Rating: Summary: Wow Review: What a great musical comedy drama thingy...it had a little of everthing..and I loved it...seen it twice and I'll be back (good thing I work at the theatre or I'd be broke)
Rating: Summary: AWESOME! Review: I went into this movie knowing you have to forget about "reality" and suspend yourself in the experience. I laughed and cried and loved it. The music was used wonderfully, and the actors - all of them - were outstanding. Ewan McGregor is extremely talented, and I am now going back to the stores to find his other work. The singing was great - and it was like seeing "Strictly Ballroom" again.
Rating: Summary: The great, the bad and the strange Review: All of the "Love" songs were delightfully sung and fun. Cinematography was often dizzying. At times the film was like a trip back to the acid-tripping 70s. Weird. Moments of greatness mixed with tediously dizzying camera work. If you love Nicole Kidman, you'll love it. She's beautiful and charming. As Satine, she sings quite well,(sounding something like Helen Reddy)even though she's in the throes of TB. Jim Broadbent and John Leguizamo were engaging and quite believable.Generally, a strange creative attempt. But I do admire Baz Luhrman for trying to bring his vision to life.
Rating: Summary: They don't make movies like this anymore! Review: Since the majority of the reviews here are saying over and over what the story is about, I won't go into that, since you probably already know by know what it's about. So I'll just talk about whether the movie was worth it or not. This is by far the best movie of 2001. Moulin Rouge has some of the freshest-looking visuals to appear on the big screen in ages. If you love musicals you absolutely MUST see this movie on the big screen at all costs! Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman have amazing chemistry onscreen, and they both do an excellent job with the singing, with Ewan stealing the movie with his singing voice. Thankfully the soundtrack has all the songs they sang in the movie, and really is the only reason to buy the cd, NOT for the song Lady Marmalade, which is very over-rated, with a horrible video to go with it. Getting back to the movie, it's definitely one that requires at least two viewings, since the first fifteen minutes come at you so quickly that it's almost too much to take in at one viewing. Watching this movie is defintely like a sugar/caffeine high, and equally as sweet. Nicole Kidman has never looked better, and Ewan McGregor was brilliantly cast as the romantic realist. You can't help but become totally absorbed in both these characters and become swept away with the uncomplicated but classic story of how powerful and all-consuming love can be. The fact that Baz Lurhman chose to take pop music songs from the 70s to the 90s and have them sung as if they were showtunes was a stroke of genius, and only shows the imagination and creativity put into this production. All of the songs totally work, and help propel the movie along, instead of just being background songs for a soundtrack cd. They just don't make movie musicals like this anymore. Anyone who hates this movie is not a TRUE movie lover.
Rating: Summary: Take a chance here ! Review: A fantastic piece of work, like nothing you've seen before . It's frenetic , kinetic rollecoaster style is breathtaking. The performances are all wonderful . This is the best work from Ewan McGregor since Shallow Grave & Life Less Ordinary & Nicole Kidman is every bit his equal. Their voices are perfect for the roles . I've heard more than 1 person say they were warned to stay away . I'll warn you this film is meant for the big screen. Well, judge for yourself, they are not you . You will Love this or hate it, there is not alot of middle ground here . I hope you love it as I did. if not, at least someone else didn't make up your mind for you !

Rating: Summary: Moulin Rouge Review: I went into this movie with some apprehension. I left the theater counting the days til the DVD release. The musical is not dead. I really didn't believe that "modern" music would work in a movie set in 1900 and that it would be at best tacky. I was definitely wrong. A well done story, well told. The cinematography and music and acting were all top notch.
Rating: Summary: Pure torture! Review: I went into this film expecting to see exciting production numbers, great chemistry between the characters, and non-stop "eye candy". The overly-frenetic style of the editing spoiled all of that to a major extent. Even the opening number, a creative melding of the songs "Lady Marmalade" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" had the camera whizzing around much too rapidly for it to be enjoyable. The plot was choppy and just plain silly. The character development was non-existant. The volume on the dialogue was often too soft, and the volume on the songs was often painfully loud.Ugh! Sheer torture! If I hadn't gone with someone I would have walked out 10-20 minutes into the film. I sent an e-mail panning this movie to my friends, and I got back two immediate responses that they, too, wanted to leave early but sat through the entire horrid mess.
