Summary: A Performance Which Would Make Gilbert Roll In His Grave
Review: It was difficult for me to enjoy this production for a few reasons.

1. The actors' performances were not convincing at all. They seemed constantly conscious that they were performing a show, rather than interacting with each other. Most of the actors didn't seem to suit their roles. They exaggerated the wrong characteristics. The women whined too much.

2. The updated lyrics bothered me, especially since they had Canadian references which I as an American could not enjoy. Even if I had understood the references, the delivery of them was poor.

3. The sets really bothered me. Too much left to the imagination.

In short, I disliked this performance.

Summary: The Mikado
Review: Most disappointing. I have seen high school productions, and none as bad as this. Mikado should NEVER be "modernized" - American Express has no place in any production of it. It was all just too, too precious for words. Terrible, terrible, terrible.

Review: Sound quality is not good. Play dull and boring. Total waste of money.

Summary: Gilbert and Sullivan -- The Mikado, Pirates of Penzence. Iol
Review: The artistic quality of the performances is quite good. I bought the set of DVDs in order to have the libretto presented as subtitles, which they are not. I could have just as well stuck with my VHS version and saved $50. the technical qulaity is significantly better on the DVE version, however.

Summary: A Great Interpretation of Gilbert and Sullivan!
Review: The Stratford Festival productions are perfect for your collection, as long as you are not a "purist" of G&S. Pooh in Mikado was very well done, even though some fans of G&S have said it was over done. :-) My suggestion is to buy this set as a supplement to an existing collection of G&S videos. I suggest you buy a set that is more strict on their interpretation of G&S before buying this set. But, it really is a good set.

Summary: Delightful
Review: These recording are delightful, and give the feeling of going to an excellent stage production. The only draw backs are the lack of subtitles and monophonic sound. The quality of the sound is quite good with clean high frequencies.
