Summary: Poor Quality DVDs
Review: The contrast on the films can be poor. Limited special features not necessarily related to the film on the disk. No way to display the time or what chapter you are watching. It seemed that no effort was taken to ensure a good print was used to master from. Gosh, I wish I had the money I had spent on these discs so I could get decent copies of these movies.

Summary: Madacy - worst DVD producer ever
Review: The editorial review from Amazon.com states, "The prints of the films used in this box set are serviceable and probably comparable to average 16mm classroom or museum presentations." All I can think is that Mr. Keogh is lying or didn't actually watch the discs. The transfers are among the worst ever on DVD, which is typical of all Madacy titles. The films on the discs are unfortunately great - too bad they're unwatchable. Avoid this collection like the plague, and wait for re-releases from reputable distributors.

Summary: good movies, decent video, poor sound quality
Review: The movie's in this series are very good and, in my opinion, worth owning. These early works are in themselves good movies but seeing them after seeing his later works you can see how Hitchcock formulated his ideas and used them again in his later works. The video quality of these movies is watchable but they are not letterboxed. The sound quality on some of them is really poor to the point that I had a hard time understanding some of the dialogue. The special features of the DVD are also not that great (eg. no subtiles)

Review: The warnings given by other reviewers cannot be amplified enough -- I could not play any one of the five disks and had to return the package. For all I know, Madacy just stuck a bunch of blank disks in the package.

Summary: Good films, poor DVD
Review: This DVD set is an insult to the great master like Hitchcook! Madacy should have put more efforts making this DVD set more watachable. DVD collectors are different than normal VHS reviewers. I will never buy any DVD from Madacy ever again! Hope someday, somene like Criterion will remaster these films.

Summary: Suspence and model trains collide in this action thriller
Review: This is a fun, suspenseful, cryptic movie. Eight strangers come together in a dark, creepy house by an English railyard, Three intend to make off with a stolen piece of jewelry.The acting is good and the story advances quickly from murder mystery to thriller. Two segments make this movie worth watching. First there is the empty house. Hitchcock, through slow-moving cameras and great use of lighting, creates a haunting atmosphere and builds nearly unbearable suspense. The second must-see is the final chase scene. Hitchcock uses miniatures to convey most of the action: a train, a bus, a ferry, and even a motorcycle. The expert editing of the scene saves the special effects (which are reminiscent of old Godzilla movies) and makes for great pacing.

Summary: Unsettling espionage thriller
Review: This is an odd Hitchcock film. It has suspense, good dialogue, plenty of action, romance, great camera work- in other words, much of Hitch's technique- but left me with an overall feeling of sadness. This was due in large part to the death of an innocent, which serves as the centerpiece of the film. I believe the movie would have been much more effective had the director found a way to get his point across without gratuitous homicide. (But then again, "Sabotage" derived much of its power and drama from the explosion on the bus which took so many innocent lives.) Secret Agent has much going for it, though. Peter Lorre's performance is excellent, as usual. He adds so much to any film he's in. Several scenes stand out: the sequence in the chocloate factory, the pursuit in the train, etc. I believe it's required viewing for any Hitchcock fan, but is also a bitter pill to swallow. War is hell, terrorism a close second, with espionage following close behind. False identites are just an excuse to act out the darker side- the alter ego- inside of many of us. Watching a film such as this, where one is hard pressed to find a true hero to root for, does not make for a very happy ending. It does make you think, though, about the value of human life, and the suffering that can result from even the smallest mistakes.

Summary: You know you want them all
Review: You can look up the individual reviews. Not as good as his other collections but one should be complete. Of course some individual titles will go out of stock. Others may not be your favorite. However you will have friends and relatives that will want to compare Alfred's various styles. Look for his cameos. A single case makes the movies easier to keep track of and look better on your video storage wall. Being DVDs this is a one-time investment. With the advent of multiple DVD changers you will be able to keep Alfred ready at a moments notice. I tried buying individual as I had the money and found shipping was getting very expensive that way. So bite the bullet and buy the collection. Also check out The Alfred Hitchcock Collection I.
