Summary: 80's metal lives on!!!!
Review: EXCELLENT!!! I went NUTS when I watched this movie. Growing up in the 80's and loving the music, I trully loved this movie. If you liked the music from this time, watch this movie. It's good too see metal having a small comeback. The only problem I have with this DVD??? Not much extras. There is a 5 minute making of, 1 music video from Everclear, and the directors commentary is so-so, he dosent know much about 80's metal when you hear him talk. I wished they had a Steel Dragon concert they filmed for the movie, or commentary with cast members. The sound quality isnt that good either, I had to play with my surround sound to be able to hear everything that was going on. Certain scenes the music was so loud you couldnt hear any of the dialoge. So, not much thought went into the DVD, but the movie itseld is just great.

Summary: See it for the Music
Review: ...I ... happened to be disappointed in it. Just to clarify - No, I'm not a not a big fan of Heavy Metal - that may have helped here.
Mark Wahlberg plays the title character Chris Cole, a 20-something Metalhead in Mid-80s Philadelphia with an identity conflict - By Day, Chris is a copy machine repairman (WOO HOO); By Night, he's the lead singer of a Tribute Band (it's different from a Cover Band somehow). The object of Chris's musical affection? The biggest Heavy Metal act around - Steel Dragon. Did I say affection? I meant obsession. Chris's wall-to-wall collection of Steel Dragon memorbialla reminded me of my first musical obsession - except I had New Kids on the Block posters when I was 11 (not that I'm much better now - but I have learned the joys of limitation). Having thrown that editorial in, I'll continue. Things go wrong for poor Chris when he learns that his friends, and fellow bandmates, don't exactly share his passion and replace him. Don't cry too long for poor Chris though. One day, he's copying Steel Dragon - the next - He's in Steel Dragon armed with the much cooler name Izzy and a really bad British accent (raise your hands if you didn't see that one coming). Of course, this opens up a whole new world for Chris and his girlfriend/manager Emily (Aniston) that they couldn't imagine (Oh My God - drugs and sex every night? You're kidding! And it's all free?! Please, and I thought I was naive) And without giving too much away, the plot gets pretty cheesy ...
Having ripped apart the movie, let me put minds at ease. The music was good - I mean really good. I'm obviously not a metalhead - but when I get a few extra bucks, I'm gonna buy this soundtrack just for the "original Steel Dragon" songs, especially "We All Die Young". But don't buy into my opinions. Go see it if you're into metal and music and want to see firsthand what goes on behind the closed hotel doors of rockers. Because unless you look like Barbie or Pamela Anderson - you'll never see it firsthand.

Summary: disappointed in oregon
Review: When I first saw the previews for this DVD and the cast that included Jennifer Aniston and Mark Wahlberg I couldn't wait to see it but when I did finally get to watch it I cant even tell you what a disappointment it was. For starters it was a very slow paced film, the plot was not planned out very well, but the main thing that really was depressing was the fact that it had two real great actors for such a rotten film

Summary: Just short of magical, best seen as a rock n roll fairy tale
Review: This good-humored film has so much going for it that its a pity it falls short of getting it just right. But there's too much gloss and not enough gritty detail in the script here. Eighties Rock and roll was never quite this air-brushed or prettified, except in fantasy.
Still, this is an immensely watchable film and Wahlberg's musical background is showcased here to good effect. He definitely knows how to play the part of a rock star and seems perfectly at home on stage. Jennifer Anniston is equally believable as his manager/girlfriend, even though her looks never seem to suffer too much from the rigors of the road...somehow the heavy partying and group sex never quite leave her less than picture-perfect, without even a bit of smudged mascara on her checks or a trace of dullness in her blue eyes. She manages to remain mostly upbeat and amazingly chipper.
While this film isn't all that accurate a recreation of 80's rock, it does have its charm as a rock n roll fairy tale, heavy on the fluff and light on the grit. And the music isn't bad, either.

Summary: Great Fun, 'Specially if You Were There!
Review: I simply loved this movie. I know, it's not an Oscar winner, by a longshot. But if you lived through the 80's, and especially if you were a musician (or dated one), this movie is for you.

First a note--this movie is not for younger teens. There is very strong language, fairly explicit sexual situations, and rampant drug and alcohol use.

Now, to the fun. It's fun, it's predictable, it's silly, and it's oh so true to the 80's metal scene. I remember the band practices - "Dude, your're not getting that solo right!!", the firing of band members, the hiring the new guy 'cause he has an amp. These scenes were so true I was laughing myself silly. The driving around, with the entire band in the car, metal played at ear-splitting levels, pounding the side of the car and basically making an arse of yourself...ah yes, the good old days. I don't think I ever went to a concert where there wasn't a fight in the parking lot between rival bands. The flyers, the clothes, the hair--this movie is so true to the 80's metal scene that it was just a blast to relive it. The inclusion of real life band members was wonderful. Blas still looks oh so hot! And Zack Wylde is hilarious; he's such a hick!

It's about an impossible dream coming true for a while. It's about getting the squeal JUST RIGHT. It's about hard, fast music and hard, fast living. And if you were there, and into that scene, it's about reliving the most fun decade of your life. Lots of inside 80's jokes (there's a really funny dig at Ratt that had me in tears) Predictable, but very, very fun.

Summary: Great Rock Moive
Review: I loved it, great acting it sort of caught the feeling of what was happening in the music scene in the late 80's. The songs that Steel Dragon play are good to. (my fav we all die young)
But the one thing that troubled me is the stroy, it seemed a little well stolen. It was sort of like the Judas Priest story

1.Former lead singer was gay he left the band
2.They got a singer from a cover ban.
*
1.Rob Halford left Judas Priest (he was gay)
2. Ripper Owens was in a cover band then joined Priest

I thought that should be pointed out anyway if ur a fan of rock music you will most likely enjoy this film...Buy it worth the money.

Summary: Worth seeing at least once!
Review: The range the Mark Wahlberg has is amazing. The movie was good showing kids/adults that the music rock life is not all fun and games. It shows us that you can like/admire someone else but in the end you still need to be true to yourself. I enjoyed the movie and feel that all music lovers who have ever dreamed of being a star should see this film.

Summary: Big Hair and Spandex
Review: Rock Star is a somewhat interesting look at the glam rock movement of the mid-1980's. Mark Wahlberg (Planet of the Apes, Boogie Nights) plays a fictional character named Chris Cole who is the lead singer of a glam rock tribute band. When the singer from the real band (Steel Dragon) quits, Cole is asked to join up. His ultimate dream of becoming a rock star comes true. Albeit, with a cost.

Even back in the 80's, I always thought the glam rockers looked and acted ridiculous. Riveled only by today's WWF wrestling, the make-up, spandex and big hair was an abomination in silliness. This entire genre would come screeching to a dead halt with the emergence of Nirvana and the Seattle grunge scene in 1990. All of this is faithfully depicted in the movie.

Rock Star also delves into the darkside of rock'n'roll -- the sex and drugs. In one scene, Cole is so drugged out that he can't remember what city he's in. At the same time, female groupies line up in a hotel lobby to have anonymous sex with him. At the conclusion of the movie, Cole realizes that his rock star dream is not what it's cracked up to be. In fact, it's a very lonely place.

The reason I gave Rock Star only three stars is that it had the potential of being a much deeper film. At only two hours it glossed over many aspects of the rock experience which could have been delved into a little bit more. This movie was akin to Boogie Nights in its scope (from rags to riches to rags). I believe a three hour version of this film would have been justified in order to completely capture the character's experience.

Interestingly, the cast in this movie features some real life musicians including a member of Dokken, Slaughter and Jason Bonham (the son of the late John Bonham from Led Zeppelin).

On a side note: I may be wrong here, but does the actor who play's Cole's brother also double as one of the musician's in Steel Dragon? It looked like the same guy. Unfortunately, I couldn't figure it out from the credits.

Summary: Great Rock Film
Review: It is not likely that there will be a trend in making films about 80's hair bands, so it is great that Rock Star tuned out to be a good movie. The movie successfully captures an era that could easily be forgotten. The movie paralles the story of Ripper, who replaced Rob Halford in the metal band Judas Priest. The movie also follows the end of the hair metal era and the introduction of the grunge/ Seattle era. The film is light hearted and has many funny moments. Cameos are provided by Zack Wylde and Jeff Pilson. Musicians and guitar geeks will love the movie. Not as silly as Spinal Tap, but not as serious as Sid and Nancy. Rock on

Summary: Tell Him I Went to Take a Leak
Review: Movie Summary: Chris Cole is a copy machine repairman by day and the leader of the best Steel Dragon tribute band in Pennsylvania by night. He presides over the band with a steel fist making sure they imitate Steel Dragon to the best of their abilities. This wears thin with the other band members and when push comes to shove, Chris is shown the door. Across the country much the same scenario is playing out among the members of the real Steel Dragon. They end up needing a new lead singer. Back in Pennsylvania a phone rings. It's for Chris...

My Opinion: Rock Star dragged. We all knew the call was coming. We knew what the movie was going to be about from the trailer. Yet it took a long time to get there. The story is very predictable and it pulls all its punches. Just when I thought it was going to pull itself up off the mat and land a good blow ending on a high note, they keep it going and any punch it could have had goes flat. Plus in the real world or any movie world, who would dump Jennifer Aniston? Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston do a great job, but the story keeps them from breaking free. Timothy Spall is one bright spot. He is great as the Steel Dragon road manager. He leads us through the rocky terrain of the rock and roll life. In the end I was only slightly entertained. I was left wanting more, but of a better story. So I watched Almost Famous again.

DVD Quality: Video: Widescreen Anamorphic 2.35:1 Sound: DD5.1 Extras: Commentary, Gag Reel, Making Of, Trailer

What You Should Do: Rent this one if you are a big Mark Wahlberg fan. This is a movie that is less than the sum of its pieces. It pulls all its punches.
