Summary: Moulin Rouge as Gilbert and Sullivan would have liked it
Review: One of the most different, unnerving and yet fabulous shows of all time. A spectacular display of costuming, choreography and opulent scenery is flashed at the moviegoer in a strobelight effect never seen by this reviewer outside of MTV. The scenes are chopped up and thrown at you, bit by bit, which makes for a totally unique experience. A visual feast. A rollercoaster of a ride. The musical numbers are so out of sync with the era and the emotional context of the scenes that it makes it delightfully reminiscent of Gilbert and Sullivan.

Summary: A Disappoinment!
Review: When I bought the ticket for this movie, I thought it was a remake of the old movie based on the life of Toulouse-Lautrec. I expected to see some semblance of reality. This movie was trash-a mere vehicle for a lot of trashy rock music. The only thing good about it was the beautiful Nicole Kidman. The farcical treatment was absurd. It was hard to take it seriously because of all the silly musical bits. This was nothing like what Paris looks like. A ridicuous elephant draped in front of the Moulin Rouge? Seriously, save yourself money or buy a movie that's worth the viewing.

Summary: Gloriously different!
Review: Don't miss this movie! Baz Luhrmann's vision is different than any other director's. In the same way that Tim Burton's movies all have something distinctly Burton about them, Luhrmann seems to infuse his movies with something that makes them his, even from a distance.

Kidman and McGregor both have lovely voices, and there is real on-screne chemistry between them. Leguizamo is funny and tragic and perfect.

Don't sit in the front row for this movie; it's too big - you'll miss something. And see it on the big screen, preferably in a theatre that has a good sound system.

Summary: Absolute Trash!
Review: Absolute Trash! We walked out 15 minutes into the film. That is something we have never done before and we weren't the only ones! It's like "Rocky Horror Picture Show" on drugs.

Summary: I never thought I would enjoy a musical!
Review: But I did. All I had to do was get through the first 20 minutes of the movie and I ended up really enjoying it. I guess it is kinda like shock therapy. They give you the over-the-top stuff at the beginning to get you to suspend disbelief and into the rest of the movie. At first, my friend and I looked at each other and the only reason I stayed in my seat was the fact that I had heard so many good things about it. So we stayed and I'm glad that I did.

Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor were wonderful to watch, and they did an exceptional job with the songs. Speaking of the songs, I expected the modern songs with the period setting to be distracting, but they were not. They added to the fun of the movie and I enjoyed hearing the familiar songs in such unusual settings. (There is a VERY interesting scene to Madonna's Like a Virgin that I will not soon forget!)

Anyone interested should definitely see this movie in the theater as you may need no distraction to really get you into the story. My friend said that if she were watching this at home she would have turned it off in the first 5 minutes, but she was glad she saw it in the theater as she ended up really enjoying it -- as did I.

Summary: ADD and Moulin Rouge
Review: It's a wonderful film! Too bad I will never be able to see it again. The first 45-60 minutes, as well as the last 15-30 are filled with loud (albeit amazing) music. The images on the screen are displayed not much longer than one second. If you are prone to seizures or headaches, I would wait for the movie on video or DVD so you could go through these scenes. Attention Deficit editing is a perfect description.

What will be easier on your eyes and ears includes Ewan MacGregor's powerful version of "Your Song," and the chemistry between him and Nicole Kidman. Enjoy it, but bring some ear plugs and prepare to cover your eyes.

Summary: Maybe The Worst ?
Review: I've always rated 'Hoffa' as the worst movie I've ever seen but the latest version of Moulin Rouge may give 'Hoffa' a run for that category. Okay, the Sets were okay as were the Costumes but other than that..... ugh.

Summary: Spectacular, Spectacular
Review: It brings a world of fantasy to life. Baz Luhrmann takes well known songs such as Madonna's "Like a Virgin" clashes them together with a musical theme and puts it all together to become, well, actually quite well done. Nicole Kidman who portrays Satine--a showgirl--and Ewan McGregor who portrays Christian--a penniless writer who is trying to make it big--have great chemistry together throughout the movie. At times it may seem to go slow and lag but it picks up speed after Christian and Satine meet. I enjoyed the fantasy like atmosphere of the movie from it's spectacular backdrops to the costumes.
