it still packs a wallope. See it.

Summary: It's simple...It's popular, that is why some don't like it.
Review: Alot of people got scared in this movie so that got these debunkers thinking "what's so good about it?" So they go in there already made up there mind about the movie, and watch just to say oh it wasn't scary. Let's face it people Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, and The Birds aren't scary. This is. I laughed my head off at Psycho and these debunkers praise it. Please it was boring! Another thing that got people's hopes up to high is that this movie was compared with Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist. Those 2 movies are like the scariest movies ever, so it's no wonder this didn't meet people's expectations. Another thing is these people OVER ANALYSE everything! It's a horror movie for crying out loud people! It's job is to scare you, but if don't allow it to, then it won't stop trying to be tough! But the biggest reason these debunkers hate this is the fact that it is a NEW HORROR FILM. They have been biased against new horror films since the beggining. Why? Because Scream came out and scared people and that got people into horror films again. So those people looked at the old classics these debunkers like such as Psycho and laughed at it. The debunkers got there feeling hurt, so ever since then everytime they hear one of these new horror films is scaring people they go in there just to debunk it. Quit whining. NOBODY THINKS PSYCHO IS THAT SCARY. The Ring is so much scarier than Psycho, but doesn't hold a candel to The Exorcist.

Summary: Enjoyable for a non-horror buff
Review: While I enjoy Sci-Fi/Fantasy, I'm not a huge fan of horror. Turns out this isn't exactly a horror (note the pg13 rating), as much a drama/mystery with some horror elements. I was pretty satisfied with the movie as well as the ending, many people might have seen it coming, but I was sufficiently engrossed in the movie that I found the ending intruiging. In all it gets higher marks because it was better than I expected, and didn't get perfect marks because it just didn't have *enough* orignality to make it a GREAT movie. Basically - I'm glad I rented it and didn't spend the $9 to see it in the movies. :)

Summary: Well-Written
Review: The Ring is by far the most well-written crime/horror movie since Stir of Echoes, in the sense of how everything comes together. I have to agree with a few reviewers on how there could have been more chills, but do applaud the movie in its abundance of scares! Even though quite subtle at times, many scenes, like the barn and well, leave you with the most eerie feeling and wanting to leave. The ending is a small let-down however, is perfect in making you scared on how many copies there are going to be. You never know when one might reach you...If you liked this, you'll love Stir of Echoes in how everything is answered. For more great writing of Kruger, see Arlington Road! A MUST FOR INTENSITY!

Summary: Two things I don't know if anyone noticed...
Review: Two things that I think most people missed in their reviews:

First, the Hitchcock element when the main character is taking a shower, alluding to the famous scene in "Psycho". Just as in that movie from 43 years ago, a plot twist was about to happen, and so it is in this movie right after she takes her shower. Kudos to the director for this one!

Second, the "Short Movie" which is supposed to reveal additional secrets about the Ring is to me nothing but the deleted scenes strung together with images from the tape. Seeing these scenes left me with a good understanding as to why they were deleted, and seeing how well the movie holds together, I am glad they were cut.

Not five stars, only because the ending left too much open, though it was better than most that do this. Otherwise a very good, creepy movie, and there are extremely few movies that can do that to me...
