Rating: Summary: WONDERFUL!!! A MUST SEE MOVIE! YOU HAVE TO LOVE IT! Review: One of the best stage musicals hit the screen and was wonderful. The songs have great "Tradition" and are just wonderful.
Rating: Summary: Highly entertaining with multi-layered meaning Review: This is a most unique musical. Not only does it deliver on the entertainment end with "To Life", "Sunrise, Sunset", and other great songs, it presents a poignant story with many shades of meaning. It can be seen as a sympathetic piece on the sufferings of the Jews, a profound statement on ethnic prejudice, or the struggle to reconcile what is personally essential to the changes that inevitably confront us. And there are probably things that I have missed. All of these painfully human themes are given a loving treatment here without being overly sentimental.
Rating: Summary: A moving performance! Review: A touching film that narrates the life of a small Jewish community in Russia with sensitivity and compassion. This movie is for thoughtful viewers to draw their own conclusions from a factual and unbiased presentation. This is the kind of movie that provokes great after-dinner conversation.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Video! Review: If I were a rich man...I would by all of my family and friends a copy of this movie!
Rating: Summary: A good movie for the entire family to watch. Review: I've watched this movie many, many times over the years and every time I watch it again it just gets better and better.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful movie with a very good transfer Review: The movie itself is a beautiful work about life. The transfer has good video, but only middling sound. There are several poor channel transitions (e.g. pans across the front soundstage). This is part of my permanent collection. Everybody in my family, from my 4 year old to my parents and in-laws love this movie. It's the easiest way to show off the media room for an audience less impressed with technical features (i.e. Starship Troopers DVD) than the quality of the movie experience.
Rating: Summary: A Classic! Review: This is the DVD version of a classic. No need to worry about the fragility of tape. Get the DVD for your library
Rating: Summary: One of my favorite musicals Review: If you like musicals, you'll love Fiddler. It's a story of a Jewish community in Czarist Russia, and their lives and trials told in rich songs: "If I Were a Rich Man," "Sunrise, Sunset," "Tradition," and many more. The story revolves around a peddlar, is wife, and three of their daughters. The matchmaker finds husbands for them, except the daughters have other ideas. The play ends with a sad exodus forced by a pogrom, but the peddlar refuses to give up, and carries on despite it all. END
Rating: Summary: A timeless classic¿and my all-time favorite musical! Review: "Fiddler on the Roof" is my all-time favorite musical, both on the stage and on film. This is a story of tradition, love and marriage in a Jewish family living in the face of persecution in Tsarist Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. Based on the 19th century stories of Sholom Alechem, it tells of how Tevye, a poor Jewish dairyman, Golde, his somewhat shrewish wife, and their five unmarried daughters face their dreams amidst the reality of rampant anti-semitism. Director Norman Jewison's treatment of this story is wonderfully sensitive. The cast - especially Topol as Tevye (nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award for this role) and Norma Crane as Golde - bring to life all the strength of character, the comedy, and the poignant tragedy of life in the village of Anatevka. The music and choreography are sheer magic throughout! "Fiddler on the Roof" is a timeless classic, and should not be missed.
Rating: Summary: An excellent film, except for the cover art Review: I love this movie, but was highly dissaponted with the ugly cover art design. They should have stuck to the original poster art. Anyways, the music is great, and it is good to see such movies being restored on DVD.
