Summary: Beautiful and funny!
Review: Fiddler is a beautiful musical about the life in a Russian Jewish village in the early 20th. century. It particularly follows the life of Tevye, the dairyman, a very smart and funny character, and through him we see the rest of the village and that time's situation for the Jewish people. The music is great... this is one movie to own and watch over and over!

Summary: tradition
Review: "Life without tradition would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof," announces the milkman Tevye. It is this battle to preserve his beloved Jewish traditions that befuddles Tevye, as he faces a changing world and the daunting prospect of marrying off his strong-willed daughters with no dowry to offer as inducement. Topol who embraces the character Tevye like a child to its mother. His monologues with God ("I know we are the chosen ones, but once in a while can't you choose somebody else?"). To his exasperated externalized dilemmas ("on the one hand...but on the other hand"), they provide the comedy relief of this serious play. From his world-weary fear of change, to his joyous dreams of plenty, Topol gives an exuberant and memorable performance. As he marries off his daughters, Tevye comes to see the traditions he so lovingly embraces not as a mountain range, immovable and immutable, but as a river, ever flowing and changing with the landscape. However, even the enlightened Tevye must draw the line somewhere, and when his third daughter wants to marry a Russian, one of those who are performing pogroms on his people, he can no longer go with the flow.

Summary: A timeless classic¿and my all-time favorite musical!
Review: "Fiddler on the Roof" is my all-time favorite musical, both on the stage and on film. This is a story of tradition, love and marriage in a Jewish family living in the face of persecution in Tsarist Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. Based on the 19th century stories of Sholom Alechem, it tells of how Tevye, a poor Jewish dairyman, Golde, his somewhat shrewish wife, and their five unmarried daughters face their dreams amidst the reality of rampant anti-semitism. Director Norman Jewison's treatment of this story is wonderfully sensitive. The cast - especially Topol as Tevye (nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award for this role) and Norma Crane as Golde - bring to life all the strength of character, the comedy, and the poignant tragedy of life in the village of Anatevka. The music and choreography are sheer magic throughout! "Fiddler on the Roof" is a timeless classic, and should not be missed.

Summary: Very well done
Review: I have always had a special fondness for Fiddler on the Roof. What an exceptional story! Tevya is outstanding in it.

As for the quality of the DVD, it thought it was very good. I wouldn't go as far as to give it an excellent, but certainly worth the price of the DVD.

Summary: A Very Moving and Glorious Film
Review: Fiddler on the Roof has always been one of my favorite movies. Both the acting and the music are terrific. At first I wasn't sure I wanted to buy it on DVD because I already had it on VHS. But after renting it and seeing how beautiful it was in all it's digital splendor, I knew I had to buy it. When I first heard about the running commentary by Norman Jewison and Topol I really wondered why anyone would want to hear such a thing while watching a movie. However, I found that it really added to my enjoyment. Hearing the thoughts of the director and the lead character about the making of the movie provided great insight. It wasn't distracting like I thought it would be. Even hearing the commentary, I still cried when they sang "Sunrise Sunset." I am glad this was put on DVD. It really is a wonderful film.

Summary: Excellent film, but poor transfer on DVD
Review: I have seen this film on TV many times and I enjoyed it very much, so I expected it to be fantastic on DVD but it's not the case, I'm very disapointed. The images are beautifull but the tranfer to DVD is very poor. It's like watching an old DOS game on a Commodore VIC 20. Full of "staircase" all along the film, sometimes like watching through a "moustiquaire". If I can give my advice, do not buy "Fiddler on the Roof" on DVD format, it's very bad.

Summary: Fiddler On The Roof
Review: The music and songs are moving and memorable! The acting superb! Definately a keeper. One to watch with the whole family. Tevye and his family represent the typical Russian Jews of the time. Along with heartache and happiness comes the passing of old ways and the emergence of a new world. Topol's character, Tevye, resists the changes as much as he can but in the end while his small corner of the world crashes down around him he begins to realize that tradtions did not keep them untouched from the sweeping changes that came with the dawning of the Russian Revolution.

Summary: Oscar Film!
Review: I consider that this film must won an Oscar Prize. It is fascinating with regards to: - Music - Actor (The father) - The dances I have seen this film many times and every time I shiver when I see it. It's so meaningful. It's not only a question of Jews and Russains. It's a social problem that may occur in family whether they are eastern or western families. Marriage of girls all over the world is a problem and parents are always after marrying their daughters and don't worry that much about son's marriage. It also deal with parents' love, money problem and how in some countries marrying young to old rich men seems to be solving poverty problem regardless of happiness or unhapinness of marriage itself. It also deals with Jews versus Russians an item that I am not up to discuss. But in my humble knowledge it deals with misery that happened to the jews.
