Summary: Approach with caution
Review: Surprisingly, this is a topic not covered much by moviemakers before. Shame, then, that Rock Star, is such a dud. Nothing wrong with Mark Wahlberg’s acting or the talented but hopelessly miscast Jennifer Anniston. The problem lies with the cheesy, cynical, unconvincing way the hard rock genre is portrayed. The conflict situations are ridiculously hammy (the rival bands face-off in the car park is particularly cringeworthy). All the way through the movie I got the uncomfortable feeling I was watching a film intended for 7 year-olds. Lovers of rock movies be warned. The only redeeming feature is Timothy Spall as charismatic road manager, the rest of the cast make very unconvincing rock stars and very unconvincing actors. If you haven't seen Almost Famous famous, I would recommend that movie instead..

Summary: not so much about Priest
Review: Several people had been telling me that this film effectively captured the adventures of Judas Priest, namely in the deposing of Rob Halford and his replacement by Ripper, the former JP cover band lead singer.Though Rock Star very loosely references some of the JP saga, it's more a montage of big hair eighties rock in general, sort of arbitrarily pulling in random bits of rock facts, twisting them around a little and telling a "combination story." While recognizable songs move in and out so do alternate moments of cool rock scenes and forays into silliness. Wahlberg and Aniston perform their roles very well and seemed to enjoy them every step of the way. The other band members - as well as roadies - are equally convincing and likable folks. Overall the film is entertaining in its telling of the hair rock era.

Summary: Fun ride
Review: Rock Star tells the story of Chris Cole, an OBSESSED fan of the 1980s band Steel Dragon. As a member of a Steel Dragon "tribute band" (cover band), Chris meticulously conforms his appearance and sound to that of his idol, the lead singer of the band. Because Chris copies Steel Dragon so carefully, rather than finding his own words and style, he is kicked out of his band. However, for the same reasons he is invited to audition to replace his idol in Steel Dragon. Chris, of course, makes the band and now must deal with the new pressures of fame and the rock lifestyle. The movie is a story of Chris' self-exploration and development. He morphs from merely being a Steel Dragon copycat to finding his own voice and assessing his priorities. I thought Rock Star was a fun movie. It was a wild (though predictable) ride.

Summary: a pure fantasy
Review: I can't see what the other reviewers liked about this movie. Its horrible acting and horrible writing. If all good fiction is based on reality, this film is very close to total failure. Wahlberg plays a character Chris Cole who gets a chance to live out the fantasy of being a rock star and all the perks that go with it: tons of money, gorgeous groupies, drugs and legions of devoted fans. After living out the fantasy, he suddenly wakes up and finds the fantasy is not all its imagined to be. This is about the only realistic part of the film. If this film were based more on FACTS than the writers unrestricted imagination, you might have a good film. The facts are it takes years of very hard work to even have a chance to make it in the music business and that's if you're very lucky. To the people in the music business you are nothing less than a piece of meat to make them tons of cash. If you bomb, they vanish like ghosts. As for the groupies, most of them are not gorgeous. They sleep with rock stars for two main reasons: paternity suits and bragging rights. Ask any rock star and if he is honest he will give you the truth about the music business. If this film were based more on reality you would have a far better plot and believable characters. As it stands its nearly a complete washout. Aniston is not convincing and needs acting lessons.

Summary: Best of Genre
Review: I have seen many movies of this genre. Although movies like "Almost Famous" have won more awards, this movie is my favorite. It seems more honest and more realistic. I know this is true in my creative activities and is true in many, many others. If only we have the wisdom to see our limitations, move on and let others grow. Kinda vague, but you really should see the movie to get the feel. The drive, the elation, the disappointment, the distress, the digging in and gutting it out, the acceptance. If you are familiar with the "steps of grieving", you will readily identify them here. The acting is not the very best, but it is good. The overall production is up-to-snuff with today's standards. As they say, I have to use the restroom....

Review: This movie gives you a glimse into the world of sex, drugs and rock and roll. Chris Cole (Wahlberg) is a printing machine mechanic that is the lead singer in a Steel Dragon tribute band. He is so obsessed with making his band exactly the same as the real one. Then one day, Kirk Cuddy, the rythem guitarist of the real Steel Dragon calls him into LA to audition for the spot of lead singer after firing their previous vocalist, Bobby Beers. Chris gets the gig, changes his name to Izzy Cole. Then his first concert, it shows great footage of loud hard rock music. After the concert, the hot chicks, the nude, the sex, and the drugs. This movie explains what sex, drugs and rock and roll is all about.

Summary: Watch It for Wahlberg
Review: Many other reviewers have described the plot of this rags-to-riches parable set in the world of 80s rock and roll. It's best, as many have mentioned, to take the film for what it is, and to enjoy its many positives. Key among these positives is the skill of Mark Wahlberg, who, in this reviewer's eyes, has never let a movie down. Wahlberg plays the hard-rock naif whose ultimate fantasy comes true when he is tapped as lead singer of his favorite band, Steel Dragon. From his initial audition, where he is so frightened and awed that he is unable to sing for several minutes, to his first concert, where he falls down a dramatic staircase on stage, to his wide-eyed first encounter with a hotel room full of willing groupies, he makes us believe. And that talent allows him to rise above the predictable script and to shine. Jennifer Aniston plays his devoted manager/girlfriend, and she, too, gives a good performance within the impossible confines of her character. She is likeable and appealing as she watches her man drawn away from her into the evil world of sex, drugs and rock and roll, unable to get him back and unable to make him see what is happening to him as a man and an artist. The movie plays well, the band is pure 80s, from the sound to the hair to the wretched excess, and the music is fun. There is nothing profound or memorable in the script, but as a viewer, I have to quote Mick Jagger: "It's only rock and roll, but I like it!" Check your mind at the door and enjoy.

Summary: One of the most impacting movies I have ever seen.
Review: The way people are ripping this movie is ridiculous. This movie is GREAT! I don't understand why people go on and on about it being "predictable" etc. etc. To expect something totally unpredictable is not appropriate for this movie. This movie is intended to show an accurate look into the rock and roll lifestyle of the mid 80's. There were many mid 80's rockers that were consulted for this movie, so it does come out to be fairly accurate. You have to take this movie (or any movie for that matter) for what it is and what it intends to portray. So many people on here are going off ripping this movie because it didn't give them what they "wanted" or "expected" or didn't align with their "personal preferences". Such shallow perspectives shouldn't even be considered when evaluating this movie. Definitely WATCH this movie and ENJOY it! The music is great too...

Review: To say that this movie is so "eighties" must be a joke. THis movie is total damage to hard rock music. If you wanna see a great and honest movie about hard rock, check ALMOST FAMOUS. THis movie is a bomb, not surprisingly at all. No wonder JUdas Priest did not want their name included in this project!! It's horrible!
