Rating: Summary: Save your money! Review: This DVD was a real disappointment. It failed on all levels. Musically, it was mostly deriviative, as a drama it was poorly motivated, failing even at being a send up of its own genre. It went on and on without developing interest or character, leaving this audience member bored and disinterested.
Rating: Summary: Mature, Thought provoking, With an edge Review: This wasn't a DVD I had planned on owning much less watching, but I admit I love the movie. The pace is fast which makes the movie a joy to watch, since it holds the viewers attention. The underlining theme of a lazy media that thrives on scandal, as well as the Lawyer for hire at the highest price are timeless, with a mix of lost souls and theatrics is wonderful. I also like the array of actors used as well as the costumes and choreography which Bob Fosse would have applauded. And yes I LOVED the fact that Queen Latifah ... Matron 'Mama' Morton was given a serious role and not some dang stereotypical hooker role! What a lot of one star, negative reviewers seem to be missing is the historical aspect of Chicago in the 20's. Come on be honest, was there much virtue in the era of "Scarface" Al Capone? Maybe people need a lesson in history? And then there is the "hair" theme, where Roxy as well as Velma have their hair styles, much like todays stars, copied by women. Reminds me of "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" which was F. Scott Fitzgerald's fourth Saturday Evening Post story on May 1, 1920. Anyone who has ever been involved with a trial will appreciate the scene where Roxy insists she will NOT wear a plain Jane dress, but soon changes her mind when she sees the coffin of a young woman who was hanged, being wheeled away, because the young woman couldn't afford a good lawyer and thus lost her case. Miss Manners aka Judith Martin has even written pieces on the "Proper Dress Essential for First Felony Trial".
Rating: Summary: Overrated Review: Why this movie got such great reviews is a mystery to me. it was okay, but not half as good as all the hype suggested -- and not nearly as creative as "Moulin Rouge" was a year or so earlier. And yet that wonderfully imaginitive movie has the bad reputation, while this middle of the road movie had people falling over themselves in search of ever higher praise. Bland movies are popular in "exciting" times, I guess...
Rating: Summary: Over-hyped, Overblown, Overrated Review: This movie narrowly beat out "About Schmidt" for the poorest excuse for entertainment I have experienced this year. Cynicism and satire have saturated Hollywood and a sane person can only take so much. The costumes and choreography were not bad, but the acting and singing were sub-par (save for Queen Latifah's sterling performance). Obviously, I am in the minority for disliking this movie, but it was just not my cup of tea. In the future I will use a little more discretion in renting moview that the critics and the Academy rave over.
Rating: Summary: Unwatchable Review: I have to admit - I couldn't sit through the whole thing. We skipped through the middle and most of the musical numbers (most of which were terrible). Since there were no "good guys" in this movie, I just hoped that justice would prevail. It didn't. Just a bunch of rotten folks ruining their lives and taking others and singing up a storm about it. The only one in this movie who can really sing is Queen Latifah, and her talent was wasted in this film. And the acting - AWFUL! So amateurish and over-the-top. It was like watching a macabre human cartoon. I am both amazed and utterly disappointed that a film like this could win an Oscar.
Rating: Summary: worst movie ever Review: This movie was so awful it made no since. Everyone I was watching it with had no clue what was going on. We thought it would be better because we had watched Moulin Rouge and thought it was an awesome movie. We asumed with so many well known actors playing in the movie it couldn't be a dud but it was, so I would not recommend this movie to anyone unless you were bored out of your mind.
Rating: Summary: i am aware everyone will make fun of me BUT: Review: my take on chicago is an extreme one, and i know everyone will say, hey youre stupid, and you dont have "CLASS" (if you'll excuse the pun) but i will say it anyway because i need to get it out of my system. this film creates a stunning visual and musical facade in order to mask the fact that you dont care about the characters because theyre all terrible people, and the one character with a good heart gets viewed as though he is invisible(though in the movie its meant to be funny). it then says, hey look at these people. they get what they want through murder, deceit, and lies. isnt that sexy? isnt that attractive? dont you want to be just like them? and hey look at this nice man, he is fat and ugly, lets pretend he doesnt exist and make his life miserable. and the media in the film is a direct reflection of the media in real life, covering all the bad news rather than trying to focus on something a little more pleasant or positive. since i have seen the nature of some reviews on this website, i ask that please, even if you disagree with my opinion, do not attempt to trash my personality because that is just rude.
Rating: Summary: Rating CHICAGO and All That Jazz Review: Since when did a movie with award for Best Picture become the worst movie ever? And also, since when did a musical have to be delightfully cheerful? CHICAGO is a powerful twisted musical featuring Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Richard Gere. The story is- Roxie Hart (Zellweger) goes to jail, meets Velma Kelly, who is a famous showgirl/murderer. Then with lawyer Billy Flynn (Gere), she turns into this blonde sweetheart as she starts covering the media. Hey, people are even buying her hairstyle! Great songs and great actors. I thought Queen Latifah was perfect singing "When You're Good to Mama". I liked Chita Rivera's singing of "All That Jazz" (not in the movie) better than Zeta-Jones, but I thought Renee would be perfect to play a cutsy-shootsy clueless blondie. And Richard Gere... could he really tap-dance? The DVD, if you haven't heard, includes "Class", a song that was cut out from the movie, sung by Queen Latifah and Zeta-Jones. It's a great movie, great musical, and an even better way to love/hate Chicago. And to all you haters out there, you're wrong. Absolutely wrong.
Rating: Summary: Rating the DVD and all that Jazz Review: I don't know why people say some people said CHICAGO was a bad movie. Heck, tons of people hated TITANIC as well. The musical's three main characters- Roxie Hart (Renee Zellweger), Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones), and Billy Flynn (Richard Gere) create a pleasingly outrageous musical set in the city of- where else, CHICAGO! It revolves around blonde sweetheart Roxie as she dreams of fame. In fact, most of the singing and dancing is in her vacuous head. She goes to jail for murder and meets famous showgirl Velma Kelly. Lawyer Billy Flynn takes her and creates a media blitz out of it. Other stuff too that was good, but this is pretty much the gist of it. For SOME people, I wouldn't qualify Best Picture of the Year as the worst movie ever. CHICAGO is powerful, twisted, and... awesome. I liked the performance of Queen Latifah in "When You're Good to Mama" and the first few minutes of it when Zeta-Jones breaks out into "All That Jazz". And if you've heard, the DVD version includes "Class", a song by Queen Latifah and Zeta-Jones that was cut from the movie version. BUY IT, BUY IT!
Rating: Summary: God Almighty! Review: I cannot begin to say how much this movie (...)! There was no point of it. I had heard so many people rave about this stupid movie and so I of course, was so golly gee happy to watch it. But my god, it was horrible. It just dragged on and on, and seemed to have no point. The dancing wasn't dancing. If you're a dancer who appreciates real dancing and real singing try some other musical cause this one just isn't it. It just showed lots of skin, and they walked around. The only good thing I liked about this movie is a few songs, but mostly b/c they got drilled into my brain. I see no reason why this movie would have won Best Picture at the Oscars. I wish that some other movie besides this one had won.
