Summary: Come what may....
Review: ...I will love this film until my dying day. Moulin Rouge is well deserving of it's 8 Oscar nominations and it should have been nominated for at least 2 more: Baz Lurhmann as Best Director and Ewan McGregor as Best Actor. This beautiful film didn't direct itself and McGregor's subtly stunning performance is absolutely the heart of it. Not that Ms Kidman doesn't deserve her accolades but like she said in her Golden Globes acceptance speech "Work with him. He makes you better".

The two make a very convincing couple and one could easily see why the naive poet would fall so quickly for a lovely courtesan and why the cynical courtesan would be won over by and fall so deeply for the young poet's earnest and passionate love. They both look breathtakingly gorgeous(and to contradict the person who called them digitally enhanced, she's really THAT fair and Ewan's eyes are really THAT blue)

The film shifts easily from tragedy to comedy and back and forth again. Although the plot is simple, as most myths are on the surface(it is based on the Orphean myth), it reveals deep human truths and does so in a colorful, exciting way. There is a lot of symbolism revealed in the visuals and how the scenes are set up. Two interesting motifs are found in the way McGregor's Christian and Kidman's Satine are often framed; he looking out of his window and she gazing into her mirror.

The music is really used in an imaginative manner, especially on the Love Medley. Nicole's voice is fragile and lovely and does a fine job of conveying her character's soul, while Ewan's powerful and enthusiastic voice does the same for Christian.

This isn't even taking into account Jim Broadbent's portrayal of Harold Zeigler, the King of the Moulin Rouge underworld, Richard Roxburgh as the "evil" Duke or John Leguizamo as Toulouse-Lautrec, whom some might say was over-the-top but really this just increased the character's poignancy as you see how desperately he wants the kind which Satine and Christian have.

A wonderful, unique film all around. To paraphrase a line Christian says to Satine early in the film, what has been created is quite modern and might feel a little uncomfortable at first but if you're open, you might enjoy it.

Summary: ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES EVER MADE!
Review: I am shocked to see these negative reviews in here. It is not deserving the negative reviews at all.

Summary: Absolutely gorgeous.
Review: The classic love story, translated into a beautifully pieced together musical depicting the relationship between the mysterious dancer at a night club who dreams of being an actress, Satine, and the innocent and amply talented writer, Christian.

The music itself was brilliant, but the plot it enhances is even more genius.

Summary: Great Comedy, Drama, and Music!
Review: It's good we all like different things, or the world would be really boring, but can't we at least recognize a great talent when we see it? I'm amazed, it seems people either love or hate Moulin Rouge. I'm glad I'm not an actor, because I don't think I could handle the constant criticism and rejection. I think if you've only seen MR once you need to watch the entire 2 disc DVD, it is wonderful and eye-opening. To one of the reviewers, the movie opens with Ewan McGregor(Christian)typing his and Nicole Kidman's(Satine) story.( the typewriter does not type by itself). It isn't Christian that falls through the floor, it is the unconscious Argentinian, who has Narcolepspy. The movie is frenetic, especially the beginning. Baz is trying to give you a feel for the time and place, which if you knew anything about the real Monmarte and the Moulin Rouge, you would know it was filled with prostitutes, artists, musicians, pantiless can-can dancers, and opium dens. There were also few choices for women unless they were from high-class and, or wealth. We are also spoiled by acsess to the many medicines and available medical treatments of our era. In 1899 there was no treatment for TB, with the exception of morphine for pain, and although the movie is partly fantasy, the symptoms Satine experienced were very realistic. The director only has approx. 2 hrs. to tell a story. You have to watch the entire DVD to see the incredible amt.of work and talent that culminated into a feast for the eyes and ears. It is amazing to see all that was involved in the making of MR, Baz Luhrman is a true visionary! The attention to detail of the sets and costumes was extraordinary! There were many award worthy performances this past year, but none so bold as Ewan's Christian and Nicole'Satine. They both demonstrated a natural talent for comedy and drama. They have beautiful voices and an intense emotional depth that bring me to tears each time I watch it.It is a dazzling mix of comedic and tragic character, brought to life with a tribute to carefully picked, familiar songs, we all know and love, that are a part of the dialogue. Come What May is an original song. Nature Boy was written in the 30's. It dosen't matter when a song was written, but what the words say to us. If you love old Hollywood musicals, you'll love the huge productions in MR.Watch the DVD for the first time or give it another try.It is bold, romantic, tragic, remarkably imaginative, in other words, magical! Many exceptional movies were made last year, with many fine performamces, but MR is the only movie that has it all, great comedy, drama, and beautiful singing and dancing. The entire cast and crew did an incredible 4 yrs. of work! You've never heard Like A Virgin sound so good!

Summary: A movie for the intelligent and romantic!
Review: If you are moved by music, then this movie will move you! It is gorgeous, visually stimulating from every direction, and the acting is superb. I was completely floored by the amazing voice coming out of Ewan McGregor, and pleasantly surprised by Nicole Kidman singing ability. The chemistry between them is incredible. The story is stage worthy. This could be the next CATS on stage! I purchased this dvd, and downloaded the soundtrack. It's a beautiful picture for the intelligent and romantic at heart. One of my favorite movies of all time!

Summary: "Love... and be loved in return."
Review: With my somewhat... shall we say... conservative... tastes in movies and books, it came as somewhat of a surprise to me the other day that I would even consider sitting down and watching "Moulin Rouge", that 2001 Baz Luhrmann film about 1899 Paris, starring Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor, and a cast of lesser known but very talented actors, singers, and dancers.

What came as even a bigger surprise to me is that I liked it. I liked it a lot.

That's not to say that "Moulin Rouge" didn't take a bit of getting used to. Five minutes into the film and I felt my senses being bombarded with frenetic, over-the-top, somewhat hard to follow (and swallow) scenes. But somehow, through it all, I was able to follow what turns out to be a very simple story line: two men (one a decent, hard-working, poverty stricken writer, and the other a rich, evil, domineering duke) compete for the affections of the most beautiful woman (a courtesan at the Moulin Rouge, Paris' most decadent and popular show club.) Poor, good man wins girl's heart; evil rich guy becomes insanely jealous and threatens to close down club if girl doesn't become his; girl is forced to become rich man's lover; Poor, good man becomes despondent... et cetera... et cetera...

The story may be familiar to most of us, but the way it's told is certainly the most original I've ever seen. Every seen is garishly colorful, set at a dizzyingly fast pace, and filled with delightful cartoon-like characters and contrivances. The acting is above average in most cases, and, in the case of Kidman and McGregor, much more than that.

"Moulin Rouge" is filled with wonderfully produced music. Most of the score is comprised of pop tunes from the 1970s through the 1990s, so there's not much originality there. But the song selection is nearly perfect for the story. Each song is specifically designed to enhance a particular scene, and does so with precision and beauty. Both Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor are very good indeed at singing their own songs.

THE DVD: is excellent, and gives viewers plenty of "bang for the buck!" This is a two disc package, the first containing the film and a few "extras," and the second containing several hours of bonus material. An audio CD sampler is also included. Video and audio quality for all features are first rate all the way.

MY VERDICT: Much to my surprise and delight I found "Moulin Rouge" a wonderful two hours of entertainment. The story line isn't much, but the acting, the energy, the fast pace, and the wildly colorful sets and costumes, and the music make this a film well worth seeing.

Summary: What a Terrible film...
Review: Every once in a while I watch a movie that leaves me feeling I have just wasted 2 hours of my precious life for nothing, and Moulin Rouge is one of those movies.

I just can understand what the fuss is about this flick...it's a total mess. nothing more then a overly long pop culture MTV music video

I consider my self a movie buff, I have a long list of favorite films that are, according to friends, "artsy and un-watchable". even with my love for "strange" artistically motivated film I could not see anything in Moulin Rouge.

It's edited & filmed at an annoying pace, has little plot, little artistic impression, and the songs were, at most times, unbearable.

Remember: You only have one life to live! don't waist you time watching horrible movies like this :-)

Summary: Brilliant and Surprising
Review: I was anxious to see this movie, because Luhrman's Romeo & Juliet was simply stunning, but I was a bit skeptical at the casting of Ewan McGregor as Christian. I suspected that Nicole Kidman would be fantastic, but did not have such high hopes for Ewan. Surprisingly, I thought they were both fantastic. They both demonstrate unbelievable range as actors. The first 15 minutes of the movie are a bit jarring. You really need to see the movie more than once to appreciate/assimilate it all. But once the "story" begins, the movie flows like silk. The only exception is one scene where Nicole Kidman is faking sexual attraction for Christian (who she believes is the Duke) while he reads poetry to her -- STINKY! But otherwise, the movie is absolutely fantastic. One of the best scenes is where the song "Roxanne" is performed -- really cool and visually stunning. A definite must-own.
