Rating: Summary: I had to force myself to give this ONE star!!!! Review: WOW, I must say that I did not enjoy this production what-so-ever. If i had not seen this play before or had not been involved in musical theatre I may have liked it, but fortunatly I am aware of what a good production of this play is like. I was was a stagehand for community theatre group performing this show. It was also a group of kids aged 14 to 19. They were outstanding. I was mad at myself for not auditioning. This production is awful compared to the community theatre one. I was shocked. Hassalhoff was dreadful. Did he even bother to learn the correct notes and if he did, could he have tried any harder to miss them. Lucy was not so great either. I was wondering why they put someone on there who sounded a lot like Britney Spears. She doesn't have a stage voice. Compare her to Linda Eder. That is pretty self-explanitory. The ensemble had no energy. That is kind of important in theatre. As for the musical numbers: YIKES!!! That wasn't too pleasant. The "Board of Governors" was awful. They went too fast. I couldn't take it in. And there was not enough emotion from Jekyll. "Emma's Reasons" was so fast. She should have taken it slowly instead of going ahead of the music. "No One Knows Who I Am" was nasty. The song is not supposed to be a joke. She is depressed because she is a whore and she can't do anything about it because women didn't mean anything then. "Good 'N' Evil" was way to choppy. I think she either screamed the high not at the end or it was rewriten as a different note. That wasn't to pleasant. "The First Transformation" was kind of strange. I couldn't tell if he was trying to act or have a seizure. Maybe he was doing both at the same time? I didn't even bother watching "Your Work and Nothing More" because I truly love that number and I wasn't pleased with very much of the play so far. "Murder, Murder" was sad because it had NO ENERGY and that is an amazing ensemble song. "Dangerous Game" is a song that has a lot of potential. It was really frightening though. Instead of being sexy it was simply disturbing. The "Confrontation" was really disappointing. It completly floored me. I think it backs up my reason for liking one actor playing Jekyll and Hyde another. I don't want to be so harsh or mean but i am truly shocked at this production. In reality sympathize for the actors. I'm really sorry they had to be viewed like that. It is not completly their fault, a lot of it has to do with the director, producer, musical director, etc. It is always to see a great play be demolished like that.
Rating: Summary: I wonder why this exists as a show Review: The tale seems to be strengthless and meaningless and some main characters just don't know how to ACT and SING.A waste.
Rating: Summary: Hoff is something else Review: I thought nothing could touch this guy live, but this is one amazing show.5 out of 5.
Rating: Summary: The worst performer I have ever seen for Jekyll Review: It is a little disappointing to verify that the DVD lacks many numbers. In addition, the main part is played by a bad actor and a worse singer. COME BACK CUCCIOLLI!!
Rating: Summary: Can things get any slower than this? Review: I loved the CD of this show - I should have stuck with that! This version of the show drags like someone is pulling it up hill and through mollases in February. If you like the music, skip this video and buy the CD!
Rating: Summary: better with a real singer Review: David Hasselhoff was not the right man for this role. I saw this musical with it original cast (wich was very very very very good) and a local playhouse performed this musical (which was also very good). David Hasselhoff can not sing at the broadway level. he can sing pop, but not broadway. He was not able to hit all the notes and left me a little dissipointed about the play. The other actors make up for it. His acting was differnt, I thought it was really good. I gave the video a 2 because of Hasselhoff's not so great singing ability in this role.
Rating: Summary: Superb! Review: By far the best thing about this musical is the manly David Hasselhoff. He captures the duality of the title roles with great aplomb. I have never seen so much aplomb in one actor. And then, of course there is his voice - like a lover's sweet caress for the ballads, like a thrusting member for the tour de force finale. I could not help but become moist.
Rating: Summary: Bring on the DVD's! Review: The only reason I am giving this DVD 4 stars is because truly, the quality of the high-definition filming and sound is superb and I would like to see more live theatre being filmed in this manner!I love this musical and think that it really defines modern musical theatre. However, I agree with most other reviews in that the cast during the time that this production was filmed has a few sore spots in it. Being a Linda Eder fan, I find that our DVD's Lucy is beautiful and has a nice voice, but it lacks maturity and is often reminiscent of a slightly older "Annie". Also her acting is way overboard, she overdoes everything to the point of nausea. She does not come across as believable. David Hasselhoff is of course horrible in the role. His voice is passible but his acting is non-believable as well, although there were a few moments during the transformation scene that I enjoyed and could forget about who I was seeing. Emma however, is wonderful and the supporting cast of townspeople, showgirls, etc. really keeps the show afloat! The sets/lighting and music are outstanding and as I said, the quality of the filming is superb. I hope to see more of Broadway being filmed in this manner, that is why I urge you to add this to your Broadway DVD library, even if the casting is not as great as it could be on this one.
Rating: Summary: Why did Hasselhoff Get this Role? Review: In case you haven't noticed a pattern in most of the other reviews, almost everyone hates Hasselhoff's portrayel of Jekyll and Hyde. This recording is worth something for the other actors and the technical aspects, but don't watch it and then believe you have seen a true performance of Jekyll and Hyde. Buy either the Concept Album or the Original Broadway Cast Album and hear what this show should really sound like. Even if I did not appreciate Hasselhoff's performances in Knight Rider and Baywatch, I could at least respect them. This was inexcusable.
Rating: Summary: Give me Sebastian Bach! Review: David Hasselhoff.... Oh my god... Could they have picked someone LESS talented to play Jekyll & Hyde?? David, your resume did not benefit from your performance.. ugh.. Someone I would have liked to see in this filmed version of the show would have been Sebastian Bach, a rocker from the early 90's, who took on the role on Broadway back in 1998 or so, and who, I've heard, did an amazing job. I love the entire cast featured on the Broadway cast version of the CD, mainly Linda Eder, who I love, but for something a bit different, instead of hearing Broadway trained actors playing Jekyll & Hyde (such as Anthony Warlow, Chuck Wagner and Bob Cuccioli), it would have been nice to hear someone who could really hit those high notes with some attitude! Anyway, just to warn those of you who are planning on purchasing this joke of a DVD, beware. You'd be better off renting it if anything else, and even then, you'll know why I'm giving it one star.
