Rating: Summary: MARSHALL ROCKS CHICAGO!!!!!! Review: "This is a story of Murder, Greed, Corruption, Violence, Exploitation, Adultery and Treachery." Indeed "Chicago" is not a film for the kiddies! Set in 1920's "Chicago," this dark Cook County comedy is clever, cunning and very sexy. The costumes are beautiful. The score is divine. The dancers are totally amazing. The leads may be from Hollywood, but the director chose to paint in the details with the finest talent Broadway has to offer. Rob Marshall looted the often untapped treasure chest of Broadway to assemble and ensemble of incredible talent and beauty. Miracle working brought this film to fruition. "Chicago the movie" truly surprised me. It is just about as grand as I dreamed it could be. It could have gone the other way easily, if it had been poorly transformed from the stage to film. I was somewhat skeptical. Having sat through the Broadway version many, many times, in the Orchestra at the Shubert, I was eagerly anticipating the final outcome of Marshall's film version attempt -- crossing my fingers - hoping that the film would do the show justice. When I saw the film I was simply blown away with his choices. The entire audience was cheering, laughing, and clapping throughout the entire screening. Now imagine, this is in Hollywood -- the land of the incredibly unimpressed and jaded - so the clapping and cheering in the theater was truly remarkable! The 1997 Broadway revival was fun and sexy -- the songs of Fred Ebb and John Kander, so brilliantly painted twenty years earlier for the original "Chicago" run, seemed to hold a deeper, more timely meaning for 1990's (post-O.J. Trail) audiences -- I was wishing for a great film version of "Chicago" to manifest itself one day. The revival of "Chicago" was presented as a concert version, sans the period costumes and elaborate sets. Broadway's Tony Award winning "Velma Kelly" was Bebe Neuwirth. Neuwirth illuminated the Shubert nightly, with her electric stage presence and dead-on comedic timing. The Broadway revival of "Chicago" ran away with a slew of Tony Awards including "Best Musical Revival." The stage play's appeal and charm carried through to the filmed version. In the filmed version, Rob Marshall has done well by hand selecting so many of Broadway's finest dancers and crew members. It shows in the details. All of the dancers in "Cell Block Tango" are Broadway stalwarts -- the best chorines of the Great White Way (with the exception of bizarre casting choice Mya). Mya appears a bit out of her league. Unfortunately it shows in her line delivery and lack of expression. By stark contrast, Queen Latifa is stellar as "Mama Morton"! I love her magnetic screen presence. Denise Faye's memorable monologue ("six") is a heated inferno of sexxx in the "Cell Block. . ." As for the other gypsies, Susan Meisner is a standout as is the always expressive, firecracker: Mary Ann Lamb. The singing and dancing of Renée Zellweger is remarkable. WOW! Congratulations to all. Richard Gere turns in a grand performance as the quick and slick lawyer "Billy Flynn." And as for Catherine Zeta Jones she plays a fabulously sexy and smart "Velma Kelly" with face -- oh that face! As "Norma Desmond" once said, "We didn't need dialogue. We had FACES then." Expressive faces are rare today. Catherine Zeta Jones has this down. Congratulations to her. "Chicago-The Movie" is great fun! Kudos to the entire cast and crew.
