Rating: Summary: People need to lighten up... Review: One reason movies are made is to help people escape their own lives. If you want to see Moulin Rouge for historical pursuits you've come to the wrong place. Some of the reviewers on this DVD need to lighten up and take the movie for what it is...a fantasy.I for one appreciate the use of songs from different eras for the purposes of story telling. This is a rich and wonderful film. But judge for yourself.
Rating: Summary: Endlessly irritating Review: Yes, "Moulin Rouge" is a technically daring movie. But it is also one of the most irritating movies of all time. The director Baz Luhrmann rarely keeps his camera focused for more than a split second on any actor in this movie. Everytime you want to get a good look at the actor's face and expressions, Luhrmann purposely swings the camera away from the actor. It makes for a very cold and distant presentation of the story. And the songs are often screamed (rather than sung) in an annoying high pitch. This becomes grating, even repulsive to hear. I think Baz Luhrmann has appeared on every entertainment news show on television praising the "artistry" of his own movie. That kind of vanity just adds to the general distastefulness of this movie. Getting a root canal is a less painful experience than seeing and listening to this in-your-face, over-the-top, and reveling-in-its-own-excess shipwreck of a movie. And when I say "shipwreck", I'm talking the Titanic.
Rating: Summary: A spunky, beautiful "sister" to Romeo + Juliet '96 Review: I'd been a HUGE fan of Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet in 1996 but did not think to see this movie until it grabbed the attention of the Academy and Golden Globes. I suppose being used to his style made it easier for me to fall in love with the film, viewers seem to either love it fiercely or hate it with a passion. As others have mentioned, the story is simple yet touching. The score is amazingly blended into the film's musical numbers and it's nearly impossible not to find yourself singing along in your repeat viewings. Watch out for Ewan McGregor's sudden outbursts of song, they're beautiful and breathtaking. He plays his role exceptionally well, his face perfectly capturing that of the innocent man untouched by the cruel machinations of Love. I was *very* surprised with his singing ability. Nicole Kidman is even better. I was shocked at how stunningly beautiful she is. I could have lived with fewer poodle yips from her, but other than that I thought she was amazing, I now have a new favorite for Best Actress when March 24 comes around! I will be sure to buy this, I have a feeling I won't get tired of it...
Rating: Summary: One Of The WOrst Movies I Have EVER seen Review: I have never reviewed a movie before, but if i can save someone from seeing this god awful movie, then it is worth it. I was cringing in pain watching it, Baz Luhrmann should apologize to everyone who saw it, personally. Made me wanna give Battlefield Earth another chance, for your own sake, stay away from it.
Rating: Summary: A Great Musical Review: Moulin Rouge is an excellent movie if, and only if, you enjoy musicals and love stories. While the songs were all redone, the way they were sang was great, and I feel that this is one of the best muscials. Moulin Rouge is a movie that you must see twice to really love. After the first time I saw it I didn't really like it, but after the second, I thought it was amazing. Do yourself a favor, watch it twice before you decide weather or not to like it.
Rating: Summary: Haters just don't get it... Review: The reviewers who slam this pic are soulmates with the film's own character of The Duke - they just can't see beyond the tips of their noses. If you want your movies nice and vanilla, stay away. If you'd rather see another version of the same old same old, stay away. If you can't keep two thoughts running in your head at the same time, stay away. Otherwise, welcome to the Moulin Rouge - this year's only Oscar film to actually reinvent the idea of movie making.
Rating: Summary: Some people just don't get it... great movie! Review: If you watch Moulin Rouge expecting to see a cross between Showgirls and the MTV video awards, you are not going to like this picture. If you love pop culture, the American Movie Musical, and can suspend your disbelief for long enough to indulge yourself in a visual and auditory feast... you'll love Moulin Rouge... with its references and nods to silent film, classic stage productions of the 1930's and 40's, and homages to over 200 years of vaudeville and dance hall theatre. This is a modern spin on the story of 'the hooker with a heart of gold' story that has been so bungled in films like 'Pretty Woman.' The lush sets are nothing short of amazing. The visual effects are astounding. The music is wonderful. Thank God there's someone besides Disney making movie musicals again. The actors voices are great... very unexpected by such well known film stars. Nicole is beautiful; Ewan is a cutie... Why didn't other folks like this film? I don't know... keep them away from the DVD player while this movie is on.
Rating: Summary: A Beautifully Done Fantasy Review: I was captivated by this offbeat production. The production was stunning and the musical collage was perfect. I loved the voices, delivery, costuming and scenery. The technical quality of the DVD is as good as it gets. Ok, so Puccini's version of La Boheme was better - this is still excellent.
Rating: Summary: Moulin Rouge is my favorite movie of ALL TIME! Review: Try to ignore what the critics are saying. Moulin Rouge is an excellent movie. I have heard it called "sappy" and corny". Have we all become so jaded that we hate anything happy or about love? A movie doesn't have to be dark, or tormented to be good. Moulin Rouge is romantic, exiting, and tragic. It was like a catharsis for me- I laughed, I cried, I sang along. The DVD is especially great. It's so fun to get a peek behing the scenes and hear what the people behid the movie think about it. First of all, Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman have such chemistry. McGregor is completely endearing, and has a great voice. I was so impressed! Nicole Kidman is beautiful, seductive, glamourous. They make an incredible on-screen pair. The sets, costumes, and make-up are lavish and extravagent. The one thing I will say, is that, especially at the beginning, it moves way to fast. Some parts, especially the "club" scenes will almost make you dizzy. But hang in there- it slows down about one third through the movie, and then it moves just beautifully. Now- about the music. Here's how I see it: We all have sound- tracks to our lives. A certain song may bring back memories of a person, or a time in your life: your childhood, your first kiss, high-school friends, and college. That's the beauty of the music in Moulin Rouge. It uses music that we may already indentify with, then re-vamps it to fit the movie. Yes- most of it is not original, but it is so changed that it is like a new score. Take for example the tango version of "Roxanne" used in the movie: they have the same tune, but are NOT the same song, at all. The love medley makes me smile. It sounds like something I have heard my dad sing to my mom. Some people may be afraid of it because it's different, but I love it for that reason. It's romantic, quirky, and expressive. It's a whirling, twirling, colorful mix of times, and places, yet it all blends together so smoothly. Half of the people who give it bad reveiws didn't even watch the whole thing. The second half is the best part! Give it a chance, and view it with an open mind. My bet is, you'll like what you see It deservess to win best picture! I LOVE MOULIN ROUGE!
Rating: Summary: BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!!!! Review: This movie will change your life. I suggest you stop reading this and buy it. Lol. Ewan McGregor is amazing, amazing isn't even the word-stunning, magnificent, superlative, "incandiferous" as well as Nicole Kidman. Both sing so beautifully it will take your breath away. This movie is without a doubt in my mind, the best film ever written, acted, & directed. Its so visually stunning you can't breathe until it lets you go. As many times as I see it, I feel like I haven't seen everything there is to see, and I just want to watch it again until I catch every thing.
