Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Good, but outdated
Review: The other reviewer is confusing this with one of the many film versions of Faust. This DVD is a black and white film, also released on VHS, of a 1957 production of Charles Gounod's grand French opera based on the first part of Goethe's work. It's a good performance, but is of interest primarily for historical reasons because of the mono sound and primitive filming and recording techniques used.

I have been waiting for years for someone to do a new video/DVD of a current production of Gounod's Faust. It is now about the only standard-repretoire opera I can think of which has not been filmed in recent years. And it's a wonderfully entertaining opera which can be, and often is, done as a major spectacle including the famous Walpurgisnacht ballet sequence. Faust was one of the most popular operas of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and deserves a chance to be rediscovered.

Summary: Woe the movies of are day
Review: This movie, one of the first, still in my opinion to this day remains one of the best. It was a beautifuly enthrolling remake of Goethes Fuast. If your are a movie fan, besides a horror movie fan, you should do your self a favor and watch it. Behold how a master piece should look, yesterday and today.
